After his contract expired at Galatasaray, Hakan Şükür got offers from Dubai, Quatar and Turkey but he will sign a deal worth 4 Million $ with Toronto FC.
According to a national television, Toronto FC's executives came to Istanbul last week and offered Hakan Şükür a deal worth 4 Million $. As he told press before that he'll choose what ever is good for his children's education. Toronto would be the best offer he got.

According to Lig TV, the Turkish Super Lig's all-time leading scorer Hakan Sukur is close to signing a one year 4 million dollar deal with Toronto FC. Reports state that the veteran 37-year old, who has played for Galatasaray, Inter, Torino, Parma and Blackburn, has been offered a contract by the MLS club and looks warmly on closing out his career in North America.

I know that he was left out of the Euro Cup in a somewhat controversial decision by the manager. Nihat (who took his roster spot) is a hell of a player anyways so if Hakan was good in qualifying then I'm sure he's still in great shape.

I'm honestly starting to think this Dichio thing with his concussions could turn out to be the final blow for him. I hope we see him again, but I'm not sure. Having said that, if Dichio is out, Dichov would be the perfect guy to bring in as he's known to be ruthless and a hard worker.

We're never going to sign a young world class player, but it would still be a massive upgrade to what we have now.

Using that logic let's give Cunny a few mill because money doesn't matter. When players are overpayed they tend to sit on the backburner and do a lot less....thousands of examples in every sport...it's now called the Barry Zito disease.

Difference is, Cunny is proven in the MLS. Sukur is proven on every stage of the game. World, EPL, Serie A, Turkish SuperCell. There is a reason why the Turk's call him King.

for a short time (1.5 seasons) this is a fine signing if true.
normally i'm against going beyond 34, but this guy is exactly what the team needs.
200K is nothing against the cap for this quality.
And as someone pointed out (Ben Knight?), TFC has some decent youth now on this team.. so it's not like 1 extra old guy will kill the future.

Suker won't have the legs he used to, but he is a clever player. Defenders in this league are pretty naive for the most part, he'll find space to cause havoc. We have players in the players in the midfield to get the ball to him.

Plus, it looks like we have a hell of a 16 year on the books, and a season or two learning from a player like Suker will do him a world of good.

I dunno, why don't you ask Mo Johnston.....

anyhow, there's no sense telling players we play on Fieldturf. The turf is approved, it's not going anywhere this season, it's not a secret to anyone that we have Fieldturf, and we have the magic bullet: Paul Winsper.

Using that logic let's give Cunny a few mill because money doesn't matter. When players are overpayed they tend to sit on the backburner and do a lot less....thousands of examples in every sport...it's now called the Barry Zito disease.

Comparing Cunny is useless... this is a guy that has scored over 250 goals for club and country and has played in top tournaments including Euro and the World Cup.

So the original question stands: I haven't watched him play enough down the years to form an opinion on his abilities. What sort of a player might we be getting?

A passionate player who can score goals on a whim. He won't have the pace these days, but he'll use his superior footballing mind to rip holes in MLS defenses.

He should work well with Guevara. Robert will now have a viable target from the wing. (Dichio never really was a threat on crosses, despite his height)

We'd be getting a proven goal scorer with a ton of skill. he's a pure striker who finds the back of the net often.

Sounds alright.

The "pace" we've had to-date (ahem, Cunny) has been useless. As you say, with the wingers we have, we want a good finisher with a head on his shoulders.

And no, Dichio isn't that sort of player, but that's another (insert number of threads here) thread.

We have a competent defense, they're making mistakes. If we score goals, the team will be much more confident. When the team plays properly, we play well. Our biggest and only real problem IMO is our strike force is severely lacking any threat.

One might also argue that ice is a little tougher on the body than FieldTurf and they play 82 straight games on the stuff. ;)

Look I hate the turf also. But only for the reason that we can't sign players to play on it. Here is a world class player that actually wants to come and play here despite the turf.

Sometimes we make it seem that anyone over 30 who steps on the plastic pitch is crippled at the end of 90 minutes... which clearly isn't the case.

Dunno if you noticed, but we played 3 at th back against Shitcago, and previous to that we have been using our wide backs as extra Mids most of season.

Brennan and Wynne have been playing the whole damn pitch this year, and no matter how fast Wynne is, he will never be able to be everywhere. He makes mistakes simply because if anyone runs the pitch from one end to the other, makes a cross and then runs all the way back to defend, he's going to make a mistake or two.

And Jimmy just can't do that kind of thing, even though he wishes he could.

Velez is in the box and scooting back on every corner/free kick.

Bottom line is, in Carver's effort to score goals, he has been sacrificing defense and relying on Suuton and Edwards. A striker will help settle things down and let the back line be a back line again.

Yes. Fieldturf is just an excuse. Players dont sign here for other reasons, it's not becuase of the turf. Tons of players in europe practice on field turf 6 days a week in training and then for 90 minutes once a week they play a game on so-called "nice grass." You actually believe that it's the turf that they're so concerned about, get real. They play/practice on fieldturf 95% of the time.

Hey guys...My first post on the board. I've been a seasons ticket holder since the start and love the community you got going here!

Anyways, just wanted to say that although signing young guns would obviously be ideal, I like the idea of bringing in some players who have reached the point in their career where they want to settle down, put their kids in a good school, etc...These type of guys seem to stay happier longer. When your heart isn't in a city completely (maybe you have dreams of Europe, etc...) you over-emphasize the problems you might be having.

I'm sure Sakur has been through enough drama throughout his career and would be happy to play for some amazing fans and to be living in a world-class city. Great move it happens.

Anyone else think he might be lining up someone at a year from now? It could also be the nature of the DP position, but I have a feeling he might be lining a particular player already.

I think Sukur is a good fit because Mo has seen what a body like Dichio can do in this league. Now make him faster, more skilled and a better scoring touch and we've go a monster in Sukur.

This is HUGE for TFC if it actually works out. . but 1 year? does that mean a calenar year? or does that mean he will not play until NEXT season? or. . umm. . . how is this going to work, we are already half way through the season.

This will defnitly give less pitch tocover for our backs, and hopefully the chance to choke out any attack in the mid-field. . something we looked like we had mastered in the early games post-Rickets /Robert /Guevarra

Dichio & Cunny were (supposed) to be - Thunder and Lightning, now we could have Sukur and Ibrahim - Father & Son.

Brings up an interesting point though: are we numb to the age thing now that we have had so many 35+ strikers linked to TFC?

I mean lets face it guys....a former top striker in the world like Hakan Sukur is probably better at 37 than any other striker in MLS. The only question is his pace. If he still has that then this will be an amazing piece of the puzzle

For sure. Naturally I'd prefer a 28/29 Sukur but I doubt that'll happen. Skill in this league is more important than pace. Ricketts isn't too fast and he's done very well. Sukur obviously has a footballing brain and more natural talent than Danny D. Danny D has been successful with basically nothing but a good touch and a brain.

Just reading the info on him now. I gotta admit, my knowledge of the Turkish League is limited. Some points are of concern, though. Maybe its just me, but a 36 yo playing on Field Turf doesn't sit well with me. Yes, I understand that the issue of age isn't so black-and-white, but the trends prove that age is linked to recovery times. Also, his goal to appreance ration has dropped off quite a bit from his 1995-2000 stay with Gala to 2003-2008. Of course, there could be a lot of factors in this, but its still something to think about.

Again, I can't really say I'm disappointed if this is true because I don't know much about his career, but with regards to a DP signing, I will say was I expecting a much younger player with the potential to stay with the club for 4-5 years or so and continue developing in some respects.

Dichio is the best player for toronto, how old his he?

Comparing Sukur to any striker in MLS, is like comparing Mats Sundin to a hockey player in the Italian hockey league.

DP contracts are only good for up to 2 years ... and he will make an immediate impact up front, and be the right fit to fill the missing piece of the puzzle and get our attack solidified which will take off some pressure on the defense.

I believe it's a good investment.

Has anybody thought what that means to our profit margin? Are we going to get a ticket hike, and be told it's because we have a 37 year old DP?

Cash, if you honestly think we can pick up a younger player with the potential for 4-5 years... it sure ain't gonna be our DP until at LEAST after '09 when the next CBA meeting comes up.

He's a proven finisher in top quality leagues around the world. A legend for the Turkish national team and they call him 'King'.

He's a year older than Blanco, who's playing quite well and very consistantly... and he's a fucking hunchback FFS.

He's got more skill than Dichio and Cunny combined, still.

A business with $1mil profit in their first year? I think they owe us at least a DP.

07-14-2008, 01:44 PM
^^ They wouldn't sign the guy to any kind of long-term contract, so is burning out on turf really that much of a concern? Also, there is no way any GM is going to sign a player to a contract this big for anything longer than 2 years considering the CBA up for renegotiation in 1.5 years. That and no agent would encourage a player otherwise.

Realistically, signing him for the rest of the this season and next is of vrtually no risk given the parity in this league and the anticipated changes to the CBA after 01/10.

Look at all the other DP's in the league... expecting to be able to sign a young player in his prime to a team in northamerica for 4-5 years, I can't see that happening for a while yet.

If it is gonna cost an extra buck or two per game to see some more goals go in the back of the net then I am OK with that. Heck I would pay that to not have to see Cunny blow any more chances.

By the way... we are talking about an organization that went from spending 62-65 million in player salaries before the NHL lockout down to spending 36-49 over the last 3 seasons.

I think they can afford to donwload some of that 4mil.

As do I, but for different reasons.

I think this is one of those "what happens in the old country, stays in the old country" moments.

Now then, I know the name and he's made his mark down the years, but I haven't watched him play much. What sort of a player are we getting here?

First Harry Kewell sign with Galatasaray, now TFC signs Sukur....it's been a rough week.

With that in mind, Sukur is a still a very good player who will score goals in this league...bah, I'm too torn about it to comment on it...

Thats fine, but for $4 million, we must have had greater options than a 37 year old. It's silly money.

Last year Mo told a member of this board that Robbie Fowler wanted $1 million to come here, and that was too much. Funnily enough he just signed for Blackburn.

I may not know much about world football, but that's a full EPL striker wage, that's not what a 37 year old from Galatasaray is worth
