Nigel Reed ‏Curiouser & curiouser. #TFC (http://redpatchboys.ca/#!/search/%23TFC) to make "major announcement" at 1.30pm. Interesting timing during #MLS (http://redpatchboys.ca/#!/search/%23MLS) break

I doubt it will be people getting fired - I don't think they'd go for this kind of pomp and circumstance for a sombre occasion like that. I haven't heard of TFC being interested in any player worthy of the "Major Announcement" treatment, either.

This is curious, indeed. But probably unerwhelming.

From the tone of the tweets from various low-level MLSE staff, I'd guess they actually don't know what the announcement is ... or didn't 2 hours ago at least ...

Molinaro was tweeting that Winter was called to an MLSE board meeting this morning.

Even if this doesn't involve Winter, that's a clue. There was an MLSE board meeting this morning. This likely goes to someone getting walking or transfer papers. And I'd guess Winter moving or leaving is the most likely.

For the record, 99.9% of TFC major announcements over the past 6 years have been thoroughly underwhelming.

You bite your tongue!

I am hoping they announce that they're looking at a few players to bring in, maybe a striker, maybe a central defender.

:drinking:

I love that this announcement basically just became this morning's running joke on Twitter.

Appointing an interim manager for the rest of the season is basically waving the white flag that they are giving up and this season is a write off. They need to find someone this year so the young players get some coaching that will be useful to next year's strategy. At 19 years old having an interim manager who will be replaced in 8 months is a lot of wasted development time.

Oh screw it what does it matter. We trade all our prospects for allocation money and a bag of balls.

The wording of the G&M article makes me think they may have gotten a strategic club leak, trying to spin Mariner positively. If this is true, we are most definitely the worst run team in all of world football. Not a Winter fan, but the timing of this is all wrong.

From a publicity perspective it is almost perfect. All the soccer news is going to be so focused on the Euros for the next 4 weeks that no one will notice. In the short term the news is burried by all the Euro Previews on the major sports channels and for the next few weeks anything TFC will do is going to be overshadowed by the tournament so when people come out of their Euros Stupor they are going to forget what ever happened and any bad publicity that sounds at all like rearranging the chairs on the Titanic will have blown over.

I say almost perfect because they probably should have done it at 11am tomorrow. Just before kick off of the Euros. Dam TFC a day early and a dollar short.

I for one am quite happy with the change. Mariner will use tactics that can actually suit all our slowass players. Frings being the pivot in midfield was scary based on his age. A couple of knocks and we have a nice 0-9 losing streak. At Plymouth, Mariner was handed a sinking ship with passangers who couldn't swim, terrible team. His MLS knowledge and lack of ego (from reports) might be just what this team needs.

I feel that the whole business about Winter "stepping down" is just a gimmick by the FO. Oh hey coach, we are going to get rid of your assistant coach you brought in to help you run things and throw in an inexperienced player-coach in Jimmy. Hey, the fans love him! Sweeeeeet!

Mariner kick and hoof and Jim fucking Brennan on our bench.

It's 2007 all over again.

If we abandon the philosophy that was put in place to further the game in this city and country and go back to playing like its 1985 again...I'm out.

It's fucking disgusting.

Fine...fire Winter...he wasn't working out (even though I'd have had more patience) but to promote Brennan and Mariner and leave cochrane In place is a fucking joke.

I hate everything about this club right now. So idiotic.

Agreed.

If we go back to kick and hoof then I am done with this team too.

Our only hope is Rogers/Bell get a new CEO of TFC who is a soccer guy who can build this team properly like a proper soccer club.

One win? One win in ten games and you call that a "groove"? Is it any wonder Toronto never wins anything. The bar couldn't possibly be lower.

Aron Winter's MLS record as boss of TFC; 44 matches, 7 wins, 15 draws, 22 losses. Scored 44. Conceded 80.

TFC is a shit show, and Tom Anselmi deserves most of the blame, but Winter did not deserve to be a head coach.

That should help you understand my statement a little better. im not saying they were in a groove. I was saying they were starting to get into the groove with the Voyaguers cup tournament wins and the first win of the mls season. If I recall correctly Aron Winter was behind the bench for the entire Voyageurs cup no? compared to what we have seen since march, the last 2 or so weeks have been an improvement no?

Anselmi has no answers. The club has been backwards since day 1 and he is the common denominator. Mariner is having to take over on every tough question from the reporters. I've had enough. We're on an intl break in the schedule, not even playing (losing), and I am more pissed off than ever.

I kinda got the feeling that Winter left the team "high and dry" when he didnt make the defensive moves ahead of the preseason and draft while the other teams in MLS improved their weak defenses. Paul Mariner, I dont think is the answer, but the team needs stability and possibly a manager with experience that can bring in players outside of MLS to boost the roster.

Is Bob DeKlerk gone as well?

3. EVERY single ST holder should be given a free ticket to the liverpool game as a goodwill gesture.
4. Tom Ass needs to man up and step down, so that way they can bring in someone that can answer the questions that he cant

No he didnt, it was Chris Cummins as an interim manager after John Carver's departure. I can deal with Paul Mariner getting this wrong but Tom Anselmi should know that this took place in 2009 and not 2007, as well that the manager wasnt John Carver now at Newcastle.

Tom said he has no idea what has gone wrong or how to fix it. What the journalists should have asked is if you don't know how to fix it why don't you step down and get someone to do this job that does?

And if you don't know what is the problem, what makes you think Mariner could be the solution?

Those would be my questions.

This is what many of you wanted!!!!!

You wanted Winter gone ASAP.
What did you think they were going to do? Interview coaches and find a competent one, mid season, while the team was awful?

We knew that it they fired Winter we'd get the shit show that is cochrane/mariner/Brennan.

It's a fucking joke. The academy is pointless now. "hey son....wouldn't you love to grow up and be a professional footballer like....ummm....Jim Brennan?"

"no thanks dad. I'll stay at my club thanks. TFC is for rejects that are stuck in the past"

Anselmi thinks you are all fools. If you spend ANY MONEY on TFC, Anselmi is laughing at you.

I have cited this a bunch of times here, but it is so emblamatic of his attitude towards this franchise, and towards the fans who pay money to see it. When Anselmi was on Prime Time Sports, about two or three years ago now, before a friendly against...it might have been Pachuca, but I am not sure, he conceeded that the game would be an opportunity for the squad to play some development guys and let the tired first team guys take a much needed rest.

Bob asked if tickets would be cheaper because, as Anselmi had just said, this game was going to involve ALOT of reserves, and be a lower quality product. Anselmi just laughed at the suggestion.

I haven't paid for a TFC ticket in three years. If you are still doing so, than you have nobody to blame but yourself for the fact that that smug asshole was sitting up there today and avoiding any accountability.

STOP BUYING TICKETS.

I don't think anyone is terribly upset with Winter's dismissal. I think everyone is confused by the awkward timing of this announcement, and enraged at the manner in which Tom Anselmi has embarassed the organization yet again. If Anselmi made the appropriate and honorable gesture of stepping down as well, I think the tone in this thread would be entirely different.

I am no longer a member of the group and honestly just don't have the time in my life right now to organize anything substantial but I want to see a relentless drive from the supporters of this club to get Tom Anselmi away from TFC. I know I will do whatever it is I can. Whether its signs, banners, cards to hand out or chants there has to be a push to remove him from TFC.

It doesn't have to take over every match but I think every match has to have at least a small reminder that Tom Anselmi has to go.
