This is worth highlighting.

The club’s five wins this season are one fewer than the total in the expansion year of 2007, when they won six of 30 matches, and 2011, when they did the same in 34 games.

The 23 points is also the Reds’ worst total in their six years of existence.

We also finished the season with 2 more points in 2007 (when we played 4 less games). So that's a wrap, we did worse than we did with a team assembled and coached by MoJo that was handicapped with stricter Canadian content rules. I don't use the facepalm lightly - but it's warranted here....

I'd like to add that we're closing this season out with the least amount of optimism for the next season out of any of the six.

I wish. They'll be around to wreck havoc for the first half of next year, unfortunately.

Kelly's at it again http://www.thestar.com/sports/soccer/article/1278605--tfc-is-the-only-toronto-sports-team-set-to-break-its-losing-record

Almost Larssonesque in its slurpiness towards Mariner, look at the last line...

"Since I believe Paul Mariner and Toronto FC are willing to build a controlled fire and burn this wretched side down to charcoal briquettes, I also believe they can be a contender in 2013."

- Revolving door of goalkeepers.
- Overpaid strikers.

Even the facepalm isn't enough to properly reflect this...

Thank goodness this hellish nightmare of a season is over. Sadly, I see no reason to think 2013 will be much better. The Galaxy CCL match at Rogers Centre seems like it was in another century, let alone last March.

So a day after Kelly tried to make excuses for TFC's FO, he comes out with an endorsement of Mariner.

Looks like he's joined the dark side with Rollins and Larson.

The next month will be very important for Mariner. He needs to get rid of players and starting bringing "his own" guys in.
If he waits until January to do anything, then you will know exactly what type of season we will have.

^So far, "his own guys" haven't exactly inspired me with much confidence. I fear next season will be just as dreary as this one.

We have the least creative front office in the league when it comes to player selection. I'm expecting more of the same unless management is changed.

Season is over. Tomorrow is pub night. First and downtown location at Williams Landing. I would have no idea what to talk to Hassli, Avila and Amerikwa about.

Certainly not the past season or next season.

Countdown to ticket renewal deadline day vs Mariner as coach. GO!

;1539736']- 4 Designated Players.
- Revolving door of goalkeepers.
- Overpaid strikers.

The issue is the revolving door period & lack of quality. Cap mismanagement is a big part of this - tying up a significant amount of cap space into 3 injury prone DP's, throw in some big contracts for Ecks and O'Dea - it doesn't leave a lot of room left to bring in quality and depth.

This team needs a solid core of no-frills, dependable MLS caliber players, and a few game changers thrown in to take us up a notch. This group needs to be given time to play together and actually develop as a team instead of 11 individuals.

I don't see the goalkeeper situation is being critical at this time. Yes, it's a bad move, and playing Hall has cost us points, but the problems are way deep than who is between the sticks.

I'm honestly at a loss how anyone could improve this team very much over the off season. We have too much cap space tied up in 3 DP's and select other players. Hopefully Hassli is released and we are down to two. Ideally, Frings retires and we are down to one. We have other heavy contracts with O'Dea and Ecks that are also hurting.

That's problem one.

Problem two is that we need to make moves within the MLS to improve our team. What value do we have to trade in the off-season to improve our team? For players - Silva for sure has trade value - probably quite high. We would be crazy to trade him away, and that means we will probably ship him out for a supplemental draft pick. Johnson and Avila probably have some value. Frei might, but being out for a season injured will hurt this - and I think we'd be crazy to trade him without keeping Kocic as number one. But Hall will probably be #1 next year and Frei will probably be shipped out.

That leaves us draft pick. I expect us to trade away our future and deal away draft picks to pick up MLS vet's in a desperate attempt for a short term push to the playoffs in order to avoid another potential STH exodus at the end of the season.

That leaves out of contract players in January period. While I suspect that there are certainly some diamonds in the rough to be picked up here - I always wonder about what sort of quality is available then. Players out of contract when the bulk of the leagues are actually playing are going to be out of contract for a reason.

There are also perception issues to overcome. A lot of players are not going to want to come here. Some of that may be due to the bad reputation the FO has, but really, what player wants to go and play for a perenial bottom feeder that has liitle outlook for improvement?

Unfortunately, Mariner is taking a scouting trip looking in Europe, continuing Mo's failed policy of hiring overpriced Europeans instead of drafting intelligently from young North Americans, supplemented with South American talent and the better academy players, like the good MLS sides do. Of course he'll round out the overpriced Europeans with some crap players from Bermuda.

Keep O'dea, Silva, Johnson, Dunfield, Kove, and the goalkeepers...everybody else see ya!!!
And send the scouts to South America!

So you're telling me that a media person mysteriously changed sides to support a team that is owned by the largest Media consortium in Canada (and maybe North America?). Come on! Pull my other leg, that one is long enough.

He who bitches at the largest hand to feed will be the most hungry. Mark my words.

so our list of places where PM scouts is now:
Euro cup
Canadian international friendlies
Bermuda
players he got on loan at Plymouth
And now, teams that we beat 3-1 in preseason.
Great job Mariner, keep up the good work. no wonder Winter didn't rate your scouting reports, especially after Caicedo,Iro,Aceval,Robinson, etc were all busts

I can't wait until I can respectfully buy season tickets again.

It's looking like that will be a few years away yet.... heads need to start rolling ASAP

Well Kelly got one thing right in that piece of shit of an article:

Paul Mariner
will destroy this team. He will reach into its guts and begin pulling wires randomly
(http://www.thestar.com/image/1268607--paul-mariner)

Now his editor should have put this sentence into the past tense and it would have been the most bang on, concise piece of TFC analysis I've read all season. LOL
