Loved the quote from Thomas Rongen:

Thomas Rongen on his first week of training with TFC: I’ve been a head coach for four MLS teams and (TFC) are probably right now the most professional … They conduct themselves on a very high level and I was very impressed with the media day. They use all their resources and the club has great aspirations. It’s a club that’s spending money in departments where it needs to be spent.

While it is definitely interesting, we have to take it with a grain of salt since he hasn't coached an MLS team since 2005.

^ MLS 1.0 was a bit of a joke compared to today.

Eckersley's comments on the quality of the team I take much more seriously.

This Le Toux stuff is off the hook. Did PUFC hire MoJo as their Dir of Player Operations and not tell anyone? Le Toux says he was pushed to do the Bolton trial, didn't want to do it and when he came back early, the FO was pissed off. They wanted to sell him for $$ and allocation money.

Of course Nowak and the Philly FO aren't responding to this, and probably shouldn't, since they are likely to make things worse.

It's more of a news round up, like the Kick Off column on mlssoccer.com.

That's unreal. Some really stupid stuff happens in this industry.

Le Toux's situation shows you why you need an agent.

That was the other stunning revelation. I'm sure its about saving the skim that an agent gets, but the idea of an international professional athlete without an agent just boggles my mind. Not sure that a big wheel like Motzkin would prevent Le Toux's situation but I bet teams think twice about the ramifications if an agent with wide representation is involved.

Here's the full article:

now, some people are criticizing the article for not getting a response from PU FO, so take it as one side's story.

Unless you're a skilled negotiator/smart business man, every athlete should have an agent.

In Le Toux's case he says he didn't care, but you should retain someone to take care of the paperwork/details that need to be taken care of.

I think that PU took advantage of his situation because he had no one to "fight" for him.

You all know my position on this sort of thing. I don't trust sports team management or owners. I know them, and they'd screw every player in the lockerroom if they could.

As for the agent issue, I don't believe you need just an agent, you need a GOOD agent. And you need a team behind that agent. Everything from marketing and PR to legal and administation. It's the biggest mistake footballers make these days. It's incredible how much further ahead hockey players are. If you're headed into the big leagues, representation is probably among the best in the world.

larger agents have more of a union mentality behind them, and thus command more sway. if you represent a wide depth of players, and have a variety of contacts then teams tend to be more careful negotiating with them.

just like word spreads with players, i'd believe an agents have more influence with their clients when it comes to what they think of a particular league or team.

I agree.

But even hockey lags behind the baseball and football guys.

One of the best in the business, of course from a player's stand point LOL - Scott Boras.

Imagine the uproar in these parts if Mo Johnston had traded Danny Dichio out of Toronto prior to the start of year three. This is what Philly fans must be feeling with the Union trading Le Toux. Unless that team knows what it's doing - and it doesn't look like they are - they just shat the bed huge here.

An Eastern Exodus?: I dont know if we will make the playoffs in the 2012 year, but we definitely have a solid team now on paper, which definitely will be an improvement from the past 3 seasons.

The teams that made the playoffs so far have added midfield depth and forward depth by signing veteran MLS players or experienced internationals.

TFC and the teams with negative goals differences have gone and signed defenders to stop the goal fest in their own net. DC United this offseason went out and got two centre backs in Robbie Russell and Emiliano Duder.

It will definitely be a more competitive Eastern Conference than last season if the defenses have been improved and some mid-table teams have lost key attacking players.

Top Teams: NYRB and Sporting K.C.

On The Bubble(up/down): Culo Crew, Houston Dynamo, Chicago Fire, Philadelphia Union

Most Improved Teams: DC United and Toronto FC

Likely Bottom Teams: Montreal Impact, New England Revolution

Not to derail the thread but SI went back and looked at the book that Boras did for A-Rod (which is now in the Hall of Fame) and compared it to his stats and found out that Boras was pretty bang on.

Just an example if you have a good agent he can do a lot for your career.

After Mondrigan left Philly, i wouldn't be surprised if we sold Stephan to them.

Le Toux and Hassli together up front. French(speaking) and Deadly...the Limpactois must be TRES JEALOUS

The next 5-6 years of his career weren't really tough to predict, but Boras was pretty bold on predicting that A-Rod wouldnt really declining much until his late 30's/40s (when he did A-Rods contract with the yanks a few years ago). In reality he's already starting to break down. In a few years Boras' projections won't look so good. But ya, it's a slick way to market a player.
