Toronto FC In Vancouver
Velez No Stranger To Swangaard
Toronto FC trained in Vancouver on Tuesday evening ahead of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship clash against the Whitecaps on Wednesday night (kick off 10:00 p.m. live on Gol TV). Playing at the compact Swangaard Stadium will be a new experience for many of the Reds squad, but defender Marco Velez knows exactly what to expect. Velez played for Puerto Rico Islanders in the United Soccer League before signing for Toronto, and is no stranger to games at Vancouver. "I've played at Vancouver many times," said Velez. "It's a smaller stadium, but they have good fans. It's a good environment to play in, and it's not quiet like most of the USL. They have a good fan base and will yell at you and make themselves heard. It should be a good experience."

Reds set for battle in B.C.
Head coach John Carver chats about the clash vs. Vancouver
Toronto FC return to action in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship on Wednesday night against Vancouver Whitecaps. Kick off is set for 10:00 p.m. ET. Reds coach John Carver said his players are "fired up for a battle."
"This game is even more important than the last game against Vancouver," said Carver. "We know what we have to do. To give ourselves a chance to get in the Champions League, we need to get something from the game. I'll not need to say too much to the guys, because they'll definitely be fired up."
Toronto were beaten 1-0 by Vancouver at BMO Field on Canada Day. Martin Nash scored a first half penalty to win the game and give the Whitecaps their first victory in the tournament. In the United Soccer League, Vancouver are without a win in their last five games.

Academy through to U-17 semifinals
Reds beat Kansas City 3-1 to advance in SUM U-17 Cup
TFC Academy U16's are through to the semi finals of the SUM U-17 Cup in Colorado after a 3-1 win over Kansas City Wizards on Monday night. Ryan McLeod scored twice as the Reds maintained their winning run at the tournament to finish top of the group with three wins from three games. Kansas City proved to be worthy opponents," said U16 Head Coach Stuart Neely. "Eventually our composure on the ball allowed us to take out some of their threats and let us put pressure on them. It was a windy day and I think we dealt with the conditions a bit better than them."

White is the colour …
They aren't quite back to the glory days of Willie Johnston, Phil Parkes and the lads, but the Whitecaps huge clash Wednesday against Toronto FC of MLS shows they're on their way.
Because of a pair of 2-0 losses to fellow A-League squad Montreal, it's unlikely the Whitecaps will progress to the next stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
But still, they're expecting a sell out against a glamour club from allegedly a league above. The MLS has bigger stadiums, it has Landon Donovan (guffaw), and of course David Beckham. The leap in quality isn't much at all, to be honest.

Coaches at each other's throats

TORONTO -- A war of words has emerged between Toronto FC coach John Carver and Vancouver Whitecaps coach Teitur Thordarson ahead of their crucial CONCACAF Champions League qualification match.
Carver said the Caps took liberties with his team's top players during the 1-0 Vancouver victory last week:
"Our flair players were eliminated as soon as they got in possession of the ball so I felt like we didn't get any protection [from the referee]".
The first-year Toronto coach wants the officials to handle the rematch in Burnaby differently:
"I just hope whoever the official is will be strong enough to deal with that and give us an opportunity to show teams what we can do."
Carver made the comments at his team's final training session. When word of Carver's criticism reached Vancouver later in the day, Thordarson hit back: "That's bull. He should just focus on his own way of playing.

Carver hits out at officials
TFC coach wants his top players 'protected' against the Whitecaps

Toronto FC hasn't even kicked off with the Vancouver Whitecaps yet, and TFC head coach John Carver is already beefing with officials.
Eight days ago at BMO Field Carver remained silent while his players ripped officials for questionable calls at crucial moments in TFC's 1-0 loss to Vancouver.
But yesterday Carver used the team's website to issue some pre-emptive criticism toward officials before tonight's Canadian Championship tournament match.
"I just hope we get some protection for our quality players," Carver told the website. "Their game plan when we played at home was obvious to everybody. Our flair players were eliminated from the game, and didn't get any protection. I just hope that the officials are strong enough to deal with that and see what is happening."
