A new-look MLS SuperDraft will have a new home for 2012, as the league announced on Friday that the annual event is scheduled to shift to Kansas City
The 2012 SuperDraft is set for Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Kansas City Convention Center and will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention for the eighth straight year.
For the 2012 version, the SuperDraft will be reduced from three rounds to two, making for 38 overall selections. The first round will be broadcast live on ESPN2 starting at 12 noon ET.
As in past expansion seasons, newcomers Montreal Impact will be selecting first overall. The following eight picks are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2011 postseason, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 picks will be determined by the order in which teams are eliminated in the playoffs combined with reverse order of regular season finish.

The Academy's are making teams care less about the draft and focus on homegrown players

I believe Toronto traded away for 3rd round picks for this year. What happens to those? Are we SOL and just gave a player away, or are we going to get some sort of compensation?

I think the best way to handle it, would be to keep it at 2 rounds, but hold a 3rd round for teams that picked up that spot via trade.

Probably get allocation money from MLS to make up for loss draft picks.

Makes sense to scrap the last round of the draft. In all honestly most players after the first round don't make it long term in the league as it is and the number of successful players coming out of the draft will likely begin to decline with the emphasis on academy's.

One thing is that everyone's darling Joao Plata was selected with the last pick in the draft this season. Would he have been selected if the draft was only 2 rounds.

Also what harm would if be to keep the last round of the draft if players selected there just get cut in training camp anyway. At least that would give them a chance to try out.

Probably would have gone into the supplemental draft.

So, if this was the format last year, would Plata have been drafted? :P

Exactly.

As the league gets better, the league will move away from the NCAA route.

The odd player here and there will come through but it won't be as important anymore.
