re: Two Goalies. I spoke to Stef after the game on Saturday. I found it curous that he was hanging around by the exit - wondered if that was an omen. Kind of teased him a bit about the injuries and asked when he'd be back... he said "I'm not injured". A few more questions prompted "you'll have to ask management".

It was all good-natured. He's a well-mannered guy. It would be a pity to see either him or Milos get moved, but it appears that we may be on the verge of that happening.

Maybe that's why Milos is playing more lately - he's been put 'in the shop window', as it were.

I'm expecting us to lose 1 in the expansion draft... :(

Current MLS clubs will be allowed to protect 11 players from their 2011 roster, though there are several categories of players who have special status. Generation adidas players and Homegrown Players on the team’s Off-budget Roster are automatically protected, without counting as one of the team’s 11 protected spots.

However reading the paragraph above, we could protect both, no?

With 3 DP's not needing protection, we can "protect" a total of 14...?

Might be worth protecting both - even if it means trading one for something in return...

But like I said, I'm not well versed in the expansion draft rules at all - so I may be out to lunch on all this lol

Seattle's in need of a goalkeeper next year. Any central defenders we could take off their hands?

I would be very disappointed for Stephen if he was told to go to another MLS team. He needs to get to Europe next.

Attifield's Globe article is excessively negative, more appropriate for last year than this.

The rule is confusing, but DP's are NOT automatically protected. Basically if they have a no-trade clause then you have to use one of your 11 spots to protect them. But if they don't have a no-trade clause and you leave them open, they can be picked up by Montreal.

I don't see the expansion draft being a problem for us. At worst we would lose a guy like Marosevic but Montreal could get a better player from a team that has more depth. 10 of the 18 teams will have a player chosen, you would think that they would be from the better teams in the league.

yeah, the team will have to protect frings, danny k, and jdg if they are worried about losing them. we do have a few guys that are automatically covered though, outside of the eleven; morgan, stinson, cordon, and makubuya are all protected under the homegrown off-budget clause; henry and lindsay both fall right near the line, but i have been unable to find information on how the season ending injury spots affect the overall roster makeup.

Attifield's Globe article is excessively negative, more appropriate for last year than this.

I was actually going to say (before reading your post): Cathal Kelly's negative rant from the weekend pissed me off, because it was poorly researched, contradicted his own article from a few days early, and in a few points concerning the actual footy being played, was downright ridiculous. It was clear he was just trying to bend everything into the negative slant he picked for his piece.

However, I'm totally OK with Attfield's article, even if I personally have a slightly more positive outlook in the end. It's written fairly well, and does acknowledge some of the changes & improvements. It also seems fairly accurate -- although he does read way too much into Kocic's comments at the end, when he writes "either him or Stefan Frei will almost certainly not be in TFC red when training camp opens ." That's not what Kocic said -- just that whoever is there next year (one or both of them) they will continue with the same collegial approach amongst the TFC goalies.

Note also that Mariner clearly said, they would like to keep both Kocic and Stefan (end of the article http://www.torontosun.com/2011/10/24/tfc-has-two-goalies-one-net) -- obviously, if possible.

In the end, how you rate the overall performance & outlook of the team at the end of the season, is a personal opinion, and I can live with Attfield's opinion.

Assuming here you're referring to Stefan when you say "Stephen," but I just love when people bust out this line. Stef is a good goalkeeper -- by MLS standards. You'll say, "but the quality of the defending would be much better in front of him," but what people forget is the quality of the attacking is also commesurately better in Europe.

He's not ready for Europe. Rimando (RSL) is a better goalkeeper and I'd say Rimando's not ready for Europe either.

I find it interesting that nearly every article today was positive except from the Globe. It just seems odd to be that negative.

Are their issues but for the first time in a long time it doesn't look like the team is going to have a new manager, fans aren't protesting, and at least 13 (just a random number) guys from this season are likely to stay on the team into next. And we made it to the Quarter Finals in the Champions league.

Did we miss the play offs yes. Is the team a contender in it's current state.. not yet but it's getting there. And I think we have a lot to look forward to.
March will be a pretty big test.

What has more rules: Canadian Tax Law or MLS Roster/Salary Structure/Cap...???

It gets very confusing at time...

TFC Brass Not Satisfied With Rebuild: "Team management played it coy when asked to appraise the current status of the club.

“We are on the right track,” said head coach/technical director Aron Winter.

Halfway through? A quarter of the way?

“We’re on the right track,” he repeated.

Which is a significant improvement over right off the tracks, which is where the club stood at this point the past few years.

Funny, another article called it the dog and pony show that is MLS playoffs.

A couple of articles did mention that Plata and Eckersley were looking forward to staying at TFC and Burnley wasn't begging for Eckersley to return to England. I think the only realistic option to sign might be Plata, unless Eckersley is able to be resigned on a slightly lower wage salary.

The sad part about all this is the ultimate makeover of the central defense. We might not even keep a backup central defender currently on the team other than D.Henry. It would be disappointing if we cant even keep Andy Iro, a guy we traded for Tchani, who we got for DeRosario.

If you ask me I think trades in MLS usually result in TFC picking up the worst possible player in exchange for a possible decent one in the draft. So we tend to lose twice.

if you haven't seen them yet, go see TFC's year end interviews. I got a lot out of it, esp how the players respect Winter and locker room harmony is good. Frei and Kocic talking about how they consider the other guy playing is like how he is also represented in net speaks volumes.

Auzzy - yes, not a bad article. Seems to me he's probably had a very negative view for a while (a sentiment seen around these parts as well) but pulled back a bit as things seemed to fall in place somewhat in the last part of the season.

i agree. i think he's a bit overrated by TFC fans. he's a good keeper, however if by 'europe' you mean a top flight spot, i don't think so.
