:D

Predictions? I say we beat Los Angeles 3-1 on a brace from Koevermans, and a nice cross from Plata, who totally re-signed with us.

The ref will call a bunch of questionable fouls, though, and the penalty he awards to Landycakes will be BS. I won't be able to get over how much their players were flopping around, too. CONCACAF refs once again showing how bunk they are.

"D*R*" has been added to the mods bannable words list.....be careful ;) (I kidd, I kidd)

I think this thread does have great potential and should start heating up once our opponent announced and then as players are signed or re-signed.

May not become the longest thread in content, but surely the longest in time span? Or course, there will be a couple of other pre-game threads opened for the same game in the meantime, let's see which one will prevail.

At least the thread is early enough to include the following in my Xmas wish list: a) a fully fit DK by March; b) Frings playing full-time as a midfielder; c) a rock-solid-star CB, fully fit & integrated by March..... :D

EDIT and by March, I mean, by the beginning of March.

Avila will become available. Are you sure?

The most recent regulations posted on the CONCACAF site (http://www.concacaf.com/staticFiles/d1/3a/0,,12813~146129,00.pdf#page=15) clearly note on page 15:

5.3 Once having been properly inscribed on a Roster List for one Team, in any Phase, a player may not be inscribed on the Roster List for any other Team in the CCL in the same season of competition, in any Phase.

Has something changed?

Put Avila in the mid and take out Henry in favour of Cann or a new CB.

The rules seem to imply that Avila will be cup tied through all stages of the CCL, although TFC has asked CONCACAF for clarification. Cann and Williams will still be in the early stages of their return, I doubt they will start March 8.

I think it's pretty clear now. I made the mistake of only seeing the rule allowing a new 30 man roster list for the knockout rounds.

But there in 5.4 black and white it is clear- Avila is cup tied for the rest of this tournement.

I believe this is the fine print. The CCL season started in March (or april) of 2011. Is March 2012 a new season? Or a continuation of last season? Remember the CCL is built around an MLS season, not a Uefa season. Plus I'd think with a 4 month layoff between games there would have to be an allowance for transfers, esp during the winter transfer period. Also if that was the case, I believe it'd have been an issue before when MLS teams have made it this far (with so much turnover, odds are at least one new player on a team in the CCL QF was picked up from a club that at least played in qualification for the tourny)

I'm sure CCL season is group stage, then knockout stage. IE, 2011-2012 CCL.

It isn't a new season. The rest of section 5 states that a CCL season comprises 3 phases: First (preliminary) Second (group stage) Third (Championship/knockout round).

If TFC want to throw their lawyers at it, fine.

I'd assume so as well, but it wouldn't make sense for rosters to not be reset after the winter transfer window then. Even the Uefa champs league allows for transfer period action, and it's 'season' isn't nearly as long, and doesn't cover any leagues offseasons. What have past MLS teams done? I don't follow non TFC MLS action close enough to know.

Well the UEFA CL also cup ties a player for the whole season (with certain exceptions), but it is based on them being fielded in a game, as opposed to just being placed on the roster as in the CONCACAF CL.

If the good folks at head office were smart (or sneaky) they would start
selling tickets to this game immediately (while the perception still exists
that David Beckham may be part of the MLS). Otherwise, they may miss
out on a golden window of opportunity.

Besides, a pair a tickets to this event would make for a great X-mas gift.

In any case, I hope they don't overprice it. There would be nothing worse
to see on tv than 35,000 empty pale blue seats. On the other hand, a sold

I believe the reference is to the fact that the more competitive the club a player goes to it's often the less that club has to pay to get him there.

PSG, even QPR if they chose to open their purse, would throw more more at the prospect of Becks in their leagues than Spurs in the Premier league.

i believe mckenna is naturally right-footed; straith looked good at centre back for canada recently, is left footed, and i believe has played both cb and lb in his career so far, though i admit that i have not seen much of him at the club level. winter wants a right footed and left footed central back partnership. i think they would make a pretty good tandem.

meh, i doubt straith would be coming back this way any time soon anyways.

is there any chance of mckenna actually coming over?

I don't get this obsession with left footed CB. as long as the guy isn't completely weak on his left foot, is that not good enough?

straith looked good against PDL level opposition...

I don't know if McKenna would come to MLS, but he's not getting game time, and if he wants to continue his career with Canada, he's going to need to play more often. plus he's getting into twilight of his career

i'm certainly not obsessed with the idea of a left footed cb, but winter seems to like the idea; i do see the benefit of the concept, but i thought with iro it felt forced.

i would hope that a cb would be decently proficient with both feet anyways.

^ The whole left footed CB, thing, puzzles me a bit. I understand that you would rather have your LCB left footed, but it hardly seems as important as Winter and Mariner seem to think. I have never heard of it being that imporant before.

i believe that i originally heard de klerk mention it earlier in the season, and i kind of liked the idea; i can definitely understand how it would be of benefit and it shows good attention to detail, in my mind.

i just hope that it is practically handled, as in not bringing a cb in simply because they are left footed (which i am worried was a big part of getting iro, unfortunately); i would hope that the naturally left footed criteria is well down the list of checkboxes.

^ Yeah, I agree. If you are looking for a LCB and you are looking a two talented CBs, with many of the same attributes, and one of them is left footed, it could be a decisive factor. I get that. But the passes and RCB and LCB have to make are not that different. A RB and LB that is different, due to the necessity to cross. THere are not that many left footed players.

I know I read somewhere that Johnson's hometown is actually Chicago, not Toronto. But god knows we need quality Canadians.

I don't know what Johnson's contract status is, but if he's also out of contract Dec 31, it'd be interesting to see if RSL would swap Johnson for Avila.

straith is a natural LB

McKenna would look in TFC jersey. he's not getting much PT for his team in bundesliga right now

Straith is not a natural LB. He's a natural CB. He played LB for Canada in a friendly against Greece and was completely lost and made the mistake causing the goal in our 1-0 defeat.

He also plays RB.

He was slotted in at LB because we were missing De Jong and Klukowski.

^ The whole left footed CB, thing, puzzles me a bit. I understand that you would rather have your LCB left footed, but it hardly seems as important as Winter and Mariner seem to think. I have never heard of it being that imporant before.

European coaches want a left-footed centre half so they can adjust based on each team to maximize shot blocking. Players tend to cut across the box to shoot, to widen the angle on one side of the net. If you have left footed defender and play him as your RCB, he is more likely to block a player cutting in from the left, because he's sliding into the block with his best foot.

When teams employ a lot of wing play, as is often the case in the fairly technically simple MLS, and they rely on goals from those wingers as well due to a general league paucity in good finishing, they're going to spend a lot of time cutting inside.

trane
12-06-2011, 12:15 PM
^ I understand that theory. But of the top of my head, I can only think of a few left footed CBs, Khaladze who used to play with Milan, and when I have seen them they have played as the LCB, like Iro. The other left footed CB that comes to mind is Chiellini and he also plays LCB or LB.

Having played on the left side to time to time, being right footed can be burdensome at times, but I would guess that playing there game in and game out, one would adjust.

I understand that it is important but I do not remember it being key factor in sellecting a CB before.

Wooster_TFC
12-06-2011, 01:30 PM
It's possible that they don't think that any of the current options have the required attributes in first touch, passing, and positioning while playing off of their left foot.

It may not be a "he must be left footed!" but a "he must be comfortable enough with his left foot that it is at least no different than his right foot".

There have been more than a few times that generally "solid" MLS CBs playing LCB have had extraordinarily heavy touches or screwed up passes when playing with their left foot. Considering Winter seems to want his CBs to spread the play a little bit on the breakout, a switch and quick movement forward to exploit space seems ideal. Can't have someone who's likely to stumble over his own feet when he tries to play the ball with his left foot.

It's been years since it was the norm; like, think back to the 4-2-4 days, when they'd play with two wingers up top and two centre forwards (or even a centre forward and two inside forwards!). But when I was kid in England in the 1970s people still wanted a lefty on the right side.

I suppose the explosion of leagues and teams over the last four decades has made them a much scarcer commodity.

trane
12-08-2011, 01:05 PM
^ I can see that. The game is changing quickly.

It is funny, but you would think that a CB was an easy position to fill, but I quess there is something about the mental makeup, the reading of the game, being able to make the right decision under pressure, that make quality CBs a prized commodity.

The numbers have leaked, and Beckham will indeed take less to stay at LA than if he goes to PSG, much less.

However, once you're a gazillionaire parent, getting a few extra mill doesn't mean as much as having what's best for your kids. They have to trade off the cultural learnings that their kids would have by living in Paris vs. all of their friends living in LA, the LA lifestyle (much more relaxed than the Parisian one), and their kids' potential careers, the fact that the kids probably speak English and Spanish, not French, etc.

missing Juninho is huge. That kid turned out to be one of best DMs in MLS last year and he's a big part of Galaxy setup. He allowed Beckham to do whatever.

LA has signed a Brazilian midfielder Marcelo Sarvas, who is a bit of unknown quality and I don't think he plays DM. Becks at deep playmaker/DM role isn't really that suitable for him.

The assumptions behind the list are not quite correct. TFC can make an entirely new list of 30 players for the next stage. The only thing that carries over between the two lists is that if you are cap-tied, that holds for the entire competition.

It's not a desperate as you think. If TFC adds a couple of decent players, provided they haven't played for any other CCL team, they can play.

If the initial and succeeding
Roster Lists do not include the maximum 30 players, such Roster list may be
increased in a manner consistent with these Regulations, including 5.3 below,
provided the maximum of 30 players is not exceeded. That means if any of the lists have less than 30 players, you can add as the competition goes on. We are dealing with a "succeeding" Roster list, i.e. the one for the "championship" stage. If Winter only writes down 28 players, say in time for the first game, and then signs Messi** (replacing Koevs as DP), then Messi could be added for the second game.

The players from the first roster list for the group stage don't carry over to the second list for the championship stage.

** name for purpose of illustration only. :D

Are you sure? If so thank fucking god. I spent 20 min swearing at my screen as I put that list together.

The only thing that carries for all rounds is once a player has been "rosterized" he can't be put on another teams. Hence us not having hall or Avila.

All these loans are going to come back and bite them. Pro athletes need their down time. We knew Keane was going out on loan when he signed the contract, but loaning out Donovan and Gonzalez as well doesn't make any sense. I wouldn't be surprised if Beckham is loaned to PSG for a month.

Also.. $70 for the dome? They're out to lunch. That better a folding chair on the side line.

It depends on the pricing scheme relative to the seating plan. For example, if the majority of seats are priced in the $12 - $40 range, and a small section of VIP seats are priced $50 - $69, then that is still reasonable.

Why?

From my experience, the top end tickets are usually among the first to sell out for sporting events, along with the low end ones. It's the middle tier that always tends to lag behind.

So it's that giant middle tier that TFC likely has to worry most about, if history holds true.

At the breakfast they kept pushing "50,000 fans".

They better hope to get that. It will look stupid if they keep saying/pushing "50,000 fans" and only 30,000 show up.

Really, short of a sold out crowd, especially in lieu of Montreal getting 55,000 (regardless of whether or not they papered the crowd), will be a disappointment.

It will be interesting to see how ticket sales go.

MLSE is right. They'll get at least 40 000. For numerous reasons:
1) They have 3 months to sell tickets. It's not 3 weeks like a typical CL game.
2) Tickets are much cheaper compared to the average CL game.
3) It's an quarterfinal event which holds a lot more weight.
4) Beckham seems to have resigned. Players like Becks, Keane and Henry will always draw large crowds. Our record attendance at BMO came during the week against LA. Also, San Jose moved their New York game to Stanford and sold 40 000 seats. This from a small town and a team who could barely full their 10 000 seater stadium.

Sorry, yeah you weren't complaining. Actually no one was.

I think people underestimate how many people just want to be up close near field level. $69 is cheap for those types of seats. I think they'll move fast actually.

I hope everyone puts aside their feelings about MLSE and sell the shit out of this thing with all their friends. This is big opportunity to put the sport on the map in the city. 70% of seats are below $30. We should be able to pull in the big crowd.,

Yeah I don't see why some people think less than 20,000 will show up, this isn't a regular CCL game! I'm going to restate your reasons to emphasize how much I agree.

Beckham. He alone sold out BMO, that's 22k. Add Keane to the mix and that's 30k people as the minimum that will turn up.
These are the only "playoffs" we've ever qualified for. Toronto crowds show up in force for playoff games.
This isn't a CCL game in the middle of another losing season. It's the season opener which always has higher attendance. There's real momentum and hope around the team.

I really believe that 30k is the minimum for attendance and 40k is a realistic possibility if MLSE knows how to market it. How close to or beyond 40k it goes depends on the breakdown of the ticket prices.

Here is a virtual seating plan for the Bills game last year... should be pretty similar for us.

On a side note... man were those bills tickets expensive!

Yeah I don't see why some people think less than 20,000 will show up, this isn't a regular CCL game! I'm going to restate your reasons to emphasize how much I agree.

I really believe that 30k is the minimum for attendance and 40k is a realistic possibility if MLSE knows how to market it. How close to or beyond 40k it goes depends on the breakdown of the ticket prices.

It'll be the same issue as always. They'll do well with the cheaper seats, but if they're not super careful, they'll get only 5,000 people in the lower bowl.

These idiots haven't learned one bit. Good luck selling out the Dome now.I don't get it. $12 a ticket, and people are still complaining?

MLSE is right. They'll get at least 40 000. For numerous reasons:
1) They have 3 months to sell tickets. It's not 3 weeks like a typical CL game.Today is January 6th. Tickets go on general sale January 13th. Game is March 7th. Less than 2 months.

$69 is nothing for people who actually buy high-priced tickets (the target market for that price). That's a very low top end for just about all sporting events or concerts in Toronto. And if the whole 500 level is $12, that's great. Actually, I think sitting in the first few rows of the 500 level would provide a better view than sitting down low near the field for $69. The owner of the Cosmos actually used to sit in the upper deck of Giants stadium because he could see the game better from there.

I'm probably gonna grab 200 level seats on the side. High up enough to get a view of the whole field, but not so far away.

^ I agree. They'll have no trouble selling the $69 seats. That's cheap for the best seats.

I don't undertsand why CONCACAF won't allow the rosters to reset for the next round. It is a distinct disadvantage for MLS clubs that qualify for the CCL quarter final due to the routine roster turnover of most MLS clubs in the off season.

Yeah the high end sounds a little too high.

It will be interesting to see how ticket sales go.

exactly how much were the Montreal tickets?

$10 were the cheapest face value, but some youth soccer clubs got them cheaper. They basically papered the house.

I expect that TFC will offer deals to GTA youth clubs as well.

It's a good question about how they arrange seating for tickets bought by those typically in supporters sections. If we can buy as many $12 tickets as we want, do we also have choice of where we want the seats to be for those $12 tickets? For example, my boss wants to go but I don't necessarily want to sit with him. I know many people will want me to get them tickets but that doesn't mean they are suited to a supporters section - may be they would be a downer to us and they would be uncomfortable in a racious section too...

so if 30% of the tickets are going to be over $30 and the Skydome holds about what 40k for a event like this? that means 12,000 tickets are over $30.. what is the value on those? I don't mind spending $40-$50 for the game for decent to better then average seats.

capacity will be around 50,000 I would assume. So 35,000 seats for $30 or less and 15,000 for more than $30.

What did the Argos get for the last home playoff game? I would use that number as a marker for how much TFC will get for this game. A Grey Cup will sell out. A Jays homeopener will sell out. A Jays playoff game might sell out. Anything else... I don;t see it.

Beckham will sell out. Or at the very least attract a crowd of 40,000. At the breakfast today all the promos had Donovan, but you can bet that will quickly change.
Its those fans that will fill the cheap seats, and the premium seats. Toronto has always been an event town. Whether its the first UFC, or Wrestlemania, or the grey Cup, a bigger crowd will come to an event.
Beckham was a big factor in seasons seats being sold out in year 1. Before LA signed him, TFC had booths in the Eaton Centre pushing $200 season seats. After he signed season seats were mostly gone.
And last season, LA attracted a legitimate sold out crowd (there werent many of them) on a cold wednesday night.
I think they'll market him heavily to sell tickets, and there will be a crowd of 40-50,000.

I've been corrected that the rosters don't reset, the CCL rules are poorly worded. That really sucks, it means we have only one spot free,

Wow, this is truly nuts. I can understand that the guys that played for a different team in the same CCL, aren't eligible. But that there's no consideration that MLS teams are now in a new season, and may have a bunch of new players...??? On the flip side, that disadvantages MLS teams that make it further in the CCL: it massively restricts the kind of player moves you can make in the off-season. What if an MLS team makes it into this CCL round, a couple of years in a row? Their in-season roster moves are restricted by MLS, and their off-season moves are restricted by CCL.

In that case, alot of the off-season talk we read here & elsewhere, was also unrealistic. I.e., that we should dump many more players to be ready for the new season (Harden, Iro, etc etc).

When the Dome hosted the Grey Cup a few years ago several of the beer carts ran out of beer halfway through the 2nd quarter. The beer carts that still had beer had hugely long lines. The people manning the beer carts were inexperienced, a.k.a. slow. Rider Nation simply overwhelmed the Dome's beer operation. Will we get Carlsberg or the usual Dome beers?

If you're a current season seat holder, you'll get a special link/password tomorrow morning, to purchase at the pre-sale price, anywhere in the stadium, except in the reserved sections. That includes availability of those parts of the supporter's section that aren't reserved for the defined supporters group members -- i.e., sections 122-125 at Rogers Centre.

I assume if you're a RPB member, you'll get special info in the members only section of this forum instead, how to get tickets in the SG reserved section (Section 118-121 at Rogers Centre).

No. The first leg of the semis is march 27. If we do make it we would have a tough 10 days:

27th at BMO v winner of Seattle / Santos Laguna

31st at BMO v Crew

my 2 cents; make it known the fans are doing o canada at kickoff. it'll get the people who dont normally sing/chant into the game with something everyone knows/likes and it'll get the emotions going for the game (if everyone gets behind it and really belts it).
