Just saw this on twitter. Can anyone shred some more light?

@bill_ault: Torsten Frings back from Toronto with Werder Bremen until January. Many of their fans will hope it's not just to train.

According to Matt Herrmann of Deutsche Welle sports Frings is only back in Germany to train. I think his source is Bild.

Yup, as mentioned, it's just to train. And it's not definite yet -- discussed but not yet decided with the Werder coach. One thing is, they don't want it to become a distraction for the team.

This isn't a huge surprise really - and a good thing all around I think...

He'll be in Germany with his family (extended family included) for the holidays which is good for him, and training with a high level club is good for us...

They want him as a coach at some point, so makes sense they'd keep the relationship strong by offering that.

I don't usually think this about older DP's, but I wonder how much he was actually challenged this season?

The only tint to it is that for the first time in his professional footballing career he had to play (far) away from his family. Who wouldn't want to get back ASAP to see them.

Nothing really Spectacular, He's there to train, Think it's an interesting playing here, having to travel so far for games and at such different altitudes. I can understand his thoughts here, Germany is a much smaller place then North America.

Wants to train until January when Preseason Starts here.

Compares MLS to 2nd Bundesliga says it is lacking in technology and tactics, which we already know but its a fair compliment that the league is being compared to second tier European leagues is a plus.

One thing that I found interesting and my German is very bad. But it seems either Toronto or Bremen is trying to get him to sign a contract to come in as staff at the end of his Career but I can't tell which team. He hasn't signed anything yet though.

anyone read German a lot better then me? It's taken the better part of any hour for me to get that much.

He was suppose to sign a contract with Werder to be a part of their staff after he retires, however Werder did not offer him anything for now and he does not know what he will do after retirement

He also said how he loves Toronto he can do whatever he wants without being approached on the street and it was right decision to come here to play.

Just the title of this thread is enough to raise people's panic levels to 4 out of 5. :D

BTW, Frings is a big enough name that he would never need a trial to prove himself, unlike some North American players.

If he's there for "training," it's because he's there for training.

The tweet suggest that Bremen supporters wish it wasn't just to train.

My next door neighbour seems to always have the scoop because of his connections with people in and around the team. He told me about the DeRo training with Celtic long before it ever made the news among many other things that have all come to pass but he is always holding back certain details with me. I don't think he means to hold back it is more just because he happens to hear the conversations and doesn't really know the team well enough to give me exact details. Also, his accent is hard to understand. He told me there will be at least a few of the players we have going on loans or just training with teams overseas to stay fit. I guess he wasn't far off again. Based on that I would think that Frings won't be the only one. Again, I never really post this stuff because I am always skeptical but he is right too many times and I find it interesting when things get confirmed.

Actually, Werder did already offer him a contract as a trainer, for the time after he retires as a player. Frings said "I haven't signed the contract, although one was offered to me. That offer still stands. But I don't know yet, what I will do later."

Puts an interesting tint on the "why did he rush back to Germany" discussion.

No, not at all. Especially since there have only been vague conversations with Werder about training with them, nothing concrete yet.

The guy likes it in Toronto, likes his high-rise apartment near the Rogers Centre with view of the lake, likes the adventure he's been having.

But he's very happy to be back in Bremen for the off-season. (Note that the population of Bremen is around 550,000.) He stayed a long time at the TFC 90th-minute party, milling with the fans, and was friendly, although he probably didn't feel very comfortable. That was likely enough for him. In these German interviews, they mention with a wink that they're surprised to get Torsten in for any interview, let alone an extended interview. He's known in Germany for not being a big fan of the media hype. And he's mentioned that he had to get used to that in Toronto, including the media access immediately after games.

LOL, he forgot to park his motorcycle in the garage before he left Bremen, now it's all bleached.

He says TFC has about 3.8 million Euros = $5.3 million in salary for the whole squad. First I thought he had the salary cap (2.55 mill) wrong -- but maybe that's the total including the 3 DPs?

interesting point, why dont we have a sister club?
RSL has one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Salt_Lake#Real_Madrid_and_Youth_Academy) with real madrid, but i don't know how that's working out for them. anyone have any word on whether or not its been looked into by the FO?

Well, on the one hand, the benefits might only be cosmetic, and a waste of time. On the other hand, there could be real benefits in terms of loans and whatnot, but it might also be too limiting for TFC if that's the case. I'd rather we just stayed the course as is.

There needs to be an actual financial interest for partnerships to be meaningful. Most partnerships whether Euro league to MLS or MLS to lower division North American teams are tenuous at best.

Not quite as good news as it seems. What it means is that we have no choice, we HAVE to include him in our protected list. so we don't get to pick 11 plus Frings, but we have to pick him.

Doesn't change much as he'd have been there anyway.

http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/content/2012-expansion-draft-rules

Designated players are NOT automatically protected (i.e., clubs must choose whether to protect such players and if such player is not protected, he will be available for selection in the Expansion Draft). However, if the Designated Player has a no-trade clause in his contract, then his MLS club must protect him and he will count as one of the 11 players who may be protected.

Some awful reporting this morning on mlsnet. They refer to an AFP article, and say that "another DP could be on the move. Bundesliga side Werder Bremen wants Toronto's Torsten Frings to coach the youth team. “It is 99 percent set,” Bremen head coach Klaus Allofs said."

Click through to the link, and you'll find this article: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jIJG0cn8Yha-ICl6D1uD39l7p_QQ?docId=CNG.fd0f0c2cc1dd8cdffbe8bbb 9258642a2.d51

Which is pretty clear that Frings would not go before he finishes in Toronto.

Ya..that sounds pretty misleading from mlsnet , doesn't it.

And just for clarification for those that dont open the link, I'm completing the sentence you posted:

"Is is 99 percent set that Torsten Frings will pursue his career as a coach at Werder Bremen after his time in Toronto," said Allofs.

So at least they are respecting our contract and it's not like he's about to leave immediately.

BTW.. other reports have Allofs possibly not sticking around very long.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7306918/Allofs-hints-at-summer-departure

So, it would seem a lot of talk is going on over there and I assume we don't have to worry about Frings leaving in the short term.
