I'm torn on Beckham. Being honest I know how much attention (attendance, players and $$$) he's brought to this league but I know I'm not alone in thinking that he took some of that attention away from the league with his own reputation and fanfare. In a way I look forward to the league without him to see how many fans he made of the league.

I wish him luck in France or wherever he ends up. Happy shopping, Posh.

It really has been a mixed bag when it comes to Beckham. He was the first DP, and having a player who was still playing on a top MNT did a lot to make MLS credible to players overseas, making a lot more of them willing to come. The league had it's profile raised greatly and it's image changed from a bargain-basement league to a lower than top but now credible league. Without Beckham, there would be no Thierry Henry or many other top players. So in that sense the experiment was a success.

OTOH he had little commitment to his team or his league. Beckham was "supposed" to be like Pele to the old NASL, someone who would have a massive impact and catapault MLS into a top league. That will probably eventually happen, but Beckham didn't accelerate things like he should have.

Also, until this last year, he was a major disappointment on the pitch. He really didn't make his team play better, but was rather a distraction to LA winning the big prize. This last year was a turnaround (I'm sure it coincides with Capello dropping him from the MNT squad), and he played last year like he should have played for all 5 years.

It all comes down to commitment. Pele gave his all for the Cosmos. Beckham seemed mostly interested in promoting "brand Beckham," so the results were mixed.

Well if Beckham bolts... seems LA may have a back up plan (rumour). Some other good tidbits about Houston and Montreal too.

I started to be somewhat impressed with Beckham when he came back from his complete Achilles tear, in the 2nd half of the 2010 MLS season, in excellent shape & playing well. But yeah, approx. 1.5 years out of his 5-year contract is a bit short.

Reading into Michael Ballack coming over, imagine him and Frings running our Mid!! Would only be possible if JDG left though.
