First team.

Of course, this is TFC's "luck".
In the first 2 games they seem they don't care at all about this competition, playing 2nd teams, gifting opposition (and TFC's opposition in the group) with easy points, and then they suddenly decide to care, just against TFC! :(

This makes no sense at all.

jloome

Our defence's absence of work ethic on both goals was disgraceful.

Doneil Henry Looked back, saw the man making a run, and still lost a 10-yard lead on the guy. I'm sure he has lots of physical tools but he has a 10-cent head and shouldn't be starting.

Iro? Enough said. He's a clod at this level. If he's paired with a better defender who's also a leader, he might not look awful. But he's just not a good player.

Really, this is a team we should be able to beat , given how they're playing at home and how many youth players they have.

Swiss cheese defence this year. We're not going anywhere in CCL with it, and we all know what Winter, De Kleerk adn Marriner have to obtain in the offseason.

TFC defense is crap as expected. However, what's up with our midfield (& forwards), especially compared with the way TFC played vs Columbus? Very little maintenance of possession in the middle, long balls to the forwards, etc.

gtaguy
09-14-2011, 07:38 PM

Well, after 1-0 I had my dinner, because all the streams are almost unwatchable on my end, plus the defense IMO started to look like shit after the first 10 mins of the game.

I came back now and I'm just reading this thread, not even bothering to torture myself with the streams.
Then I found out that's already 2-0, thanks to Iro (why I'm not surprised at all?), then after just 2 mins of reading the thread I found out it's 3-0.

Conclusion: so long guys, I have better things to do with my life for this evening... See you all Saturday.

Unless Iro is injured, I'm gonna say that's as harsh as HELL of Winter to single out Iro as the "issue" by subbing him. At least 3 of the goals (including that non offside as Morgan (or whoever it was on the far side) was obviously keeping the player onside)) were definitely not Iro's fault!

Agreed. Besides, Pumas have been terrible in this contest and two-thirds of their starters are from their u20 side, so no, we shouldn't all have been expecting TFC to lose.

Our defenders are, indeed, lazy ass. Or, more approriately, have very poor judgment with respect to when to close, when to get back, speed of opponents -- almost anything to do with basically reading the game.

Ive been saying this for 4/5 years.

Our backline isnt the issue, it is the tactics. They are being left too exposed by pacy side in wide fields. Happens all the time.

We have had 5 coaches who want to push their backs forward and it exposed our slow backline.

Its a coaching issue, not players. There is far to large of a gap between the midfield and backline too.

I know there are many who crave attacking football, but this match is once again a standard Ive been holding up and will continue to do so. This is not exciting, this is a horrible game and shows why all the successful teams in MLS, even if they are "attacking" teams, their 1st priority is to defend.

That is how MLS teams win. I want winning football.

Definately one of the best sports events Ive seen.

I think it bodes well for Canada. If they can continue to defend well in their 22 and maintain possession in the forwads, they will be able to push Japan up the field. That forward play was textbook. You can really see the influence of the NZ coaching. As a former prop and lock, it truly was amazing.

What concerns me is that our backs do not have the attacking acumen, from what Ive seen in the US matches and now Tonga, to stretch the field and be able to manage open space.

Too often bad passes were made in an attempt to make a big play that resulted in turnovers and there were more than a few kicks put astray which kept Tonga in a match. If I am to be fully honest, Tonga did not deserve to be in close despite the posession and territory advantages. Poor ball management by Canada I think created those skewed stats.

I think Japan will be able to capitalize on those errors more efficiently as they will not try to keep the ball in their forwards but twill ry to hit their backs on the breaks.

Not really. We had two players at the point of the shot on three of the goals, and a defender was beaten 1-on-1 on the other. This has nothing to do with shape.

If it were about width and movement, they'd be scoring off of balls played into the box, but they've beaten us by skinning the crap out of defenders, repeatedly. This is purely, purely a talent issue.

Its not just a talent issue. All players in MLS have a flaw which prevents them from playing at a higher level.

We've been saying "its talent" all this time, but the only thing that remains the same is the inane tactical approach while players leave TFC and flourish. Since day 1 our defenders cannot be allowed to be run at, yet because we want to push forward there are massive gaps left.

Cann, Iro, Harden and company do not have that skill set. With such space between the midfield and out wide, there is no overlap in the defensive coverage and therefore our defenders are left on an island far too often.

The reason why they are not scoring from crosses is that we defend that very well. We do not have players who can take on a guy on a dribble and to be fair, not many teams at this level have that. What alleviates that trouble is playing your mid and backline much tighter than what is happening now.

I would argue that this team is the worst we have had and skill for skill, the best we have had.

Talent? To a degree. Misuse of the talent we have? For me thats the winner and has been as such.

There are no great 1v1 defenders in MLS.

That is a fact. Defending in MLS is done by 5-6 players as a unit. Always has always will be. Top defenders who can play 1v1 are in better leagues. Iro was a beast for years in Columbus, he just forgot to play? No Schmid knew how to use him. In Toronto he is left with far to much space to cover and is so low on confidence and is in such a system which exposes defenders, it makes no difference who is back there.

1v1 no one in Torontos system in MLS will be good enough.

I agree with the original poster...it IS a tactics issue. We are losing ALL the midfield play over and over in this game. The midfield HAS to take the pressure off the defense...but unfortunately with the 3 midfielders, we are being over run in the middle of the park!

Playing these tactics over and over away from home is suicidal football!

You could have Vidic, Terry, Cole, and Evra at the back line, but if the midfield ahead of them are giving the ball away and not closing down all game, then they will be beaten over and over again!

This, really, is all about tactics and very little to do with footballing skill, IMO.

Balderdash.

Its a fact, I try to watch MLS when possible, when exposed MLS defenders get skinned more than a night at the rippers.

The 1v1 defending is in fact atrocious and to compensate teams usually keep a tigher midfield and tacticaly committ to defending first. Using pace wide and a few technical players to keep possession.

When was the last time TFC put together more than six passes? Our backline is constantly under siege and being run at. Its happened all year and Winter has done nothing to address it.

Intermediate teams don't defend with 5 or 6 players. You don't know what you're talking about.
