Ugh... from the last article, MLS website...

Julio Cesar, veteran defensive midfielder:

“When they don’t press me and let me play, I get more comfortable,” Julio Cesar said after scoring his first goal of the season in Saturday night’s 2-0 win over Toronto FC. “You can get in the attack if you don’t have the pressure you usually have in this position.”

Despite his frequent forays into the attacking third, Julio Cesar didn’t neglect his defensive duties. He just took care of them in Toronto’s end, rather than his own.

“When they didn’t press in the midfield, it gave me more opportunity to step a little bit up and press them for the second ball,” he said. “That way they don’t have a chance to surprise us with the counterattack. “

Other than that, lots of delusion from Mariner.

Mariner's post game comments weren't delusional at all. In fact, he was bang on.

I think it's a refreshing change to hear a coach stand by his players as opposed to throw them under the bus.

Avila beat Nielsen, but instead of finding the net, the ball amazingly caromed off the left, then the right post without ever crossing the goal line. It was a moment of astoundingly cruel luck that, unfortunately for the Reds, typified a night of many chances and no gratification.

“I lost count of the chances we had,” newly-appointed TFC head coach Paul Mariner told MLSsoccer.com in a telephone interview after the game. “I stopped at five but someone said we had seven.”

Toronto answered back with several opportunities of their own, most notably two by striker Danny Koevermans. Soon after Sporting’s second, Nielsen palmed away a header from the Dutchman that seemed destined for goal.

In the second half, a wonderful through-ball from Luis Silva found Koevermans one-on-one with Nielsen, but the Dane’s kick-save preserved the shutout.

The loss dropped TFC to a 1-10 record in the league, while KC continued their rebound from a three-game losing streak in May. But after playing in mostly 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 formations under former head coach Aron Winter, the Reds are now adjusting to Mariner’s preferred 4-4-2.

Saturday proved that the adjustment is still a work in progress. But despite the dejected locker room after the game, Mariner says he “loved” being back on the sidelines, and was pleased with his team’s performance.

“I’m very proud of the players,” Mariner said, “because after the first 20 minutes we played well against a very good team who were at home.”

Soccer is a low scoring game we all know that, therefore, you can't make mistakes, just like a surgeon operating on a patient a surgeon can't make a mistake . In soccer a player especially a defender can have a great game up to the point he makes that one mistake that causes a goal that loses the game for his team and both goals scored against TFC last night were mistakes especially that first goal where all three defenders Henry,Cann and Eckersley were at fault, you just can't make mistakes like that. Who cares what TFC did for most of the game the fact is like in so many games over the years stupid mistakes lead to all these losses.

TFC had chances. SKC had quite a few of their own that they couldn't convert in the first 30. This game could have been 6-0 before the half.

TFC possession was 39.4%, bulk of which came in the 2nd when SKC had essentially "shut it down"

They're bang on because he's cherry picking and talking only about what he chooses to remember.

The truth is that we were shit. Utter garbage for the important part of the game. Once it was 2-0 it was over.

A coach that is proud of that shit he put out there and looked as bad as they did for the first half hour is absolutely delusional. He's embarrassed because his team was schooled thoroughly by a team that plays a style that Mariner is not fond of.

He should have kept his head down and mouth shut after that game and talking about his pride in his players is nothing more than a smoke screen.

Yes Mariner is certainly delusional if he fully believes what he said. Perhaps he wants to stay positive to not get the players down even more. I'm also good with him not throwing players under the bus -- I didn't like it when Winter did that. But towards the supporters, and to show he's not delusional, it would have been better for him to say something like "Sorry I didn't get that one right, I'll sit down with my staff to review the game and determine what we can do better next time."
