RSL will be playing Herediano 10PM at RIo Tinto Tuesday October 23:

RSL must advance to receive a salary-budget bonus from Major League Soccer. Without it, RSL might be forced to disband its core group of players and start rebuilding.

The league provides the bonus to support teams advancing in Champions League since many need the financial help to retain the players who helped them qualify for the knockout rounds.

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/55125414-77/rsl-league-herediano-champions.html.csp

A win is needed to send them to the quarter-finals.

Houston also play Olimpia at 8PM, and need a win or a tie. Houston will be playing their reserves to focus on MLS.

CCL Standings:

http://www.mlssoccer.com/ccl/standings2012

In one sense, I'd love to see Kreis' team play again in the CCL, they have been great to watch and give the competition the attention it deserves. OTOH, it's tough to see a team other than TFC get a cap advantage.

There is often some good football to watch in the CCL, though the Houston game probably won't display much.

As much as I would want TFC to succeed in the CCL, I was cheering for RSL last last year, and therefore I would be happy with any MLS achievements in the CCL tournament. For now.

I was going to say, after watching the last half hour of that game, hard to believe Houston plays in the same league as TFC. I've seen them playing in MLS vs. other teams, and Houston often looks quite a bit different from today. So also tactically aware & flexible, adapting their style of play to suit the opponent and the occasion.

also shows Kinnear as flexible tactician, and Kinnear used to be a 'hoofball' guy

so the question is, is it just the quality of players that kept MLS coaches from playing more possession based game? interesting hypothesis to explore...

Watching fringe playoff teams like Houston, Dallas and Vancouver really drives home how much ground TFC has to make up just to be in the conversation, never mind competitive.

Look how high up the RSL defenders are playing, running forward passed the halfway line to win loose balls back. But if i recall correctly, the reason we lost so much under Winter was because MLS defenders aren't good enough to play a high line

that back 4 has been playing together since 2008, plus beckerman and rimando around same time. Except Schuler who is with RSL since 2010. the chemistry between those guys is what allows RSL to pull off a high line. heck, they probably know and understand each other better than their wives

Herediano’s insistence on sitting back on its heels — and a penchant for flopping in the second half — left Salt Lake players and coaches frustrated.

“Yeah, it’s standard when you play these teams,” RSL midfielder Will Johnson said. “Diving. Time wasting. You know exactly what you’re going to get. They think that’s a good way to play.”

The biggest problem for RSL coach Jason Kreis is that the officials did not take control of the game and add enough time to curtail the theatrics.
“For me, it’s ugly,” Kreis said. “It’s not what this sport is about. The referees need to be smart enough to say, ‘We’re going to add on time.’”

It's going to be very tight on return leg

We all know what Santos Laguna can do, and they are more than capable of unleashing goals at Torreon. But Houston looked really good going forward. Some of their movement and one touch passing were some of best I've seen in MLS. Defensive a little shaky, but I can see Houston nicking an away goal to make things interesting.

As for Seattle, I think Tigres will score a goal, but Seattle at home... we'll see. Should be interesting

Did I read that right?

Viniegra of Tigres gets a yellow card in the 37th minute for kicking the ball away, and 8 minutes later does the same thing, gets another yellow card and Tigres are down to 10 men? What an idiot.

Then, Seattle score 3 goals and Tigres go out.

Where was the referee from? He obviously wasn't putting up with any crap from the Mexicans as he gave their goalie a yellow card for time-wasting in the 35th minute.

Seattle @ Santos Laguna, April 9, 8PM. Seattle has to win 1-0, or tie 2-2 or higher.

It's likely both MLS sides will be eliminated by April 10, leading to an all-Mexican final.

For much of that game vs Monterrey, LA looked much better than when they played us, and not just because Keane was back. Taking Villareal out for Donovan really disrupted their flow and it was downhill from there. He's got another couple weeks before match fitness IMO. If I was an LA fan, I'd be alarmed by how bad things felt apart at the end.

CCL: Seattle Sounders arrive in Torreon, believe a comeback vs. Santos Laguna is possible
TORREÓN, Mexico – The Seattle Sounders face a daunting task, but it's one they are confident they can overcome.
That was the general message from the club as they touched down in Mexico on Sunday night ahead of the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal series against Santos Laguna on Tuesday (8 pm ET, Fox Soccer, live chat on MLSsoccer.com).
Down 1-0 in the series after losing at home last week (http://www.mlssoccer.com/ccl/news/article/2013/04/03/ccl-match-recap-seattle-sounders-0-santos-laguna-1), Seattle will need to grab a result under hostile conditions if they are to move on to the tournament finals, but they have the belief that they can do just that.
“A comeback is doable because it’s only one goal,” Mauro Rosales (http://www.mlssoccer.com/players/mauro-rosales) told reporters at Torreón Airport. “The last game, we were in a worse situation and we were able to get past Tigres so we anticipate that we can do the right things to get a result.”
