hmm.... I wouldn't really call it "heartbreaking" when making the playoffs was always a longshot.

It's more of a 'nail in the coffin' kind of comparison.

I'm really excited with a full off season, the work that has been put in, and hopefully a few changes and tweaks to the defenders, and I've never been so optimistic at the end of the season.

This wasn't a great season, Winter underestimated the league and brought in players he felt would work but didn't. He learned, he adapted, and he has shown progress. We haven't heard bitching and complaining, and the guys seem to say positive things.

He has a vision which is nice, but he will adapt.

And the fact that we are getting more points per game now, is positive.

He just needs to figure out the back line, once that happens I'm excited.

the Red Bull game just highlights that need.

What is really sad is that we are back to October 2009. Were we have a decent squad that needs some tweaking... it's sad the FO didn't leave well enough alone. Though I think Winter is producing a full club system, and not just a first team, and I'm excited, particularly if we can beat Dallas.

agreed. I was optimistic when MoJo got the boot, but this is a positive optimism where I honestly believe things will be better.

Imagine the team we have today, with a full off-season to train and a few select trades.

It may have been that to a certain extent but to be fair to him he arrived so late that he was effectively dealing with somebody else's discovery claims when training camp started and had a very limited amount of time to find alternatives to the likes of Ornoch, Ent and Sidra, who he clearly didn't rate. No surprise that he would have focused on where he had the best contacts in that situation i.e. Holland and Belgium. Mariner and Winter did a good job with the flurry of midseason trades and the improvement went well beyond the two big money DPs. If they do their homework as meticulously where discovery claims for the 2012 training camp invites are concerned there is every reason to expect another marked improvement in quality early next season.

Agreed.

I said the same thing in the Iro thread. A full off-season will do some of our younger, raw players a universe of good...

The staff is here, the facilities are here, the big name/talent players (Frings, Koevy) are here, its time to put all those pieces together for the good of the club...

Call me a 'blind faither' or 'believer' but I do think its coming...

Simply put, we're playing the best overall football of our existence. For once, we don't look like underdogs competing against giants, we look on par with the other teams we play.

We're conceding too many goals, which is just a sign of unfamiliarity and perhaps a lack of quality. Both will be addressed as the next seasons starts.

But it's an interesting observation, that Harden and Iro have enjoyed some solid games, after getting some time to play with each other consistently. Danny Koevermans said it best, it's unheard of that players turnover this rapidly - we needed to build some team chemistry and it looks like we finally have it.

I don't think we need to make many changes next year, besides in the centre of defence and a backup striker for Koev - we should have kept Alan Gordon to be honest because he would have been the like-for-like replacement but his injuries were too hazardous.

One thing I don't get, isn't being a sports fan about faith? If you don't have faith in your team winning, improving, and eventually challenging for a title then you aren't really a fan right? Whatever. I'm also really looking forward to seeing what Winter and Mariner can do with a full offseason, and the ability to research and draft properly. Plus we'd have to assume Winter is getting better as a coach game by game right? He's learning on the job too. Next year maybe he won't repeate some of his mistakes (ie overplaying players).

This year I took as a rebuilding year, and I was just looking for glimmers of hope. Next year there will be serious expectations, and I really think the team can meet them. As we've seen from some of the games we've played in the CL, we aren't NEARLY as bad as the tone of this forum would have you believe. Like armen said, we're a side now that can compete with almost every team in MLS. We may not be able to beat every team yet, but being able to compete is a big step up from where we were last year and early this year

I don't mean to pick apart your post based on one comment, but this one stood out to me. Looking over TFC's salaries, it appears that Winters has done a decent job in not overpaying for talent. The only non-DP players above 100k a season are Avila, Frei, Cann, Johnson, Marosevic & Viator.

All of those players either came over via a trade, or had existing contracts, with the exception of Viator. Even so, they are all under 135k. Compare that with previous seasons with the likes of Barrett being vastly overpaid.

IMO Winters/Mariner have done an excellent job managing salaries and the cap, especially with the number of salaries still on our books from players no longer playing with us.
