Sports Business Journal had a big write up on MLSE (can't link due to sub required). Mostly stuff on new board, expectations, etc. Of note was they are backing off the dedicated tv channel thing for right now and also they expect to appoint a CEO when they find the right person (point being that TA was not the right person).

Interesting article about Milos Kosic time at TFC:

http://www.tsn.ca/soccer/mls/story/?id=413508

Holds nothing back.

I agree in some part to this:

Kocic speaks his mind. But his glass is usually half-full rather than half-empty. He wishes Toronto sports fans shared his view.

"It's a weird city. They only see negatives. I don't see these negatives," he said.

While he doesn't sugar-coat TFC's failure in the league, he wonders why supporters don't savour more the club's domestic and CONCACAF cup success.

"I think this city didn't appreciate that Nutrilite Cup (now Amway Canadian Championship) -- winning it three, four years in a row. Champions League semifinal, the biggest result in the club's history, nobody ever said anything about it."

"I can say that I was a part of all the best results this club has -- and all of the worst results this club has," he mused.

What are your thoughts?

^ I'm not sure if it's the same article but there's one like it on the G&M as well.

Gives you a good idea what life is like for some of these guys who are trying to make it in the league and how shit the training is in NCAA in some places.

I'm going to miss Kocic, a character guy

^ Me too. I find it embarassing that we only paid him $44,000.

Salary cap is a business decision, so while I sympathize with Kocic, you can't please everybody playing with salary cap.

But what bugged me most about the article is that TFC FO can't treat its people right. Simple things like getting flowers for Kocic's wife at hospital may be a little thing, but little things do count when you treat people right. People will work harder for you and create a positive working environment when you appreciate them as people, not just a drone to do your bidding. If you can't pay them more, at least do the little things to show appreciation.

I hope someone sends that article to Kevin Payne, because how can you create a winning mentality when you can't fix the root of the problem?

He was a starting goalkeeper in the league. As the article points out, the next lowest salary for a starting keeper was about double his. Salary cap isn't really an excuse - we can massively overpay some people, then a guy like him gets treated like shit. I agree, I hope Payne can sort it out.

Forbes article on the Nelson hiring (not positive): http://www.forbes.com/sites/bobbymcmahon/2013/01/14/kevin-paynes-maverick-appointment-of-nelsen-unnecessary-and-inexplicable/

And what about the players? A wise man once said that the coaches main job is make sure that he has left his players with no excuses for a poor performance. It would seem to me that Payne has just offered the Toronto 2013 squad a bumper crop of reasons why loses are not their fault.

All in all Payne’s decision is one of a maverick – it could work but the chances are very slim. Given the situation Toronto FC was in need of a safe pair of hands but instead the head coach position has been handed to an apprentice.

I hear ya, the league should be embarrassed they pay anybody outside of borderline first year prospects that amount of money. To make it worse most of these contracts aren't even guaranteed year-over-year. They have multiple one year team options, which are a disgrace.

Who are they kidding these days? The clubs can afford it, it's necessary to stabilize teams, and to attract better talent. I'd like to see what the draft class of 2013 would think about their career in MLS after reading a few stories like this... with the prospect of being a decent player in your mid 20s who is part of the backbone of the league, but earns less than 50k a year, gets shafted by his own employer, and has basically has no job security. What a joke.

This is what I suspected.

"Before that game Aron called both of us to come downstairs in the lobby and said 'OK Milos is going to start the first five games of the season and if he doesn't do well, Stef is going to take over.' So that's how my season started, as a starter." Then Frei suffered a season-ending leg injury in practice back home in Toronto.
"Everybody in the media is like 'OK Stef is hurt, that's why Milos is going to be No. 1.' But I'm telling you what happened and you can ask Stef and you can ask Aron Winter. So I earned my job as No. 1."
It's a sore spot for Kocic, who felt even more belittled when Mariner moved down from the front office to take over as head coach after Winter left the club 10 games into the 2012 season.
"When Paul took over he told everybody that 'My No. 1 goalkeeper is injured, that's why we're struggling' but I don't think so. I think I had a very good year and I think I helped the team ... but we have to do it with a whole team.
"I just don't like the way Paul treated me," he added.

Looks like they didn't have Kocic sign the usual "don't talk" form.
