This is great stuff. I mean it would be if I could read Swedish...

FC Toronto har samma ägare som det framgångsrika hockeylaget Toronto Meaple Leafs där Mats Sundin hade sin storhetstid samt basketlaget Toronto Raptors

I hope the players don't expect Mats to be following the reds to Orlando...

(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BK_H%C3%A4cken )

Bollklubben Häcken, also known simply as BK Häcken, are a Swedish professional football club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football) based in Gothenburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothenburg). The club are affiliated to Göteborgs Fotbollförbund (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6teborgs_Fotbollf%C3%B6rbund) and play their home games at Rambergsvallen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambergsvallen). The club colours, reflected in their crest and kit, are yellow and black. Formed on 2 August 1940 the club have played eleven season in Sweden's highest football league Allsvenskan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allsvenskan), the club's first season in the league was in 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Allsvenskan). The club are currently playing in Allsvenskan, where the season lasts from April to October.

The beginning

The club was started by a group of youngsters at the age of 14–15, they had a wish to not just play football for fun but to create an organisation and play in the national league system. The boys turned to Göteborgs Fotbollförbund (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6teborgs_Fotbollf%C3%B6rbund), the local FA, the boys had been playing under the name BK Kvick earlier, however the name was already taken by another organisation, the name was then change to Bollklubben Häcken after the huge hedge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedge) that grow around the field the boys used to practise on. The organisation Bollklubben Häcken came into existence on 2 August 1940.

First decades

Following the first years the club only played sporadic matches, youth championships and a few other matches, but eventually they started to play at the senior level. As of 1943 the club started to take in the league system and success came in an instant. Between 1944 and 1947 the club won their league and climbed from west seniorclass 4 to seniorclass 1.

The start of the 1950s went as well as the 1940s had. The club won Division 4 in 1950 and when they won Division 3 in 1951 they went from a local club to be known as a "comet team" in the national media. The club fought for a place in Allsvenskan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allsvenskan) in 1953 but saw themselves defeated by Kalmar FF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_FF), and in 1954 the club was relegated from Division 2. In 1955 the club set the record for the most spectators during a Division 3 game against IK Oddevold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IK_Oddevold), when 18,229 people showed up for the game. BK Häcken eventually won the league but returns soon again[clarification needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)] and played in Division 3 for the rest of the decade.

The 1960s started with the opening of the club's new clubhouse, now known as Häckensborg. Häcken spent most of the decade as a stable Division 3 team, but in 1967 they were relegated to Division 4 and it was struck by some severe economical and internal problems.

The 1970s started just as badly as the previous decade ended. The club fell out of Division 4 and held discussions with IF Warta about a merger. A discussion had been up several times earlier but had not gone as far as now, at the day of the voting the IF Warta members voted for a merging while the BK Häcken members voted against it.

In 1971 the club won Division 5, the club then played in Division 4 until 1975 when they won it and in 1977 they won Division 3 with former Swedish international Agne Simonsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Agne_Simonsen&action=edit&redlink=1) as manager, when the club earlier won Division 3 in 1951 they climbed directly up to Division 2, however this time they had to play a qualifier against IK Brage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IK_Brage), Motala AIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motala_AIF) and Degerfors IF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degerfors_IF). The club won and took the step up to Division 2. During 1978–1979 the club played successfully in Division 2 with a 3rd place as the best position. In 1978 BK Häcken also started a ladies team.

Reaching Allsvenskan

The new decade started as strong as the last one ended, Agne Simonsen continues to bring success to the club as they win Division 2 and qualify for a position in Allsvenskan, however IF Elfsborg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IF_Elfsborg) prove to strong with a 0–1 defeat at home on Gamla Ullevi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamla_Ullevi_%281916%29) and then a 1–1 result in Borås (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bor%C3%A5s) on Ryavallen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryavallen), during the game on Gamla Ullevi BK Häcken sets it record for biggest home audience with 19 205. However the club is not let down by this and comes in 2nd place in 1982 and this time they qualify IFK Norrköping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFK_Norrk%C3%B6ping), BK Häcken is able to 2–0 result home at Rambergsvallen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambergsvallen) and then get 1–1 away on Idrottsparken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idrottsparken) in Norrköping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norrk%C3%B6ping) and the club reached Allsvenskan for the first time in the clubs history.

The time that BK Häcken spends in Allsvenskan is however short, the club successful manager Agne Simonsen for a local competitor and Reine Almqvist takes over, the club ends up last in the league and is relegated back to Division 2 where they play for the rest of the 1980s.
BK Häcken starts the 1990s with winning Division 1 söder and faces GIF Sundsvall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF_Sundsvall) in the qualify, even with an impressiv 5–2 victory at home Sundsvall is able to come back and win the return match in Sundsvall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sundsvall) and gets promoted to Allsvenskan. The club was also successful plying in Svenska Cupen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svenska_Cupen) and reaches the final, but are defeated again, this time 3–0 by Djurgårdens IF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djurg%C3%A5rdens_IF_Fotboll).

The club is close in reaching Allsvenskan again in 1991, but a 2–2 home and 1–1 away sees them losing the position to Helsingborgs IF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsingborgs_IF). 1992 is more successful as they reach Allsvenskan through a 4th place in Kvalsvenskan and this time the spell in the top league is not as short as earlier, BK Häcken ends up on in 6th place in 1993 and gets to play a second year in Allsvenskan, however the club ends up last in the league in 1994 and following some turbulens on the leadership side of the club it stays in Division 1 until 1997 as the club ended up in 2nd place and qualifies against Västerås SK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4ster%C3%A5s_SK_Fotboll), with a 1–1 home and with a 4–2 away BK Häcken climbs up to Allsvenskan again.

The club is however relegated again in 1998 after ending up second last, but returns in 1999 after winning Division 1 Södra, this year Kim Källström (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_K%C3%A4llstr%C3%B6m) also makes his debut for the club.

New millennium

The new millennium continues as the last decade did, the club is able to defend its Allsvenska position in a relegation/promotion play-off against Mjällby AIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mj%C3%A4llby_AIF) in the end of the 2000 season (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_in_Swedish_football) after penalties, Kjell Pettersson leaves the club and Torbjörn Nilsson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torbj%C3%B6rn_Nilsson) takes over as manager. 2001 BK Häcken plays it 6 season overall in Allsvenskan but ends second last and is relegated to Superettan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superettan), through a cooperation with Floda BoIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floda_BoIF) future Liberian national Dulee Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulee_Johnson) arrives at the club and in 2002 and he gets company from Jimmy Dixon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Dixon) and Dioh Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dioh_Williams).

BK Häcken spends stays in Superettan until 2004, being close to take the step up both in 2002, failing on goal difference, and in 2003, defeated by GIF Sundsvall in play-off, in 2004 the clubs reaches Allsvenskan by winning Superettan. The club brings in former Swedish international Teddy Lučić (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Lu%C4%8Di%C4%87) and Danish international Stig Tøfting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stig_T%C3%B8fting) in 2005 in an attempt to reach a higher position the earlier, the club reaches 8th places.

The 2006 season gets harder as Stig Tøfting and Dulee Johnson leaves the club and the club is forced to play against a qualify against IF Brommapojkarna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IF_Brommapojkarna), BK Häcken is defeated by a total of 4–1 and is relegated to Superettan.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BK_H%C3%A4cken#cite_note-0)

In 2010, Häcken earned the Fair Play award for the Allsvenskan. This resulted in the team earning a spot in the 1st Qualifying Round of the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011%E2%80%9312_UEFA_Europa_League) when Sweden won third place in the UEFA Fair Play ranking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Fair_Play_ranking).

EDIT this won't work, there is a sub system now that will let you do this... the free version lets you play with office, but not IE

this may not be a long term fix, but Onlive Desktop for the iPad will run a windows Virtual machine on your iPad, which should get around that.

It's free right now, but you have to sign up on onlive's website. It won't be free for ever I suspect, but for today it will solve the issue.

I don't know if there is an Android app.

Maybe because it's Flash? Is your tablet an iPad, or Android?

During the Orlando game, Paul Beirne tweeted about watching it on an iPad, using a program that can handle specific Flash video. If you go back in his Twitter stream to Saturday, you should find the info.

If you're using Android, I don't have a clue.

great line up

immediate change to defense line to have Harden (given Caceido didn't fare well) trying with Aceval (who was relative solid)

good change to midfield Stinson (average) for Avila (average) and Silva for Dunfield (god awful...).

good to see Johnson(fresh from national team success) for Plata (who was not effective but midfield has lot to do with it)

The Hacken guy are stepping up aggressively on every pass. Not only are most of the TFC passes a bit off & not crisp -- the receiving players have to finally realize that if they wait for the ball or step back, the Swedish players are going to intercept the ball every time.

Crappy first few minutes, better play towards the end. I'm going to save judgement on Lambe until he has a few games under his belt .. it might be nervousness but he hasn't impressed me at all, negative performance so far. Liking what I see from Silva, can't wait to see what he can do with some more confidence.

02-28-2012, 06:55 PM
Very positive stuff. Our fullbacks are getting forward. I like Frings in the back because he touches the ball a lot more. When tracking back our line is held really well. The use of the wings are improving with the fullback overlapping. Counter attack looks good.

I'd like to see Stinson show more to the defense though and Lambe....well Lambe is the only thing I didn't like this half. To keep it positive Lambe can run well.

I'm excited to see how we do against an MLS squad though. We always seem to do well against South American and European squads.

Kaz
02-28-2012, 06:55 PM
Can we sit Reggie and stick Plata back in? I don't know if the staff think he's got an unfair advantage in speed and put led in Lambe's boots, but he seems to be a little slow.

Johnson taking a beating out there, good to get revenge with a goal. Also good to see they can fashion a goal w/o Koevermans, who's been a bit weak so far (and aggressively marked).

Let's see if Winter can say the right things in the dressing room. Can they come out the same or stronger? Or will it be a slow start after the half as well?

I'm wondering if the Lambe is almost done. I saw Soolsma warming up.

Too much airball (Preki-style, almost) meant we had no possession at the start, but as soon as we began playing on the ground like we should, the chances started to pop up.

I'm still most impressed with Morgan and his development. He's making a case that he is the guy for that position this year. His confidence is growing and he's making good decisions.

I also feel once Johnson finds his place in the formation he is going to come on strong this year. At times he looks like he's not 100% sure on when and where he should be moving. Hopefully that will come soon.

Looked to have settled well there.
As for the formation with Frings playing that far back, it looks exactly like a "formation geek" feature on Luis Enrique's 4-3-3 AS Roma that Krisian Jack did a few weeks ago. Replace Frings with deRossi and it seems he's explaining our system to a t:

But yeah.. some great combinations were put together, mostly on the counter attack it seemed. We really need to work on pass accuracy though, it still feels slightly lucky when somebody doesn't have to stretch for a ball.

Also.. Frings defending again? Can somebody explain...

Somebody has to defend. The coaching staff obviously feel that he is needed back there. How that reflects on their opinion of how the CB's are playing is obvious. The CB's are really going to have to really pull up their socks if they are going to do what we need them to do.

I think we have to get ready for a shit ton of reds, yellow-reds, supplementary discipline, etc. in the new MLS season. Refs were told to crack down on dangerous tackles -- and seeing how weak the refs are, many will overreact (although the idea is good).

On the replay, it was so obvious that Maund was standing outside of the penalty area on the non-foul that was called a penalty.

it was more a 3-2-2-2-1 or 3-4-2-1 or 3-3-3-1

It was fluid to allow for 5 to defend, and then have the two wing backs quickly move up for the attack.

mowe
02-28-2012, 08:36 PM
It wasn't exactly a 5-4-1, Ecks and Morgan were a big part of the attack who fell back when Hacken was attacking. Frings was playing the sweeper role that he did a few times last year.

Either way it's good that Winter experiments with formations, it's worked for us.

It's normally the naturally defensive variant of the 4-3-3 we play. But all you have to do to make it defensive is drop the wide forwards back to mid and two of the central mids into a deeper holding role. That's why the 4-3-3 is a good system around which to base prescribed tactical movement, because even when you're caught, technically two-way players can use it as a defensive system as well an offensive one.

It was a 3-4-3. Frings moved into the backline, Ecks and Morgan were pressing up with Stinson and Silva in the middle. I think it worked well. Definitely shifted the play. I think we'll see it more against 4-4-2 teams.

jloome
02-28-2012, 08:55 PM
Coaches deserve credit for getting it to work. First 25 minutes were shoddy, but once Frings got room to come up a little more it started to work quite well.

Lambe was invisible. I suspect he lacks confidence, but he might just not be good enough. Not sure I agree with Paul Mariner's fascination with the talent in Bermuda, which is tiny.

"Anyone else notice how much more often Eckersley was overlapping? That three-man back gives him some confidence, apparently."

It's a numbers game. If you have two strikers you really only need 3 people back to be sure you have sufficient coverage. That's what they were playing. Frings dropped back and Ecks and Morgan were given the green light to go forward. Made a huge difference to the attack and our midfield possesson. The problem with a four man backline against 2 strikers is if the full backs go up, you're now in a 2 on 2 position. If they hold back, you're 4 on 2 which is a waste of personnel.

Ajax TFC
02-28-2012, 09:35 PM
If we're going to go with a three man back line I'd rather rotate Frings, Stinson Eckersley and Harden. Move Frings into central midfield with Silva/Avila, move Stinson to right wingback, move Harden to sweeper and move Eckersley to right center back
for example:
Johnson - Koevermans - Plata
Morgan - Silva - Frings - Stinson
Aceval - Harden - Eckersley

Both Aceval and Eckersley have the ability to play centerback and fullback so I think they're both well suited to playing as wide centerbacks. Harden played as a sweeper a couple times last year and did pretty well. Central midfield is a demanding role that requires quick thinking, good vision, and good ball control, whereas the outside is a bit less demanding. I think Stinson should play on the wing for now as he develops. Frings can move into the midfield where he'll have the most influence, because honestly our central midfield is usually rather pedestrian in the buildup when Frings is playing in the back

Thanks for correcting the terminology. :D Yes there's too many of those in MLS. Good that they're trying to do something about it -- too many brutal fouls causing serious injury last season.

But also too many blind refs. Who's the nutcase ref who pulls out the red card even for some non-fouls? Holy Toledo? Guys like him will crack down in a random manner. It will be him & the two goalies on the field by the end of the match.

He was always a pretty active overlapper .... to a fault actually. For me, his main flaw is getting caught too far up-field too often and then exhausting himself getting back into position ... and then often over-running his mark due really to trying too hard.

His exuberance is welcome though and he has a fine touch and a great pass.

I only saw part of today's match but if he was doing it more often than in the past, it would have been because he was told to.

I don't think he's ever lacked for confidence.
