Watching New York vs Charleston right now, NY fielding a lot of first team. Amadou Sanyang now plays for Charleston

That's interesting. LA is mainly sending their reserves to their match against Carolina.
GO CHARLESTON!!!! I love those guys, they were good hosts for TFC.

it's 1-0 NY from Cooper, who just can't stop scoring. remember when people doubted whether he still had goals in him?

Watching LA @ Carolina, which apparently is a sell out. 1-0 LA on Noonan goal from Barrett assist (4 games in a row with an assist for Barrett)

Oldtimer

The Battery look like the D-3 team they are. NY looks like they are barely running in second gear.

Yohan
05-29-2012, 07:31 PM
lol. Barrett pulls a hammy again

edit: no, just his typical cramps

Oldtimer

The Chad we know so well.

The Carolina game is much better attended, even with LA's second-stringer line (no Beckham).

to be fair, there`s no way Michigan should be allowed to host this game in that arena. Look at the bounce the ball takes. They`re playing on concrete. Plus there`s no room around the pitch for a decent run up to a throw.

Surely there`s a regulation sized grass field somewhere around Pontiac ?

Except theoretically RSL seemed to give a damn. They arranged home-field advantage; had many of their top players out there; and at least some of them tried hard, even some nasty fouls near the end. But yeah, their minds didn't seem into it. SO many missed easy chances for RSL.

when you look at all the brackets and everything is quite an impressive tournament in the US with all the teams and everything. It just a shame most people don't care about it, and such few fans often show up. And some of the teams, well they have no stadium.

I think the Canadian Championship would be pretty good if we could get it to 8 teams rather then just 4. And every team having a stadium of at least 5k or bigger.

ryan
05-30-2012, 09:57 AM
I think these upsets are good for the tourney really. Some MLS clubs should be embarrassed, the players should be, the fans should be mad. Make them take it more serious next year as well as giving confidence to the lower tier clubs that they can do quite well in this cup.

The slowest pitch invasion you'll ever see!

"Tootles!" lmao.

SMH We were 2 fucking feet away from the field of play, why run? Section 8 brought a bus, 40-50 people, they were sad. Bucks usually draw 300-400 people on average, had a capacity crowd of 2000. Chicago did have a lot of trouble with the FieldTurf but I wouldn't say the surface is worse than the the Big O. Plus the Fire had some time to practice on it.

Ironically, with the Crew losing to the Dutch Ovens, the Bucks go from playing an MLS team in Round 3 to playing a shitty USL Pro team (div. 3) in Round 4. I'd say our chance of getting to the QF are good.

Ultimate Soccer is not a bad facility, they have a liquor license, so they are alright by me.

The results of the US Open Cup have demonstrated that for the most part, MLS sides that took the competition seriously enough to field a competitive lineup advanced and those that started their reserve squads were embarassed.

PUMPED Cal FC beat the Timbers! Upset I didn't get to watch it as it wasn't available on the iPad, it was the matchup I was most looking forward to.

MLS batted .500 in the round, not good. But seriously on a $2.8m cap your bench is going to be made up of mostly guys who are not a whole lot better than NASL guys. First team v First team lower sides don't stand a chance but after that the gap isn't huge.

Even though they got killed the goal for Atlanta last night was nice bit of skill.

How many teams in the league have seen a player or 2 over the last 2 days that they can bring in to their squad on the cheap?

All these upsets are either really embarrassing for MLS, or a really great sign for the future of American soccer.

There's a few different things to think about with this. One - having all the US MLS teams come in the 3rd Round created a lot more interest than the ridiculous MLS play in games. Two - fair to continue to ask questions about whether the MLS reserve league is playing any beneficial role for MLS bench players. Three - maybe it's time at last to clear the way for player movement between MLS and the two lower pro divisions. There is some, for example New York just loaned rookie Corey Herzog to USL Pro side Wilmington. But there is a lot of obstacles due to the semi-competitive mindset (in a business sense) between MLS, NASL and USL.

Actually Torbor. May think Wynalda created the team just to stick it to MLS clubs that have passed him over for coaching jobs. See here http://blogs.thescore.com/footyblog/2012/05/28/davis-major-league-soccers-errant-son-returns-to-teach-it-a-lesson/

I think the last two are very important points, although I wouldn't dismiss the first one. You know that nagging feeling you get that some players we watch out there aren't worth their salt? Might be a little more accurate than Don Garber wants us to believe. Depth continues to be a huge issue that will haunt this league until improvements are made. While in the past the reserve league was an obvious joke, now it's probably only been upgraded to below par.

The loan thing has puzzled me for a while. MLS is hurting the development of it's own players by preventing these deals.

Nope, ringers. Mostly former U.S. youth system players who weren`t drafted after university. They`re in teh men`s league in Oxnard, California but have played five fewer games than any other team as they didn`t join the league to compete, just to prep for the tournament and be considered 'official.'

Wynalda has said his purpose was to demonstrate MLS is missing out on good players due to poor evaluation.

Carolina RailHawks 1, Chivas USA 2
Michigan Bucks 1, Dayton Dutch Lions 2 (AET)
Harrisburg City Islanders 3, New York Red Bulls 1 (AET)
D.C. United 1, Philadelphia Union 2 (AET)
Sporting Kansas City 2, Colorado Rapids 0San Antonio Scorpions 1, Charlotte Eagles 2 (AET)
Seattle Sounders 5, Cal FC 0San Jose Earthquakes 1, Minnesota Stars 0

Only 3 non-MLS sides left. Unfortunate to see Cal FC get stomped but I guess it was bound to happen. Good on Harrisburg for winning a game no one thought they would.

As a side note I heard on the radio today that Charlotte are owned by a Christian group that only allow Christians to play for them. Apparently they at one time even released a player after they had signed him because they found out he was a Morman. The caller also stated that while the team does a lot of community work that it is done to promote the religion first and the team second. I was surprised to hear that this morning.
