TORONTO – Perhaps it is a case of strikers sticking together, but Danny Koevermans feels Toronto FC head coach Paul Mariner is the right man to turn the Reds' fortunes around next season. “I think he’s the good man here to try to do it next season,” said the 34-year-old Dutch striker, whose season ended on July 14 with a torn ACL.

Mariner, a former England striker, took over as head coach from Aron Winter (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/06/07/new-boss-mariner-insists-players-will-define-system-toronto) in early June when the team was 1-9-0. The Reds started out a much-improved 4-2-4 under Mariner, but finished the season on a disappointing fourteen-game winless streak, going 0-10-4.

1. But Koevermans feels the team improved when Mariner took over and employed a 4-4-2 formation instead of the 4-3-3 used by Winter.

2. “For me personally there was progress here because we did better by the formation we had,” Koevermans said Tuesday at the club’s end-of-the season media conference. “When you look at the last [14] games without a win you would say 'No,' but I think when Paul came in we improved and you can say because of too many injuries we couldn’t hold onto it. So I truly believe that we were better when Paul took over.”

Mariner has identified Koevermans’ injury that required season-ending surgery (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/07/16/tfcs-koevermans-out-rest-season-torn-acl) as the beginning of Toronto’s skid. They won only once more in the league following the injury, a 2-1 result over Colorado on July 18. Koevermans had six goals in nine league games under Mariner and nine goals in 16 league games overall.

3.“I’m pretty confident [Mariner’s the right coach],” Koevermans said. “He gave me the confidence I needed. He’s just a genuine guy. I like him. He’s a good coach. What you see is what you get. With his appearance on the [side]line, how he works with us, he’s basically almost in the field and he wants to kick the ball in himself."

As far as his own situation, Koevermans would not be pinned down on a possible return date next season.

4. “I’m just doing what I have to do and until now I think I’m according to schedule so I can do whatever I have to do and the knee is actually looking like a knee again,” he said. “The swelling has gone out. I feel good. If I’m going to say it’s going to be April or May you’re going to hang me onto that so no dates.

5. “I’m just training every day – also in the offseason now, so no holiday for me. Even when I go back to Holland I will be training every single day except for the weekends to come back as soon as possible. Hopefully it can be March or April but I’m not going to give a date.”

1. The team improved when they changed formations, not when they changed the head coach. You would think that the easy decision would be to change the formation rather than creating a giant fucking mess by dumping on a head coach.

2. He was paired up with Johnson up top of the formation which benefited him. I'll also point out that he was out of shaped for the start of the season and he was part of the reason the team went 1-9.

3. Self explanitory, whether you wanna write a fluff piece or an anti-Mariner piece. You just have to note that Mariner is a joke on the sidelines and his demeanor is comical. You would have thought that the movie, "Kicking and Screaming" was based on the Paul Mariner coaching style.

4. So why would he say that Winter's team was "the worst team in the world" and then call Mariner "a good coach"? Basically because TFC is paying for his services whether its on the field or off the field and they are also paying for his medical bills. He could be offloaded in November or December and he has given a time line of April or May for full recouperation. Its a no brainer.

5. Even in the offseason now. Wow why didnt he try that prior to the 2012 season? What a fucking asshole.

I think that some of what Koef said got lost in translation or can be attributed to the fact his first language is not English.

I don't interpret the "even in the offseason now" to mean that he is now training in the offseason and did not in years prior... Rather I take it to mean that he is training now - which is during the offseason.

As far as not providing a time line, it is understandable - ACL surgery takes a long time to recover from and has many ups and downs. My wife has had three of the surgeries and each time the recovery has been different.

What I take from the Koevs interview is that he sticks by the new management. Although we all cited the Dutch connection between Winter and Koevs to be a possible help it proved to be a relationship that needed to be more man-managed with an arm over the shoulder. I don't begrudge Koevs for trying to be positive going forward. That's a players job. It doesn't do anything to change my opinion of the present coach's skills.

Today is the final day to vote for 2012 RPB Man of the Year. Voting closes at 2:30. I'll post results later tonight.

I'd like to thank those who participated in the two rounds of voting - we had a pretty good turnout of voters for each round!

And one individual from the voter's who participated will win a TFC Academy journal in red, the ones that were being handed out at the academy tours a couple of weeks ago.

And if you have not seen it, the Canadian Women's team has a gift for sale for those interested. It is a pillowcase made up specifically for the team, and they can be ordered for $30 each. Link here: http://janeroosgallery.com/promo/Jane_Roos_Gallery/pillowcase.html
