Corradi to join Ferrari at Impact
By Football Italia staff
http://www.football-italia.net/sites/default/files/imagecache/main_photo/[type]/[nid]/corradi490ai.jpg

Former Italian international Bernardo Corradi is on the verge of signing for MLS outfit Montreal Impact.
Corradi, two goals in 13 caps for Italy, is very close to signing a contract with the Canadian club where he will team up with defender Matteo Ferrari.
The almost 36-year-old has been without a club since his contract at Udinese expired in June 2011.
The former Chievo, Inter, Parma, Manchester City and Lazio man trained with Lega Pro side Monza this season before flying out for a trial with Impact in late February.

Montreal is really going with a veteran laden squad to try to have immediate success in the league. It's too much of a short term approach for my liking, but Saputo knows the Montreal fan base will not support a long term rebuild if it means having a non competitive club for a few years.

I have to question how much cheese man has his hands on the operation. I don't think Marsch started in his head with this current list of players they are pursuing.

Needless to say, I hope it works out for them (except against us) because Canada really needs a few healthy clubs.

I'm not sure people here realize how bad Ballack has become. He's been a shell of his former self since joining Chelsea, but he's horrible now. The German team and his club team have tried to organize cermemonials for him just to get him to retire with some class. Instead he takes shots at everyone around him. If an MLS team actually takes him as a DP they're being taken for a ride.

http://www.mercurynews.com/earthquakes/ci_20224018/defender-nana-attakora-blames-earthquakes-being-trade-limbo

Canadian defender Nana Attakora has blamed the Earthquakes for holding back his professional career in another reminder that last summer's blockbuster trade with Toronto FC has not gone well.

In an interview Tuesday night with Sportsnet.ca., Attakora blasted Quakes management for making it difficult to move on to another Major League Soccer team while retaining his rights.

"San Jose is very frustrating," he said. "They just wanted too much and no team was willing to do it, especially as they had no guarantees that I would re-sign with them because of my contract situation."

The Earthquakes confirmed Wednesday that they are actively trying to trade the center back. A club spokesman also said the team had offered Attakora a new contract during the offseason.

But team officials declined to say anything else about the player's comments. Attakora's agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Unfortunately, TFC don't have allocation money to offer the Union.

Ummm... yeah. Not sure if you're trying too hard to have a different opinion or if you're just ass backwards wrong.

Danny Califf is a physical and aggressive CB with decent aerial ability and marking and positioning. As captain of Philly Union, he's got some leadership quality and ability to organize the back line.

He's starting to be prone to brain farts, and at 32, slowing down a lot, so has trouble with pacy defenders. He's also got a little bit of reputation as a little too aggressive and red mist waiting to happen. Also, he made 250k last year, so TFC will have cap room issues.

From the article:

He will join the Impact on June 16, and will be available once the transfer window opens on June 27. The club will work to make him available for his first game that day versus Toronto FC.

Maybe I'm just snake-bitten from losing to expansion teams in the season openers and having Lunjberg score against us, but I get an ominous feeling about any kind of debut in a game against us.

I'd rather have a 35 year old whose a starter in Serie A than some American/Canadian 28 year old whose claim to fame is that he played NCAA ball before joining the MLS. This league is full of physical players. If we don't improve the technical ability and tactical smarts of the MLS overall, it will always been seen a being a small step above League One in England.

I'd take Di Vaio over Johnson in a second. I realize most Toronto supporters don't watch anything but the EPL, (YA they scream lets sign Robbie Cocaine Fowler!"-- what's Italy? ) but imagine Danny Murphy Captain of Fulham age 35 signing with us to replace JDG. We'd have a fucking parade down Queen Street.

BTW how old is Frings again? He's way to old to be playing MLS...lol

"Toronto" you're going to need to have a look around to get a feel for support in this city, and this league. Most of us (in the entire league) did not grow up with MLS therefore we all have our foreign preferences. You'll find entire sections devoted to different nation's leagues and to pigeonhole all TFC support as one type of support is making sweeping statements and makes one look uninformed. Try to avoid that.

As to diversity, I can attest that TFCs fanbase is one of the most diverse and it's easy to see why when one looks at the make up of the city itself.

And we aren't 0-10.

I hate to make comparisons to the most cherished player in club history, but in all honestly Dichio's thing was that he put his all-in week after week. I don't know how one can come to the conclusion he's a better player than Corradi though.

Edit: maybe as Voodoodaddy has point out, they could be considered very close to say the least. The one thing I would say about Corradi from watching him is that he's still a little bit more mobile than Dichio and technically very apt.

I don't think I'd call them a success yet, but it's a decent start. I find it interesting that an owner is actively leveraging his profile to attract players and make connections.

What are the TFC "scouts" doing to help us? Our track record at finding talent is beyond terrible.

I've only been following this league since TFC joined, but it was already the "make it up as you go" league then. Any teams' owners could push the league for rule changes to get what they want, it's just it's always the same ones doing the pushing, it seems.

Montreal will be signing two DPs in the near future probably with the next two weeks. A person I trust told me that the L'Impact will be signing Nesta and Seedorf.

Personally I like the idea of signing Seedorf, but the signing of Nesta is a head scratcher as he has has missed significant time over the past couple of year. He can't seem to stay healthy, but of he can the combo of him and Ferrari in the middle they will have the best defense in the league.

Here's betting we see Kaka sign with NY Red Bulls.

I kid you not. First, his agent tells Euro press he wants to play in MLS and it's "his dream to live in the U.S." Then, Arlo White says during the Vancouver game that Hans Backe has told him they're on the verge of a DP signing that, if they pull it off, "we'll be unbeatable."

To draw that level of delusion from him it has to be someone big, and the timing seems to fit.

It resets every year based on the previous year's results.

With the addition of Montreal, they had first spot and took Johnson and traded him to Seattle. Vancouver were next and have now traded their spot. That leaves New England and then Toronto.

Will be really interesting to see what happens with the contracts at Rangers. As that could leave Carlos Bocanegra, Alejandro Bedoya and Maurice Edu the opportunity to come back to MLS and subject to allocation.

I don't know if I'd call it a good signing. Not that he isn't a good player but the Whitecaps already have a DP striker as well as a few other decent options up front.

I don't know if I'd call it a good signing. Not that he isn't a good player but the Whitecaps already have a DP striker as well as a few other decent options up front.
You're not the only one to hold this opinion:

He's produced well for Scotland, of course. Miller can't be a terrible player: his two goals in his final twenty-two Cardiff City matches (all competitions) was catastrophic but doesn't represent his career. He's got speed and skill but is pretty much a straight-up scorer rather than an all-rounder in the Sebastien Le Toux (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/mls/players/111296/sebastien-le-toux) mold. He's also an older player trying to adjust to a very different league. He's a speed merchant at an age when speedsters almost inevitably start to lose a step. He's now washed out of two leagues (the Turkish Premier and English Championship) that aren't so much better than MLS.

Miller is also filling a position where we don't need the help. Eric Hassli and Camilo Sanvezzo (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/mls/players/130057/camilo-sanvezzo) have both scored at levels we'd be delighted in from Miller and Darren Mattocks (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/mls/players/151197/darren-mattocks) certainly looks promising. If the problem is that Vancouver has talented forwards but still can't get goals, the solution is not to add additional forwards. This should be self-evident but here we are.

http://www.eightysixforever.com/2012/7/16/3162603/vancouver-whitecaps-sign-forward-kenny-miller-as-designated-player

Also for once rather our FO took their time with any potential deals until we know the extent of Koevermans injury.
Good point. Take your time, and get it right:

Just how long the Dutchman is out will probably play a role in how Mariner chooses to address this problem -- whether to try and struggle through with the current squad, or to go out and bring in a proven striker.
In a sense, the poor start to the season is a blessing as with very little realistic prospects for success, there should be less pressure on Mariner to make a short-term move rather than thinking of what's best for the long-term. Whatever he does it will be difficult to replace the goals Koevermans brings, and will make the task of getting points while rebuilding his team for the future all the tougher.

What remains to be seen is how this affects the Sounders' roster. The club already employs three DPs (Fredy Montero, Mauro Rosales and Alvaro Fernandez), and according to reports out of Colombia, talks of a Fernandez loan to Deportivo Cali fell apart. Fernandez is the most likely of the three to be shipped out, but it is also possible that one of the three current DPs will be moved out of a DP slot.

should be interesting to see how this all shakes down.

I like the move too. Christian is a playmaker rather than a goal scorer. Kaiserslautern were particularly poor last season. Only 23 points with 24 goals for and 54 goals against. Ignoring the previous season, Christian had 17 assists from 32 Bundesliga matches in 2010/2011. In his 3 seasons with MSV Duisburg in the 2. Bundesliga, he had 22 assists in 69 starts.

Seattle Sounders negotiating with Real España's Mario Martinez:

That last part was clearly alluding to Martinez, who several outlets in Honduras are reporting is set to join the Sounders on loan once his time with the Honduras Olympic team is over. The left-footed midfielder, who featured in Los Catrachos' draw with Morocco on Thursday, could be a potential replacement for Fernandez.

“He’s a young player that we’ve been tracking for a while,” Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said about Martinez. “He’s got a very good left foot. He’s got a good shot from distance. He’s another player who’s very good on service and set pieces and dead balls. He’s got some Brad Davis qualities in terms of his services. He’s a player we think has a big upside.”

DC United acquired AM Raphael Augusto on loan from Fluminese:

Friday’s late-night close of Major League Soccer’s summer transfer window brought a minor transaction for D.C. United, which completed the loan acquisition of 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Raphael Augusto from Fluminese.

Augusto has played recently for America-RN of the Brazilian Serie B, and he has Brazil under-21 national team experience.

While it’s clear that he’s a project player for D.C. United and not a prized signing that is expected to make an immediate impact, Augusto could change the depth chart slightly in the middle of the field.

United’s insertion of Lewis Neal into the starting central playmaking role against Columbus with Branko Boskovic out injured wasn’t a success. With Dwayne De Rosario proving effective at forward, D.C. needs better cover for Boskovic. Perhaps Augusto could provide that service.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/d.c.-united-adds-brazilian-midfielder/article/2503432

"Raphael is a talented midfielder with excellent athletic qualities and great feet," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "We are excited about his upside and look forward to getting him integrated into our group."

The move was made possible because United striker Maicon Santos (http://www.dcunited.com/player/maicon-santos) has obtained his green card and will no longer occupy an international slot on the club’s roster.

Houston is in negotiations with Ricardo Clark:

The Dynamo are working to finalize an agreement to bring former MLS All-Star and US international Ricardo Clark back to Houston.

Dynamo president Chris Canetti confirmed to MLSsoccer.com on Saturday that the club is actively negotiating with the World Cup veteran and is hoping to put the final touches on bringing the fan favorite back into the fold.

“I can confirm that the Dynamo are interested in finding a way to sign Rico and are in the process of finding a way to do so,” Canetti told MLSsoccer.com. “Ongoing negotiations are occurring in an effort to bring him here.”

With the transfer window closed for making moves for players under contract, the Dynamo are focusing their efforts on Clark, who was released by Eintracht Frankfurt last week after finishing the season on loan at Stabaek in Norway.

Some people speculate that we were trying to do that with Mellberg - giving him DP this year, and then not next year, allowing us to keep Hassli even if Kouvs comes back. But the league nixed the deal. Preferential treatment if you ask me. We don't know for a fact that this is true of course, but even the idea that the league has the ability to pull a move like that has turned me off more on the MLS and TFC than anything else since I started following this league.

Because Clark left MLS on a free transfer, Houston maintained his MLS rights, so he was not subjected to the league's allocation order upon his return. And because Clark's contract with Eintracht Frankfurt was terminated as of July 31 and he was a free agent, he was allowed to sign with the team outside of the transfer window.

Good on him, I hope it works out. He's been without a club for a while.
He's just training with VWFC:

Nana Attakora, the ex-Toronto FC centre back and Canadian international, trained with the first team in front of a few hundred fans at Swangard Stadium, but head coach Martin Rennie was quick to pour cold water on his club potentially signing the 23-year-old.

“He’s doing fine – he’s just here training for a few days,” head coach Martin Rennie told Goal.com. “I think he’s probably going to go and play in Europe, so we’re just letting him train and get fit.”

Attakora has been out of contract since 2011 after failing to agree a deal with the San Jose Earthquakes, but that club still owns his MLS rights. Rennie was quick to point out that fact when pressed on whether his team would be interested in making a move for the player.

“We probably won’t because [San Jose] holds his rights,” Rennie said. “I don’t think it would be possible. I think they want to keep his rights.”

Apparently, Jacob Lensky is being considered by the Whitecaps:

One player with perhaps a better chance of eventually joining the ‘Caps is fellow Canadian Jacob Lensky, who continues to train in a bid to re-launch his professional soccer career.

The Vancouverite has been training off and on with the Whitecaps since walking away from his contract with Dutch side FC Utrecht around the New Year – the second contract he’s walked away from in his career – and has shown positive signs, according to Rennie.

“We like having him here,” Rennie said. “He’s a good player. He’s just getting back fit and healthy again. Obviously, if he does well he’d be someone we’d be interested in. He’ll play a little bit in the reserve game tomorrow and we’ll help him along the way. I think it’ll take him a while to get back to full fitness, but he’s a good player when he’s at full fitness.”

Paul Robinson set for Toronto move?

MLS side Toronto FC have opened up talks with former Bolton Wanderers (http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/bolton-wanderers/) full-back Paul Robinson (http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/people/paul-robinson/), according to reports.

Robinson was released by the Trotters following their relegation from the Premier League last season having spent the end of the campaign on loan at Leeds United (http://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/leeds-united/).

However, Leeds were quick to rule themselves out of the running for the 33-year-old, despite the left-back making 10 appearances for them last season.

Now, Robinson could be tempted to leave English football for the first time to join the likes of Torsten Frings at Toronto.

Robinson joined Bolton in 2010 after a successful loan spell at the club, going on to make 67 appearances in his two years at the club.

Looks like Red Bull NY is at it again. They have former Leeds United winger Lloyd Sam on trial this week:

One thing that is known is New York could soon add English flanker Lloyd Sam. The 27-year-old free agent, who last played for Notts County on loan from Leeds United, had his first training session with the Red Bulls on Monday, and he is expected to get at least a week-long trial before a decision is made on whether or not to acquire him.

“We know him from earlier,” Solér said. “We know he has qualities but we haven’t seen him for the last year, so it’s hard to see if he’s become better or worse. We know he has qualities, very good one-on-one, good left foot, good vision. He has some assets but we have to see if the assets fit what we look for.”

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/11/08/caps-release-barbara-injury-issues-force-rennies-hand Etienne Barbara would be worth bringing into camp. Has speed, strength and skill, but spent most of last season injured, never really got a chance in Vancouver. (to anyone with site login, I'd do a database cleanup and cache dump before lockups start. Site's been flagging all day.)

I think he's on like 90k salary, but takes up an international spot though

Yeah, agreed. Good players. Gaudette as well, and Angulo had promise.

Yeah, agreed. Good players. Gaudette as well, and Angulo had promise.

I think Solli is worth a look, but there was a big concern among NYRB supporters that Tainio is injury prone, and has lost a lot of step last year.

Wow, I'm suprised he is ONLY 34.

He would have been a team mate with Nesta when Lazio won the Scudetto.

Not sure how many years he has left in the tank. Did play 19 games for Inter last season.

DC United releases Montenegran international M Branko Boskovic, 32. He was originally a DP for DC, but signed a non DP contract in June. Had 1 goal and 7 assists this year, but asked to be released for 'family reasons'. Probably pissed not getting enough play time under Olsen.
