A lot of people said Beckham was irrelevant and who cares if he comes back?

Now "everyone" is excited.

Someone please help me here. If he's a great player, I'd rather we not have to play against him. If he's lost a step, who cares?

I think it is always fun to watch the big names in person and Becks has an appeal beyond the game so a certain number of the population will be excited to go regardless of where you think his skill set is at currently.

Ok, stepping out of partisan concerns for a moment. We've just seen Beckham have the opportunity to play in Europe at top wages and turn it down to continue his time in LA. I am certain that will not go unnoticed among many top players. I'm not saying that Messi is going to drop what he is doing to play for San Jose. But it does say that DB likes it here, likes the league and his celebrity family likes it here. That is bound to create some positive vibe for MLS. If that helps other MLS teams get a hearing from top agents and top talent, even better.

That having been said, I say let's build a bonfire and put LA on the top...

detroit: it's not the MLS he wanted to stay in, it's LA. i doubt that you'll find a whole lot of star players willing to make the jump to an area that isn't NY/LA, those are huge markets for players to immerse themselves in. anyways, anyone else think he's going to be moving into a management role with them after his contracts up with LA?

Fort York Redcoat

I'm pretty confident this was the best option for Becks but was not by any means his first choice. He would've rather win every year he was here and meet his old clubs in the WCC while making MLS at least the 3rd most watched sport behind NFL and MLB in the USA.

Instead he had enough success here to keep fans here watching and created enough new fans to make a startling number of new fans.

I'd think if it were up to David alone he'd finish at United or a spell at Spurs. PSG made sense for him. A new country for the Beckham Experiment and Posh shopping but I actually believe THIS time he stayed for the kids (and BrandPosh won't work in gai Paris). He's whole hog MLS now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Team Becks enter MLS soon and we'll see a new phase du Beckham.

Beating LA out of the CCL, if it works out that way, will be that much sweeter and we don't have to hear that TFC only did it because Beckham left and shattered their team as a result. Bring it on....we can take him on. Maybe he will bow out due to the turf field. He was against playing on it when we had it at BMO :)

It depends on the configuration. Your figure is incorrect, by the way.

52,000 is the CFL configuration with the extra seats. No way will it pay to get out the extra seats at these prices.

ML$E is using the same configuration as Juventus used for their friendly. That is 46,000 seats. So 46,000 is a sellout with the Juventus configuration. They said all along that their figure was contingent on using that seating arrangement.

I don't see why you have to find conspiracy stories in all of this or criticize others. The Skydome can actually have over 60k for pro wrestling, but only 49k for baseball, or 46,000 for soccer without using the extra seating.

The Skydome hasn't ripped out any seats since it was built. At least I haven't heard. Or any significant amount. In the past 23 years since its opening its been struggling to get sell outs to events, most notably for baseball. Hence they lowered the capacity for the EVENT. The stadium still holds ~50,000 for baseball and ~52,000 for football (CFL and soccer). So how do they do this? They drape sections off. So in theory the event could be sold out but the stadium still has more seats to sell. It's great form a marketing perspective because you limit your sell-out point, while still having thousands of seats being empty.
Back 6-8 years ago they had a couple of soccer games that sold just north of 50,000. There were no extra seats added. So I don't know what this limited 46,000 arrangement you speak of other than sections being draped off. They used it to drum up tickets sales for marketing. The only addition of seats that goes on for football (any kind) is when the NFL comes to town. The Skydome is not cache like it was once before, so they have to think of different ways to "sell-out" the event.

All I am saying if demand is there, there is nothing stopping them to sell tickets to get over 50,000. There is practically nothing to set up for 50,000+ seats. Now to get over 52,000 there would be from what I understand.

Shakes McQueen
01-22-2012, 02:07 AM
They drape sections off at Argos games. They don't drape sections off at Jays games.

They haven't torn out seats at the Dome - they do, however, have retractable sections of seats in the lower bowl to accommodate wider or longer fields of play (such as the seats they retract to accommodate a long CFL field, or a wide soccer pitch).

Your argument has no merit. As Waggy pointed out - they are going with the Juventus soccer configuration, which is around 46k seats. If they sell out of those tickets, it's definitionally a sellout.

About 10 years ago they did indeed drape off seats for Jay games. Now I know they lost 6,7 hundred seats for baseball from their high of 50,000+ for whatever reason. I think it was something to do with club sets or whatnot. But that not the issue as it only reps about 1% of all tickets.

I'm not disputing they are going with the Juve configuration. Not in the least. This simply means sections will be closed off. What I am saying is that a full soccer configuration is 50,000+. Now if they wish not to put that full compliment up for sale that's up to them. Doesn't mean they are not available if demand is there. For example, the other day MLSE just happened to find another 1,000 tickets to release for this game bringing the event (not stadium) up to 46,000. Now I'm pretty sure they didn't get some worker bees building bleachers, scaffold/seats to put on sale to get that 1,000. They were always there, just as the remaining 5-6,000 is. They are simply not choosing to sell them in order to drive up sales for a whole host of reasons. Now, if the game happens to sell 46,000 tickets by ~mid-Feb, you bet your ass another allotment of tickets will be made available for sale - and not by physically adding 1 single seat.

If you want to go with the event being sold out at 46,000. Go for it. But the stadium for this configuration is not. There is a distinction there. I make it because I read in other threads that people would fear a bad atmosphere if only 30,000 tickets sold, or even 40,000. Argo tickets are set around 40,000 for a sellout. It doesn't mean the dome is sold out. And it gives the feeling of a not full kinda cavernous stadium. If 46,000 tickets are sold for the March 7 that would be great and an awesome atmosphere could be had. But to make the atmosphere even better (with other factors being equal) would be a complete sellout of 50,000 (which could physically happen). I've been in the dome with 20,000, 30,000, 45,000 and 50,000+. With 45,000 people the atmosphere was great, but it doesn't even compare to having 50,000.

The listed capacity for the CFL at Rogers Centre is 52, 230, which is the same for soccer. They have only put in extra seats for the Bills games in this configuration. The Argonauts have played around with their capacity in the past as they currently do not sell the 500 level during the regular season. The lower bowl for the Argos is just over 31,000.

The 45,000 number would mean they might not be selling the last couple sections of the 500 level in the north end like they do for baseball most of the time.

Here are the configuration for the Man U game and the Juventus game, they are both the same except that they did not sell the 500 level for the Juventus game.

Good find. Obviously the same configuration, except that a "sellout" for Juve would have been 31,000 seats.

To get to 52,000 seats you need the extra seats put in for the Bills games. The Argos don't sell enough seats to make putting in those extra seats worth-while, so while capacity is 52k for gridiron, you'll never see it for a regular season Argos game. TFC might be able to sell those extra seats, but not at a high enough price to make it worth their while.

So in accepting 46,000 as a "sellout," we're not being marketing tools, we're just recognizing that ML$E has not chosen to purchase putting out the extra seats, and 46,000 is all that there is going to be.

BTW, the place is going to be rocking! Yes, we'll probably see some people in the upper decks doing the "wave", but a whole new bunch of people are going to be introduced to TFC footy. If 5k of them become permanent fans, that will be a good thing.

Actually the extra seating in the end zone for the Bills games would not fit for CFL with the longer field and end zone. The 2007 Grey Cup had 52,230 and in 1989 they actually had more with 54,088.
Actually for Bills Redskins game last year they did not put the extra seating in the north end zone like they have in the past.

Now some of tricks that have been done in the past to boost attendence is to literally count everyone in the stadium, all staff, media etc.

When the seats are moved into football mode the opening for the baseball dugouts gives extra space on each sideline and this is where they have the sideline lounges in addition to one in the south end zone. As there will be a lot more space in the south end between the end line and seats I could see TFC having some sort of on-field hospitality.

In the past as you can see in the link below the Argos have blocked out the seats in the north end zone using drapes.

Purchase what?? The seats are there. They don't go anywhere nor are they pulled out or put back in. They are simply roped off. Draped over with a banner more precisely. There is not anything to buy. Simply open it up if demand warrants. During the good days of Ciinimon and his buddy the Argos had 2 or 3 games a year in the up 40,000's. They didn't buy anything. They just opened up a section. From day one there has always been more seats for football/soccer configuration than the baseball configuration. And the current baseball config is over 49,000.
Any additional seats that are constructed or what not is as what CBlake says. It pretty much only done for the NFL in this same configuration.

Capacity without even putting chairs near the pitch is ~52,000.
Ways to go for sellout. Others may however wish to abide by and buy the marketing job of TFC that 45,000 is a sellout.

Seriously? I swear to the man above - They could get 50k at the match, we could win 3-0 but if someone spills a drop of beer there will be a group of 'supporters' crying about what a shite event it was.

"Sellout" or not, getting anythying remotely close to 40k for a soccer game in Toronto is fantastic news for the city, the club and the sport.

The less attendance was because of the reno's Rogers did inside. Removed a few rows of seating from the 100 level from my understanding.

Some sections are unwatchable in terms of sitting in the 100 level in the football/soccer config as well.

I notice that the actual Rogers Centre website lists the capacity for football at 45,746 (not including Luxury Suite seats). I wonder how many people fit in those suites at maximum -- they have two levels of those ringing the stadium.

Which games were those?

Never heard of the Dome ever getting anything close to 50,000 for soccer.

I'm positive whatever TFC gets attendance wise will break the previous soccer record.

EDIT: Or maybe it was Celtic/Roma. Either way, I know one of those games broke 50,000.

Ah I see.

They have Celtic-Roma at 50,158 in 2004.

Though it must have been a typical late coming crowd.

Shit video, but at 7:57pm the stadium doesn't look full.

It was Celtic/Roma. The Liverpool game got 35k but it was a late add on and they didn't have the same amount of time to promote it.

Yes. They removed several rows of seats at the back of the 100 level to make the concourse bigger. It was a definite improvement.

It broke the Toronto record of about 45k set by the Blizzard v Juventus back in 1982 shortly after Italy won the WC. That Juve squad was probably the most talented club team to ever play in Toronto. Boniek, Platini, Zoff, Rossi, Cabrini, Gentili, Tardelli, Bonini and Bettega (though he was out injured).

No goals scored but Charlie Falzon hit the post for the Blizzard on a 30 yarder.

Fun times. :)

I believe that is where the reduction in baseball attendance slips to just over 49,000. That still leaves more than enough seats over the 50,000 for soccer/football.

I remember hearing about that match was that the one in '83?

AC Milan brought a pretty good team in the early '90s when they played a friendly against Benfica at Varsity (a game that was originally slated for Exhibition Stadium). Guys on the pitch that day included Baresi, Maldini, van Basten, Rijkaard, Costacurta, Donadoni, Ricardo Gomes, Paulo Sousa, etc.

June 11, 1991

AC Milan was in the middle of their European Cup successes, they had won before and after that season and would go on to win the next 3 Serie A titles in a row.

And Benfica was a season removed from a European Cup appearance.

I remember the Ajax one (didn't go but remember seeing stuff about on the TV) and that's when I started following Ajax.
