Kelly: MLS bending over backwards for Beckham

When your employer can’t give you a raise and also can’t afford to lose you, he woos you with titles.

On Wednesday, Major League Soccer curiously named David Beckham its Comeback Player of the Year.

The second-place finisher, D.C. United’s Charlie Davies, returned to the game this season after a 2009 auto accident in which his SUV was torn in half. Davies broke his leg, his elbow, his ribs, bones in his face, sliced open his bladder and suffered a brain injury.

Both Garber and Beckham always rubbed me thew wrong way... even more now.

^ Just a thought, could it simply be that Davies did not play in MLS last season? That would preclude him from "coming back", right?

Yeah Beckham's "Comeback" was nowhere near Davies'. I don't think a player should need to be out for a season just be injured during the season.

But I think Beckham still deserves this award because he's fully recovered from whatever his injury was whereas Charlie Davies clearly hasn't fully recovered from his brain injury....

....Unless he was an asshole before his accident.:dita:

Well, I don't know what the Comeback Player" rules are, if there are any.

But, I highly doubt that going from not playing because of massive injuries to scoring 11 goals, would preclude him. But who knows, with this league.

I expect Kelly's implications are spot on with this one.

was this award voted on by players?

I wouldn't give it to Charlie Davies simply because he's a diving cheat and a lot of his goals were penalty kicks. His play also fell off sharply at the end. I also don't think one should award it to the guy who had the worst comeback story. You pick three guys who made comebacks and then pick the best season. Otherwise we get into a "who had it worse" kind of debate ("Well, I was near death! I should win just because of that!")

The fact that the date is set must mean the venue is set as well.

Of course most people suspect that already anyways.
