The only way I see it happening, is Montreal going on his reputation from before this year and the idea that he can return to that previous form, If he wasn't canadian I would agree with you, but I can see it happening, and who knows, it might be the right place for him.

I hope Montreal rather promote from their academy that choose Canadian players to just make up their quota.

Take Ching...if he retires, big deal, Houston can deal with it and you're depriving another team of a quality player. You could also trade him back to Houston for a first round pick or something.

I would. He has a 600k contract but he's only 22, high quality talent isn't up for grabs often. Worth taking a shot, he'll always have trade value in this league if he doesn't work out.

Montreal's coaching staff is very familiar with Adu because of their shared backround with the US national team program. I think they know what to expect if they select him.

I'd pick Freddy if I was Montreal...

At 22 he's either going to pack it in, give up and just cash his pay check until it runs out - or give it his all and rebrand himself into a solid player / top player etc...

Worth the risk IMO.

That's also true, but there were many marginal players in MLS in 2006 who wouldn't get a sniff today.

Houston supporters must be livid right now, and justifiably so. This is no way to see the career of a club legend end prematurely. If Houston wants him back, they'll have to give up assets. It's a no win situation for the Dynamo from a PR perspective.

Hopefully these expansion drafts will go away soon, but until they do, perhaps there should be an exemption for players with 10 (or so) years of MLS experience to reward players so they don't have to uproot and move their families in the twilight of their careers...

rocker
11-23-2011, 03:24 PM
I don't think Ching retires. All Houston needs to do is send Montreal a small allocation or something, and they've got them back, I bet. They can't hold Houston over the fire too much... but there's no way these gentlemen can't come to some agreement.

While I do feel bad for Ching, it's not like Houston can't have him back immediately. Pony up, boys. Show how much you care.

the draft is already confusing enough as it is. if you want a player you have to prove your loyalty to THEM and keep him.

If Houston wanted to keep him bad enough, they would have protected them. I don't fault Montreal at all in this case, and thats saying a lot for me to sympathize with them. What precedent would it set if players started doing that, would be unfair precedent, almost like giving clubs and extra protected spot.

Houston supporters must be livid right now, and justifiably so. This is no way to see the career of a club legend end prematurely. If Houston wants him back, they'll have to give up assets. It's a no win situation for the Dynamo from a PR perspective.

Leaving someone like Ching who is on a non-DP salary unprotected was asking for trouble. They should blame their FO.

Great draft by Jesse Marsch. A bit of gamble with Ching, and I question why Jeb Brovsky got selected, but Mtl picks up a lot of depth with couple of starters. Has two MLS quality and cheap players in Josh Gardner and Seth Sinovic at LB. Trading Riley for Justin Braun (who Marsch used to play with) and Gerson Mayen is a master stroke IMO.

Ching is still at 300k+ salary. from cap wise POV, it wouldn't have made much difference

Yohan

Also, picking up versatile Tyson Wahl for defence.

Will be interesting who Mtl will sign from overseas, but they have a lot of solid depth, esp in defence. Marsch did his homework

It's Houston's fault really for leaving him unprotected. They gambled that Montreal would stay away and they could protect another player. If Ching meant so much to the club he should have been protected.

Montreal had a great draft in my opinion. Two good young fullbacks in Valentin and Sinovic. Nyassi on the wings and Mapp and Collen Warner in the midfield. Also picked up Justin Braun who had 8 goals and 5 assists for Chivas last year. They have good depth in the back but need some help up front. Probably address that with the South American players they've scouted plus whatever they can get from Houston for Ching. Not to mention their DP signing (you know they're going to have one).

I agree.

Ching is huge in Houston (soccer-wise). Looks like Montreal is starting off just like Toronto did with the Kreis pick in 2006. Let's see if Houston step up like Salt Lake did. I bet they do unless Ching was serious about retirining. But if he feels he has a season or two left, then Montreal picked well and Houston will have to negotiate something reasonable.

Not a terrible draft by any means.

I never understood why people think you take the best 11 players available in this thing (unless you want to trade them for assets). Take the guys who can fill out the back end of the roster (with a few exceptions) and identify the players you need yourself through discovery.

Should be. The league is growing. Rosters are growing, more teams, more players available.

As I've said before, MLS' status as a High end Third Division/Low End Second division style league meant there was virtually no expansion dilution because MLS quality players are a dime a dozen in the world. It's just a matter of finding them and signing them.

League quality will continue to increase, even with the addition of a 20th club, until MLS is a true "Premier" Division.

It looks like there's some history between Jesse Marsch and Brian Ching...

http://www.chron.com/sports/dynamo/article/Despite-Ching-s-retirement-threat-Montreal-2284549.php

Even though Brian Ching vowed to retire if they selected him, the Montreal Impact chose the Dynamo's all-time leading scorer with the first pick in the 2011 expansion draft Wednesday.

"I have no comment on this at this time," Ching said.

A day before the draft, Ching promised to retire and work in the Dynamo's front office if the Impact chose him.

The Impact is coached by Jesse Marsch, one of the U.S. national team assistant coaches on Bob Bradley's staff when they decided to make Ching one of the last cuts from the team before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

To this day, Ching has said he'll never get over that snub, and now Marsch appears to have made the call that could send the Dynamo icon into retirement at least a year before the Hawaiian forward hoped.

LOL, social media at work. It started with Ives posting that Montreal "could be landing a pretty good goalkeeper". People on this board started speculating that it could be Frei, based solely on the fact that we have TWO pretty good goalkeepers. Someone posts that their friend saw Frei in Montreal (players are apparently not allowed to visit other cities in the off-season). Armen posts about these "rumours" on his twitter and we're off! Culminates in a reporter asking a TFC official about it, and getting the story denied of course.

Anyway, there's no way Houston would trade Hainault to get one of year Ching. And even if they did, Montreal wouldn't trade the hometown kid for a goalkeeper. Hey I'd love to get Hainault, but let's be realistic.

There are decent MLS keepers all over the league, they are a dime a dozen. Frei uses up an international slot, and he's not GA anymore.

Man that blew up in Houston's face! Henceforth that will be called the "Mo Johnston maneouvre".

Yes, AFAIK Mo was the first one to ever pull that stunt in MLS (who really shocked everyone with his chutzpah in doing it). Now that it's happened twice, I expect that no team will try that bluff again.

The real jerk move is trying to game the system by unprotecting a player who absolutely refuses to go to the picking team, then being at all upset when that team calls you on it and picks him anyway.

Good for Montreal.

If I remember correctly, he has a green card and of course his Swiss passport.

However, his 3 years playing for TFC have no bearing on his green card whatsoever. If he didn't have it before he came to Toronto, he wouldn't have been able to get it while here.
right. i feel like a moran for mixing up us and canadian immigration laws

Even tho it was Houston's FO that screwed up by not protecting him Houston's supporters have a real hate growing for Montreal.
They almost hate them as much as we do, if that's possible. :)

I think Montreal will get a lot more than allocation money for Ching.

In a standoff that looked a lot like this one, McBride cost Chicago Barrett (then a more valuable asset than he is now), plus a first round pick.

The real key is that Houston is a conference team. Meaning, Montreal did the smart thing not only calling Houston's bluff, but making a conference team decide whether to bring back their legendary (but hurting and aging) striker is worth helping a conference rival stronger.

It really puts Houston under the gun.

At the very worst, Montreal wasted a pick (something I am not sure hurts them too much), at the very best it hurts a conference rival and puts money or players in Montreal's pockets.

Kudos to Marsch.

yep. great move by Marsch. he could have used Ching pick on another depth player (and there were still a lot of good names on that list), but he's probably got more names lined up anyways

seems like joseph nane was protected by colorado because they had to protect 3 internationals and nyassi had his green card
