Toronto FC shuffles the deck

It says 18 month contract.

Here is the article ...

Regardless of where their team winds up in the MLS standings, Toronto FC's duo of John Carver and Mo Johnston has set the pace regarding recent transactions. Filing discovery claims on strikers Paul Dickov and Darren Huckerby before anyone else yielded a contract with Dickov and a trade with San Jose for the rights to Huckerby, for which TFC received allocation money and an international player slot.

According to a source, Dickov has signed an 18-month deal that will pay him approximately $500,000, which means he'll earn the maximum salary or close to it next year, and about half of that for the remainder of this season. His acquisition is expected to be announced Tuesday, or as soon as there is a roster slot available. TFC waived Andrea Lombardo last week but still needs to trim a player to make room for Dickov.

Toronto also still holds the rights via allocation to Brian McBride and has yet to conclude a deal by which it will trade him to Chicago, which is where he wants to play. He will be eligible to play Tuesday, when the U.S. secondary transfer window opens, and no one would be surprised if, sooner or later, MLS instructs TFC to either put McBride on its 18-man roster, trade him, or lose its allocation claim to him. This is a single-entity league, remember.

In the allocation process, teams are ranked in reverse order of results in the past 30 games - when the allocation claim is filed -- and have the option of claiming an available player, or passing. Toronto moved into the top spot when San Jose, at the top of the list as an expansion team, recklessly chased former Rapids striker Peguero Jean Philippe, who arrived from Scandanavia with bad knees, suffered internal knee derangement, and is on season-ending IR.

Though he's 35, Dickov is a pesky, relentless forward who adds yet another dimension to a TFC attack that already features speed (Jeff Cunningham) and strength (Danny Dichio) up front, and myriad midfield talents in wingers Rohan Ricketts and Laurent Robert, playmaker Amado Guevara, and central linkmen Maurice Edu and Carl Robinson.

"but still needs to trim a player to make room for Dickov." Cunny's gone! I have a feeling he will be released rather than traded, unless MO pulled some crazy stunt by combining McBride rights and Cunningham for a player. hmmmm... (just speculating)

The Huckerby deal with San Jose added another international spot, so Smith won't need to be dropped down ... and it's likely that Cunningham will be dealt or waived in order to create a spot for Sukur if that deal gets done.

Shaughno

International spot, but not roster spot. We still only have 18 senior roster spots.

Edit: Oss, you're right.

Only prob is that international spots dont necessarily add room to a full 18 man roster (unless im over looking something...)

Nuvinho
07-15-2008, 08:28 AM
If Dickov signs, Smith will be moved to the developmental roster

If someone else signs (Sukur) or we get a player in a trade (for McBride), then Cunny is gone bye bye!!

Whoops, looks like this first part got covered twice over. Heh. For the umpteenth time, the issue is NOT international spots, the issue is that we need to clear up room on the Senior roster. We have 18 senior roster spots, which are all full. There is not way to increase this cap on senior roster spots, you can just trade for an international designation (which allows more people on your roster to be international, doesn't allow more people on the roster).

I think we'll see Cunningham get waived (no one would want his salary in a trade for anything remotely useful, although getting anything at all would be a fleecing), and Smith moved down to SD again. If Smith doesn't get moved then who knows what will happen. It will be an interesting few days.

I did not know that there was such a thing.

There are definitely two dressing rooms, but I believe Smith was moved up a dressing room while he was still a dev contract, so I don't think contract has anything to do with it.

Mabe Mo should try and get Conde and a pick for McBride. It looks like we have some offensive options now. We could use a little more competition for defensive spots.

I did not know that there was such a thing.

I couldn't find the link, but at the beginning of the season Morgan Campbell wrote in his blog about how Carver had split up the players dressing room so that developmental players had their own room, from which they could be "promoted" to the senior room.

Jarrod Smith was the first player to make that jump after getting some decent playing time.

In the item, Jim Brennan was cited as saying such a division of quarters was common in England.

^^ International spot, we still have to free the actual ROSTER spot. Currently, we have 18 men on an 18 max roster. To bring two people in, two people have to go.

so if Dickov is getting 500K over 18 months, then he's signed to a 330K per season contract (like Robert and Robbo), with 165K for this half season, and 330K next season.
If they unload Cunny, that's 120K or so off the cap and they would just need 45K additional this season to cover Dickov.

True, but we can always start somewhere. Which is why I created the thread about the roster stuff. I don't think it's fair to expect one person to keep track of everything that would be required in an FAQ. People should start up threads with information, then they should be linked to from the FAQ.

We need people who AREN'T already overworked to step up and provide info.

an article said that Dickov rejected Toronto and is looking at Leicester again

http://www.lep.co.uk/national-football/Dickov-linked-with-Leicester-return.4287584.jp

Dickov linked with Leicester return

Former Manchester City striker Paul Dickov is being linked with a return to Leciester City, despite an offer from Blackpool.
The 35-year-old had been expected to accept Simon Grayson's offer of a new deal at Bloomfield Road after choosing not to join MLS side Toronto FC.

He joined Blackpool on-loan in January and his six goals proved vital in the club's fight against relegation in the Coca Cola Championship.

However, the Daily Star claims that new Leciester boss Nigel Pearson has given him the chance to move to the Walker's Stadium.

He is expected to make his decision within the next couple of days.

I am not so sure about Dunny, he is a great utility kinda sub and can play M or D. He may be a little expensive in that role by MLS standards granted. Also, he has gotten into 9 games this year and has a broken ankle (and according to the CBA you cannot release a guy who is hurt).

Also... there is no guarantee that Cunny is guaranteed. Remember that every team can have 2 players whose non-guaranteed date span beyond the July 1 deadline.

All this drama is starting to remind me of the beginning of the season when the rumours were flying like shithawks at the dump. I'll just wait for the club to announce a signing before I get my hopes up. I have faith that Mo will get the job done though.

What if TFC thought it was a done deal and so that's where everyone got the Cunningham's gone rumour, then Dickov's agent calls and says "No, we're going with Leicester" and so they start Cunny last night, cause he's going nowhere for the time being.

Anyone? no?ok.

Why do the two teams I support have to be so damn frustrating in the transfer market!!

yet another Dickov rumour ... this time Blackpool ...

http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=780059

"The Blackpool Gazzette is citing "sources close to the player" as revealing that the 35-year-old has chosen the Seasiders ahead of former club Leicester and MLS side Toronto FC.

Dickov had joined Blackpool on loan from Manchester City last January and scored half a dozen goals during the six-month spell which proved vital in the club's fight against relegation in the Coca Cola Championship.

According to the reports, Dickov was swayed by the offer of a player/coaching role, meaning that he would already be well on his path towards a career in managment, while having the added perk of extending his playing das.

Dickov is officially out of contract after having been deemed surplus to demands at Manchester City at the start of the summer."

Paul Dickov has not agreed a deal to join Championship side Blackpool, according to his representatives.
Dickov has also been in negotiations with former club Leicester and Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, and his agents First Artist Sport insist that no deal has been signed with any club yet.

None of this shit is reliable (long story, media person for 20 years). The fox report was pointedly off of the Goal.com story, the report suggesting he's changed his midn reads as if it were designed to mitigate the fact that SI and Soccer America were just wrong.

The only two people who regularly (and even then, not really) break hot TFC news are the Score (for all my ragging on their imaginary Kluivert "source") and Ives Galarcep on Soccer By Ives, due to his contacts with Mo from New York.

Let's put it this way, if it's always unnamed sources, then 90% of it is bullshit. People don't go on the record for two reasons:1) They might get fired, or are in personal or reputational danger . 2) Their information is not reliable or is valueless.

That's why, most of the time, small stories do not come out via leaks. There has to be a reason to leak the information in the first place and it has to be good enough for the reporter to call it a scoop and look for some glory.

Unless it's going to further their quest for a particular player, where would the value in releasing any info here lie?

So I can tell you as a reporter and editor of some 20 years in newspapers, these stories are all complete speculative horseshit.

One hint on when it won't be bullshit? If someone writes a "sources" story but includes the line "will be unveiled on Tuesday" or something specific about when the announcement will be. That indicates that THEIR sources knows what they're talking about.

And as far as agents leaking things to suggest their players "might" be going somewhere? They're much more likely to pull a Musampa and get offers on the table that they can then take to richer perspective employers (which will herein also be known as a "Dickov", if he goes to Leicester.)

Hello,
Any update on Paul Dickov? Has he signed anywhere as of yet?

I have an inside source at TFC who I can't name... but a staff member who sits on the bench... who says that Dichov is very close to signing, and will probably be announced this week. Same person said the Suker rumours were completely unfounded.

Well wither your right or not, at least reading this has given me something to be optimistic about. The last few days I've been feeling down with TFC having been so stagnant since the trade window opened.

Half the people on here were talking like that at the start of the season, because Mo hadn't made a signing, and didn't let on whether he was working on it. Then Robert & Guevara showed up one day. It'll be the same here, denial, denial, silence, then a press conference with Totti & Kanu (or whoever).

But not likely.

I'll bet dollars to donuts (or even doughnuts if we wanna be all grammatical 'n crap) that by this time two weeks from now, we have a new striker. He HAS to have at least one deal done and waiting as things are.
