A friend of mine is from Blackburn, she sent me this message this morning

"You know how Blackburn Rovers are doing really bad? Fans protested and i just saw someone with a banner on the news saying Canada say Keane out wtf?"

If that's re the CCL match, that's fucking AWESOME. Anyone got another explanation?

Also SSG BANGING body but.... http://youtu.be/2DjMqN7VmGM?t=34s

edit: damnit, the manager of blackburn is Steve Keane. Too bad. Got all excited for a min there

^ Strange way to end it. I read it as: "we had too much internet traffic so we had to shut down".

Edit: That's funny they can't get enough click revenue to cover the cost of the views. I had no idea that sort of thing could become so much of a problem. It's not like they were pushing anything heavy across, just basic stuff.

AG: ive seen the problem many a time with sites ive made (but not run).

you have a site that catters a niche market that already know where to go for specific products you're advertising. in this case they break minor stories, i say because i don't recall them doing anything groundbreaking, which results in multiple visits from the same users.

say they have the same merch sponsor. if people get merch elsewhere, they ain't clicking the link. if they buy merch from the sponsor, they normally know the direct URL, which means it doesn't register that someone had gone through MLSR to get there. one of the biggest ways i've found to subsidize the bandwidth you're paying for and lose is to sell your own merch (from a few webcomic sites i've set up), tshirts and stuff of your characters.

many of these sites being run aren't making a whole lot of money after the bandwidth they pay for. when you divide that by the amount of time they spend working on the site, they make peanuts. i wasn't a fan of the writing, but i'm guilty of viewing MLSR on and off again.

they should probably just stick to breaking stories on twitter or a tumblr or something. oh well.

also, afternoon D! something wrong with your keyboard? "Today,s News,Friday,Dec.23" ;)

also: i'd like to point out that they really dropped the ball on revenue. many a site has gone down as a result of this, companies too. they grow too big, too fast. take a look at american apparel growing without having a stable business model. you have people that are writers and designers without actually knowing anything about economics. they said they were backed up 2 months, but how could you not see that coming? how could you not anticipate that you would get an influx of visitors on a rumour site.. PRIOR TO A TRANSFER WINDOW OPENING!? they stated they had their next backup due in january, and that being locked out of the site before this could occur led to their demise, but why not schedule a backup before one of the most traffic heavy periods of your year? in addition to that, why not secure ad revenue prior to that under the guise that the percentage of people visiting your site increases exponentially? it's a niche market, but aside from the MLS subsite, they've cornered the market. i'm sure you could make a good chunk of change going "look, we're the only other website that caters to a huge market, we're worth investing in!"

unfortunately it really gets my goat having designed and run a few pages myself. i remember i created a site for a guy who did comics, he was astounded that people weren't clicking his ads for other webcomics he chose to promote and that he was losing money. when i pointed out that most people either knew about the comics he was promoting, or would simply view the other comic and bookmark it, he claimed ignorance to not knowing how these things were run. when i asked him "well, when you see a comic you like, do you go back to the old site and keep clicking the link, or do you memorize the URL?" he gave me this look like "oh shit, yeah, i never thought about that.."

like i said it grew, too fast, too soon and no one knew how to interpret the signs. "if"s, "and"s, and "could have been"s i guess.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting that.

So hypothetically, they could always move to some 3rd party hosting service that takes their click revenue but covers the cost of their bandwidth?

Unfortunately RPB is now going to go bankrupt & shut down this site due to the bandwidth usage you've caused in this thread... :D

As someone running an indie news site right now, I find the idea that someone could have too much traffic absolutely absurd. There are so many ways to turn page views into revenue that this is beyond the pale dumb.
