More positive news for the game in Canada, even if it had to be set by the Limp Act:

The game was played before 60,860, which set a new professional soccer attendance mark at the Olympic Stadium, and bettered the previous Canadian best of 60,342 in 1983 when the Vancouver Whitecaps took on the Seattle Sounders in a newly built BC Place.

A new Canadian record for club football in Canada.

Many in attendance at Saturday's game were drawn by mega-star David Beckham, and the L.A. midfielder didn’t disappoint, scoring on a trade-mark free kick in the second half to earn a point for his club.

;)

Beckham scored a great set-piece goal, leading to a 1-1 tie:

Loved seeing that. My desire to see the game grow in this country far outstrips my dislike for Montreal.

That was a pretty nicely hit free kick, I watched the whole game, Matteo Ferrari and Nelson Rivas were outstanding as the centre back pairing. I was extremely jealous to see them play so well together. I was thinking that the Impact only need to upgrade at striker and move Corradi to a back up role and they would be a pretty team and then the announcer said that they were close to signing Marco DeVaio in the summer. God Damn, my guess is they will continue their current pace for the rest of the season, but they wont make the playoffs.

I forgot to mention that with Ferrari and Rivas in defense they went with a 4-2-3-1 vs the defending MLS champions.

--------------------------Ricketts----------------------
Camara--------Ferrari----------------Rivas-------Brovski
--------------------------------------------------------
---------------Felipe---------------Warner--------------
Mapp---------------------Arnaud-----------------Neagle
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------Corradi-----------------------

There were alot of chances and it was an entertaining match from my POV.

shouldn't the headline be "David Beckham sets a Canadian attendance record"?

LOL. They're averaging 39K a game. What a JOKE! And to think they've done it without a single real banner. lol

It is amazing that Montreal has their center of defence sorted out in year 1.The pairing of Rivas and Ferrarri looked really good.

I don't get why people in Toronto would mock Montreal for cheering for Goldenballs. We here in Toronto have just as many Beckham fans that do the same thing they did in Montreal.

Might be his worst look ever. Which is saying something.

I think he went to his barber and asked for the "Brek Shea"

As long as Saputo is sold out the rest of the season I don't spite them for only selling out Olymique one game. As much as I disagree with the importance placed on starpower its no different than anywhere else in MLS.

Anybody pissed he actually showed up for Montreal's first game v LA? We had to wait 3 years before he actually played us.

I love the Impact fans cheering for Beckham when he scored. I mean these guys are wearing Impact gear and cheering for the opposite team!! No shame...or clue.

And those people are just as embarrassing as the Montreal fans who were cheering.

100% agree, but i guess March 7th was too long ago for people to remember that he was one of the reasons skydome was sold out.

Really? I mean I hate MTL as much as anyone here, but we all know how many people just pay for tickets to go to their first soccer game in Canada just cus Becks is on the field.

I don't care what brought them to the game. If it was a glow-in-the-dark pitch that brought the casuals they should at least realize there's a local team to support. We can expect them to at least support their local soccer team, no?

I guess we're veering into the Liverpool TFC threads line of talk but I think its important.

People bought tickets and cheered for Lin and Yao at the Raptors games, so only thing we can expect is for people to buy tickets for the big show in town. Unfortunately this is the reality of sports and supporters culture in Canada's big cities. It is what it is.

A little from Column A, a little from Column B.

Joking aside, I was able to catch fragments of the game while out furniture shopping and from what I did see, both teams put on a pretty good display. All said, I do find some joy in the fact that while we can beat LA on their home pitch, Montreal has to be content with a draw played in their hometown.

Yes but it goes without saying that we'll do our part to change that little by little (Not raptors fans. That's somebody else's problem:prrr:)

Shame that it took goldenballs coming to town that allowed for the record to be broken, but to be expected I guess. At least the crowd got what it wanted - he scored a goal from a freekick. Can't be too harsh on the Montreal crowd - this city really isn't much different from the "event", "place to be seen" perspective.
