View Full Version : Should MLS adopt the away goals rule for the playoffs?

I was sent a survey by MLS today, asking questions about the playoff format.

The most interesting questions were:

(1) Am I aware of the away goals rule?

(2) Would I like to see the away goals rule adopted in the playoffs, or do I prefer the current format?

This shows that they are considering a change, and seeing how it will affect their fanbase.

Personally I am in favour of having the away goals rule, and most Americans are now familiar with it through the CCL, if they weren't from Europe.

Should be that way. This total goals thing is idiotic.

There is a movement to get away from the away goals rule in Europe, which I agree with. Although I get both side of the arguement. I think it would be a bad idea to adopt here. I think it gives the team on the road first too much if an advantage.

Yes! The games are always exciting with an away goal in play (like V-Cup games) and it makes it harder to have games going overtime/penalty kicks. It also encourages away teams to score goals instead of just setting back and defend for 90 minutes straight.

I think it should be total points, in last year's playoffs, the two game playoffs series in a couple of series was basicaly over by the time the second game was played, teams had big leads going into the second game. Therefore, if a team wins the first game by a big margin it almost makes the second game a formality making the odds of a team coming back almost impossible. If it was a total points the second game is always going to be meaningful no matter what the score was in that first game.

The talk of dropping the away goal rule is constant every year but usually it's when the unexpected result happens. I'd be surprised if they did drop it since it would be as argued over as instant replay.

I'm for the away goal rule myself but MLS is as MLS does.

I was under the impression the away goals rule was already in place, but then again we never make the playoffs soo :noidea:.

I like away goals, because I don't like extra time, and especially don't like penalties

In terms of affect on competitions, away goals is a bit of a leveller, it seems to me. It's a big part of how both Inter and Chelsea got by Barca in two of the last 3 CLs, imho.

I think the away-goals rule is brutal, arbitrary and unnecessary.
Play it straight up, both ways.
