I can't link to it because of the new pay wall, but there was an article in today's Globe sports saying MLSE is going to focus on the teams instead of building condos and restaurants. For reallsies this time.

Could be true. Teachers Pension Plan is about profits above all, so winning didn't matter as much to them if the condos were doing well. TV is about content... and for Bell and Rogers winning teams are better content... making the playoffs means more content.

The only problem is that it's Tom Anselmi who will be entrusted with turning all the teams around.

DURHAM RPB's...!!!

Anyone going to the Irish Times Pub Night tonight...???

Player list isn't very notable, but it would suck if they show and nobody is there...

Anyone going, and want to have a pint...? :drinking:

Toronto sports fans are celebrating their highest profile playoff victory in years, but the precarious state of the city’s professional franchises came into sharp focus Monday as team executives vowed to spend more time wooing fans and less time building condos.

Here's our future folks promoted for incompetency El Preseidente Tom Anselmi spinning more unintentional GOLD.

“But the group which I think is most important are the people who just come because it’s fashionable. And social media can make something fashionable or not. As well as winning.”

Yes YOU STUPID F%$K!!! winning ...glad you put that in as an afterthought. What a feeb.

Anybody who hasn't read their 10 free G&M articles this month, should be able to read the article.

Also, I believe if you search for the article at news.google.ca you should be able to read it from there regardless:

"Toronto sports executives promise fewer condos, more teams that contend."

You can't be serious. Is this an actual quote? He's basically saying the most important segment of MLSE's fan base are the people that don't give a shit. Sure Tom, you focus on crafting witty tweets while other executives are out winning trophies/cups.

edit - oh boy it wasn't Tom that said it. It was Rogers media president Keith Pelley. We remain screwed from top to bottom.

^ It was a guy from Rogers who said that, not Anselmi - Keith Pelley is his name. Actually what Anselmi said in that article was quite reasonable:

“Where we are going next as an organization is to step back a little bit and really focus on the core business – the teams, what they are doing, our relationship with the fans and what we are doing in our community,” he said. “The passive two-way relationship we’re use to with the fans of yesterday is long over, so that creates all kinds of opportunity.”

The not having a passive relationship with fans thing is something that comes straight from TFC.

This is pretty much the same stuff Anselmi said when he was on Prime Time Sports after his promotion.

Its just more PR bs from him. All talk, no action.

I agree. He often says the right things, but never acts on them.

This article is well timed. I didn't know that the Globe + Mail also carried MLSE mouthpieces on its staff. (and now you have to pay to read their PR bs).

With the Raptors playing poorly (and their attendance hurting) and TFC renewals probably not going well and a lack of Maple Leafs revenue, its a good time to get the word out in the media that MLSE hase changed! Yes, now they really care about winning!

I'm not buying it from this group. If they really did care, they never promote Anselmi.

^ Well the great thing is that they are probably starting to see some financial wear-and-tear.

With the exception of the Leafs - which are still stubbornly bulletproof - the other enterprises look to be under-preforming. Do they have any choice but to look at the consistency of the product as a mechanism to improve the financial side of things? I guess development projects can continue to be a distraction, but otherwise they going to continue to tie up a significant amount of capital in their sports franchises and not see any decent returns for it.

Wait for the inevitable spin-off and sale of properties gathered by media conglomerates as they realize cornering content is much harder than they might otherwise assume.

Just a month or so ago Rogers posted a quarterly loss on its share of MLSE. I'm guessing no Leafs and interest payments will cause that.

They have shown very little that they really do care about winning. I realize its still early though.
