Morning D

I don't really read John Molinaro anymore but since he is the only reporter that seems to have wanted to know what happened with Vukovic I gave him a click.

"Rongen told me that the club felt Vukovic was not ready to make the jump to the senior team, and that they have two younger academy forwards that they want to give more playing time to. Keeping Vukovic around would have stood in the way of the development of those players, hence the decision to let him go."

A lot of people here are quick to jump all over management for every decision without knowing the full story. The people running our academy know what they are doing. Winter and de Klerk have been here long enough to know the talent level in the league. They, along with Rongen, have been developing players long enough to know when a player has what it takes.

If they don't believe a player can perform at the level they need them to it does the system no good to hang onto said player. Especially with potential future senior players looking to get their shot.

This is always a good read - a document on Ajax youth development.

If you are questioning the release of Vukovic - read this and ask yourself - how many of the points they talk about on there do you really know about him? Most of us, myself included know little beyond the fact that he scored a lot in the CSL. I takes a lot more than being prolific in a semi-professional league to succeed as a pro.

I hope they aren't rushing Frings back too early. With older players, sometimes playing them too early is a disaster. I had a grade 2 ankle strain a couple of years ago, played on it after 3 weeks out, and strained it again within ten minutes of playing. Strains are the worst thing to try and rush back. I'd rather see Frings miss a week or so longer and make sure he's fully fit. I hope Winter is sensible about this!

I just published my story on Vukovic based on my 1-on-1 talk with Rongen, who had some interesting things to say:

Sounds like Rongen knows what he's talking about. I guess we'll see.

" problems playing with the back to the goal" is he not strong enough to hold the ball up, and to slow to run by defenders? If that is the case, I would have to agree this is not a great combination for a CF.

Idealy, a CF has a bit of both, but you have to have at least one or the other. If you have neither, no matter how good positionaly you are, you will either be knocked off the ball and the shot, or just never be able to create space for yourself.

The way Vukovic is described sounds a bit like Kovermans style, i.e. he can't bring the ball in from outside the box but relies almost wholly on service. I guess it's good enough for the present but not for the future..

^ From what I gather he also said, that Vukovic is not good enough playing with his back to goal, from which I take to mean, he is not strong enough to hold of defenders, or create space by using leverage.

Both Kovermans and Dichio despite there lack of speed, were very good at ussing their size and strengh in the box, to hold up the ball, create space, and create opportunities.

I have been somewhat surprised at Koeverman's reticence to use his size. With DK it's about positioning and service but I have not seen him fight off defenders like DD. I don't feel good or bad about it since he should do what works for him, it's just an observation.

^ I think Koeverman's is OK at ussing his size, but yes DD was amazing at it, he was very aggresive with defenders, and it paid dividends. I love that kind of CF.

If your game is about positioning and service and you do not have size, it is very easy for a defender to knock you out of position, so that you cannot take advantage of good service, and lose the position. Within 18 yeards of the goal it can be a game of inches.

Agreed. He tries to maneuver around people instead of forcing defenders to adapt around him. That's just his style I guess.
Thing about DD is he ran through people, MLS defenders at the time couldn't contain him.
