TFC eye Trillium Cup revenge

Crew, Toronto FC among hottest MLS teams as they tangle!

It's good to see optimism on this board, but I fear we'll be up against the toughest opponent as of yet. Columbus has 5 straight wins and will be full of confidence. I fear a loss, but figure a draw is realistic if we play well. If we're lucky we can come out with a win, but it is going to be hard.

My guess is 2-2.

What, 'cos Ricketts is due? He has two goals in six years of professional football; I think he's one of the best wingers in MLS but expecting him to chip in goals is probably wishful thinking.

I said 1-0 on the other board, I'll stick with that and say maybe it comes off a set piece, as rain is never good for 4-5-1's.

I also think the Crew are overrated (and think Chicago is a much better team), and playing above their heads, and due for a bad outing. That said I don't know if our guys have ironed out all their goal-scoring bugs from run of play.

I say 2 - nil Edu in the 44th and Guevara in the 65th.

4-1 TFC. Hoping for a goal explosion against Crew. We had one last year against FC Dallas so we should be able to do it now with even better players and an overrated (and hopefully overconfident) Crew squad.

And if Robert actually tries a shot on goal (not a free kick) it might go in.

the Crew have definitely been lucky. I remember that goal vs Chivas that Brad Guzan that went right through his hands. then there was the Houston non-goal that was on the line and probably went across that was not counted.

they also haven't quite as well away.. and now they get to play in a tougher environment. so 3-1 TFC.

I think it will be a completely differetn game than what we saw to open the season in Columbus. This is a new team now and has got an ungrade that so far has been successful with the signings of Robert, Guevara and Rickets. It will be great to see the Reds knockoff the Crew. It will be nice to be back at BMO Field after a 17 day layoff.

05-16-2008, 09:03 AM
it wasn't like columbus totally destroyed TFC in the opener either.
I remember that game distinctly, and I was thinking "wow, this TFC team looks a helluva lot more organized than last year". the first goal was a total fluke by a guy who is injured now and against a keeper who won't be playing.. then Sammy completely flubs a penalty kick. and they had other chances to score. the run of the play was not dominated by Columbus.... even though it was a road game for TFC.

Guevara and Robert should cause a lot of trouble for Columbus. And they haven't seen the shifty moves of Ricketts yet.

I like these next two games, because they are against teams that we already saw this season and can now test again with the improved squad.

TFC can't let Columbus lull them to sleep (cuz thats what they do to other teams). We have to take it to them right from the opening whistle. Maybe a more mobile Cunningham would be a better pick over Dichio in this game. Brennen has to keep Eddie Gaven in check... This game is ours for the taking...

They changed the time to 4 pm because CBC has the hockey game before, I see a good TFC victory later this afternoon, it will be a good one, they just have to go out there and take it to the Crew big time.It is the start of a 14 day five game stretch so it is important to start it on a high note.

Very good game by Robert. Ricketts needs to step it up a bit and start finding people off his crosses.

We need to finish!! This is starting to be a concern that we're not scoring off the run of play. Dichio is always "close" on the balls into the box but he's never quite there.

Playing the ball on the ground is what's got us to the final third, we'd be much better off trying to finish that way.

I was thoroughly impressed with TFC's peformance today coming off of an extended break in the schedule. The Reds dominated the match and deserved a better outcome. The fact that we can all come away disappointed with a draw (and a clean sheet) against the top team in the standings illustrates just how far TFC has come in such a short time. Bring on D.C.!!!

10 things I think I think...
1) Tyrone Marshall was man of the match (Robert a close 2nd)
2) I may now hate another MLS player more than landycakes...
3) If we had a DP striker, we'd be supporters shield contenders
4) Streamers are officially annoying. Some players kick right through them...but when the guy taking the corner waits til all the streamers are cleared off the pitch before he kicks, its irritating as hell. Especially when we have the run of play because you just want him to get on with it.
5) Did I mention Schelotto is a wanker?
6) Jason De Vos is quality in the booth. Him and Nigel are the best MLS commentators that i've ever heard (except for that spanish guy who you hear in the game highlights).
7) De vos says 'on the ascendancy' too much...the fact that thats the only thing i can say negative about him is a good thing.
8) If we don't pick up 3 points vs DC on wed, it will be a disappointing home stand
9) Colombus did well in not giving guevara much time on the ball.
10) We did enough to win...just lacked the final touch.

This was one of the most physical games we've put on the field. My man of the match - Paul Winsper. The improvements in stamina and ability to keep the ball on the part of our guys is nothing less than amazing. Most of our team was playing the full length of the field-this killed us when we tried to do this last season. I was somewhat concerned by the decision to bring everybody forward or back to follow the play but I trust that Carver analyzed what would work best against the Crew.

Well... this was definitely a frustrating game to watch. Yet again we lacked the ability to finish. Our strikers were again, non existent, with absolutely no production coming from Dichio and Cunny in this game in my opinion. Our buildup, to me, is fantastic. However we seem to run into a brick wall near the box, and our chances are continually wasted. We really need someone who can finish up front, because Dichio isn't going to do it, and neither is Cunningham

I think we probably shaded this one, were the better side and a little more quality in our strikes probably should have bagged the points. Still, last season we would have found a way to lose a match like this. Another clean sheet and unbeaten in 5.

Columbus are pretenders, they will not be in the postion there are now as the season progresses I feel. And for Shitletto, should have been sent off in the first half for descent, on multiple occasions.

Concerning Dichio...

Jack was talking to me during the match and mentioned that Dichio is much more effective as a sub coming in for the second half (or something along those lines). Thinking about it now, I respectfully disagree. I think Dichio is a better starter and while he may not have the same turn of speed as most of the midfield does, his physical presence in itself has a distinct intimidation factor. Looking back at it now, I recall several instances in the first half where the Columbus players were really keeping their distance when they saw him moving aggressively. No doubt he's a big guy and that in itself slows him down, but size can be an important advantage as well.

Carver switched them to have their good feet on the inside, because Columbus was dropping its fullbacks right back and packing the defense with 10 men, which meant service through the air on crosses was going to be that much harder to capitalize on. So instead, he tried having Ricketts and Robert cut inside, which is why you also saw Brennan and Wynne cutting inside on the overlaps.

Didn't work, but it sure as heck almost did. That Robert shot was one inch the other way from winning the match.

The game yesterday proved that Cunny cannot start. The team had great cohesion with Dichio, it lost it when cunny came on. It is not that Cunny was bad, it is just Dichio is much better suited for the lone stiker role. I do like Cunny comming on with 20-30 minutes so that he has time to make something happen. For those who are not convincied I encourage you to go back and see the game again, if you have it taped. I really do think we had a great game. Yes we should could have won, and were close to doing so. But lets not forget, as much as I hate them the Crew are not the same team from last year, much like us they have vastly improved. I will say this we were the better team, and we created a lot of confusion in their end, we should have capitalized, but I do not think that it was any ones players fault. Edu could have struck it better, Ricketts had to take the shot leftfooted, not his strong foot, Guevarra took a couple of shot from out that sailed, and Robert was simply unlucky. Sometimes this just happens. I am very happy with a clean sheet, and I have to say Marshall played a better game then I have seen any MLS CenterBack play. I loved the organization, and I love our system style.

I made it back safe and no problems getting across the border (Shocking).
A number of things I took away from this game was TFC played a very physical game something they wouldn't even think of doing last year. To me this says they are healthy and willing to put their body on the line. Second, we were not the same team that played the Crew at the beginning of the season. We tied the best team in the league that we lost to 2-0 at their place (actually it was our place). We gained a point from a previous game where we gained nothing. The one play that will stick in my mind is when Sutton got 5 holed and Marshall was at the goal line to clear a sure goal. Right there was the indication that our defense, if not a bit stronger, a bit more smarter than the 1st game. It's not to say that we couldn't improve but the signs are there that this team IS improving.

I'll take the point, when compared to last season at least we're getting points out of games when we don't score.

Agree with this as well, over the last few matches I cannot count the times he has kept wide to the touchline on the left flank and never received any balls out to him. I think he is trying to get himself into the match due to lack of service by drifting in.

We need him wide and he needs some service, he is dangerous out there.
