Juninho's second goal was ridiculous for too many reasons. I'm sure in his mind he's like..."Where are defence people?".... "OK I zhoot ball" "Yaaay I score goal" "I hug manager now" ..."OK Robbie you score two now, its eazhy"

Typical game last night, but I think there was a chink in the Mariner armor when he gave the halftime interview. He looked out of excuses and shaken by the vast difference between the two teams.

Reality checks suck....especially when you think you're close.

All I have to say is that Winter's team didn't embarrass the club as much as Mariner's team has against LA.

These were the line ups for the CCL matches earlier this year:
http://concacaf.globalsportsmedia.com/page.php?sport=soccer&language_id=us&page=tournament&view=match&match_id=1223742

http://concacaf.globalsportsmedia.com/page.php?sport=soccer&language_id=us&page=tournament&view=match&match_id=1223748

To be fair, Mariner didn't have the fire power up front that Winter had for his game. Namely Koevermans. But of Plata, Koevs, Johnson, and Soolsma, Mariner decided to throw away two of these players and replaced them with what exaclty? Weideman? Amerikwa? Also Beckham didn't play against us this time around.

Winter also didn't have O'Dea for his defense, and had to use Aceval and Harden but seemed to have gotten a way better defensive game out of the team then Mariner managed. And Mariner used a defensive formation for fucks sake. http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2012-09-22-la-v-tor/rosters

The other thing is that Plata, Soolsma and DeGuzman seem to be better options then what Mariner has chosen for the team and it was his direct choice to cast away these players. He could have gotten rid of them at the end of the year if he thought they weren't good enough. But he replaced them with players of his choosing who are worse players. How does that equal success now exactly? Hall seems like a worse goalie then Kocic by far. How doesn't Mariner see this?

I hope I am wrong, but next year seems to be a write off, and the year after as well, as the next guy will need a year to clean it up.

Next years saving grace will be a return of all of Koevs, Frings, Hassli, Johnson, Avila, Silva, and possibly Dunfield. The end of the hoof ball experiment, and two decent midfielders added to the squad and the solidification of Morgan, Henry, O'dea, and Eckersley at the back.

Hoofball only works if you keep a clean sheet, or at the worst, let only 1 goal in. This hasn't been happening under Mariner, it's time to show him the door and go back to the vision for the club that Winter implemented.

^^Also,to be fair, the Galaxy were playing poorly at the start of the season when we dumped them from the CCL, and they've hit form since then. This was a much better team than when we played them in the spring.

We also didn't have Frei last night. I think everyone and their uncle saw the way Hall was lining up that free kick and knew it was going in.

At the end of the day - I still agree with you. Mariner has no idea how to use the players he has at his disposal. The proof is in the game we are playing. They can't even string two pass together for crying out loud.

I noticed that for 2 straight games now during his in game interview.

Reminded me a lot of the way Ron Wilson appeared right before he was axed.

Maybe Mariner knows his end is near.

We can only hope...

In the end, the short-sighted bottom-line approach might work in our favor. MLSE needs a story to sell people on renewals, is there one with the current management team people are willing to listen to? I really don't think there is any appeal.

To me, the only card they have left to play is to go out and overpay for an existing MLS management team. Then they can say: "look this guy made the playoffs for x, you give him time for us, he will do the same thing here". Sort of that, they've tried everything else... why would anyone take their message at face value?

They did try it with Preki, but that had it's own issues. But this is what what they should do. But they should do it with someone that has experience winning in the league. I still say back a dump truck of money up to Schmidt or Arena.

Time for experienced first team management at the reins, that know the North American game. No more experimentation.

Those two would be great, but I think both those teams are serious enough where it would be incredibly difficult to pull their managers away. They're playing in a different league from TFC when it comes to available resources, which is a shame because we should be right there with them. Teams I think we might be able to crack:

Chicago / Klopas : it's happened before to them, sure we could do it again
Columbus / Warczycha : low budget / small market
RSL / Kreis or Legerway: would be tough, but the owner isn't a soccer guy and probably doesn't know what he has there. If we really put the money on the table, I think something could get done.

I'd only hope whoever comes in would make a point of bringing their own staff. Nobody is going to get anything good out of earl cochrane and jim brennan.

I would go after Bob Bradley. But he has way bigger aspirations than MLS.

Other than that, I don't see any good solutions that are unemployed. And all the good MLS guys will be coaching their teams in the playoffs, which wouldn't help TFC' market the new guy.

I'm not sure what exactly you're saying, but I've seen Frei let in some free kicks due to horrible positioning and not placing the wall properly. One that stood out was Chicago in the rain @BMO last year to tie it 2-2 near the end. I could see from the south end that the player had a direct shot at the net because the wall was in the wrong spot and Frei was behind the wall. Of course everyone gave credit to the scorer for an amazing FK but it was stoppable

What about trying to get Peter Wilt? He sounds like a decent option.

The guy believes in transperancy and honesty, he wouldn't last a day with MLSE.
