I think it cleans up the boards a ton. This way (hopefully) there won't be such a proliferance of threads created for the sole purpose of drawing the reader to someone's blog.

You know, threads like this :

Thanks for doing this. I think its an excellent idea.

The NEE have been doing this for a long time for me on their board and I for one really like that it keeps everything tidy and in one place.

By the way I came across this excellent blog post today that is in defense of Mo Johnston and his tenure with Toronto FC. I am not a huge Mo fan by any means but that does not take away from what I think is an excellent read and a well reasoned argument.

That MoJo defense sure was interesting but hard to read due to a selective use of facts.

How many times did Mo lie to us? To DeRo? How many times did his "scouting trips to Brazil" and his unnamed great players that somehow never signed happen? Far too often, I'm afraid.

ML$E's greatest error (besides ripping off the fans) was keeping MoJo on when it became evident that he couldn't do the job.

alright, new home, smells nice.

anyway, I knwo you're all just dying to read another report on last night's game, so here it is, a fitting tribute to Mo Johnston (http://www.wakingthered.com/2011/9/14/2426360/pumas-unam-4-0-toronto-fc-a-fitting-tribute-to-mo). their goalie made the early saves, ours didn't, the defence was awful, the offside trap inept, and we're lucky it was only 4.

TFC Get A Reality Check at Pumas

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2011/09/reality-check/

In this post game video blog after TFC's back down to earth loss in Mexico City vs Pumas in the CONCACAF Champions League I make the argument that the loss was an unlucky loss (not disappointing or for that matter embarrassing) based much on the timing of the fixture.

I take a brief look ahead at the speed bump for the Reds on Saturday versus Colorado and what TFC needs to do when they return to Champions League play next week against Tauro. And finally I urge the TFC coaching staff to start fining (if they are allowed to do so) or benching defenders who stop running and put up their arms up for offsides instead of running the plays out and letting the officials do their jobs, which happened time after time Wednesday evening in Mexico City.

i agree, i love reading what the fellas are writing, but how about we include it in the days news instead?

there are pros and cons to each method. Many boards choose to do what we've done here. Blogging tends to be more analysis-oriented than news-oriented so it deserves its own spot. Anyways, please lets limit discussion to what the bloggers are writing, and place Board Suggestions in the appropriate area.

Koevermans And The Capos

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2011/09/koevermans-and-the-capos/

In this post game video blog I take a look back at Saturday’s game that saw Toronto FC, on a brace from Danny Koevermans and a somewhat less brittle than normal defensive effort overall, beat the Colorado Rapids at home 2-1. I also take some other TFC supporters to task who chose Saturday to criticize us in the supporters section for what was by our standards a less than enthusiastic start to our chanting and cheering efforts. And finally I throw some huge praise towards those TFC Fans that choose to give up their game as paying customers to work hard on getting everybody else cheering loudly for the team.

who knows what caused it, but yesterday's first half was a great reminder of why football needs supporters groups. on the pitch, good for danny, he's the anti chad barrrett, and we've now got 10 points in our last 5 games, not too shabby at all.

Toronto FC Still Alive in the CCL

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2011/09/still-alive/

Six points in four games in the group stages of the CONCACAF Champions League after Toronto FC defeats Tauro of Panama 2-0 at BMO Field on Wednesday.

In this video blog I take a look back at the game and I try and place the relative success TFC has recently had in all competitions into some sort of context. And I take a look ahead at the scenarios that might still give Toronto a chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League during the upcoming winter/spring.

Darlofletch

CCL qualification permutations here (http://www.wakingthered.com/2011/9/21/2441604/tfc-qualify-if-ccl-permutations-aplenty).

anything less that 3 points in 2 games is completely useless. 3 points might be enough with the right help from Tauro. tie then win more than 1-0 is all good no matter what tauro do. win by less than 4-0, then tie is no good without help from tauro. 2 wins and we're golden.

if either we get a point or dallas drops points next week, we're still alive going into the last game.

Eric Avila Finding Himself At Toronto FC

http://www.rednationonline.ca/AvilafindinghimselfatTFC.aspx

Really good interview, I particularly liked this:

“Of course, it’s always a learning experience,” he says of his newfound playing time, which has seen him utilized as a centralized attacking midfielder, the top point of a 4-3-3 triangle. For Avila, a fixed position doesn’t restrict his game

That's really good that he can be creative within the system. It's so important.

yes they should, and maybe, hopefully, probably not but it's likely our best chance of getting the point we need.

Winter Gambles - Winter Loses - TFC Out of Playoffs

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2011/09/winter-loses/

My video look back at the loss in Los Angeles Saturday evening that saw TFC's slim mathematical chances of a late season run getting them into the back door of the MLS playoffs to an end in a 3-0 loss to Chivas USA.

Instead of taking much of a look back at a forgettable game I instead speak about the gamble that Aron Winter took with his lineup Saturday evening and how anything less than a win on Tuesday in the Champions League versus Pumas will likely open him up to a huge torrent of criticism from the fans based on the choices he made Saturday in California.

Nigel Reed has a blog on the Whitecaps:

The Whitecaps are on course to become the worst expansion team since Toronto FC in 2007. Four years ago, Mo Johnston's hastily assembled motley crew won just six games. Vancouver, by contrast, has tasted victory just four times in 29 starts.

The loss to Seattle hammered the final nail in the coffin. As a result the Whitecaps officially became the first team to be eliminated from the post-season. No playoffs, no Cascadia Cup - not even a Canadian Championship to show for their months of endeavour.

Being capped at that level, Plata’s value skyrockets in the eyes of his former employers, LDU Quito. MLS rules, however, have given Toronto the right of first refusal, and Plata wants them to pick up his option.

I wrote something up about the TFC Academy II CSL Reserve game played in Kingston on Saturday. I posted it in the TFC Academy thread in the Canadian Soccer section of the forum, but may as well add it to the "TFC blog" thread, even though the rest of the blog isn't TFC related. :)

Here's my writeup (http://supportlocalsoccer.blogspot.com/2011/09/kingston-prospect-fc-1-tfc-academy-ii-9.html) about the game. I don't have any of the names from either side (since numbers don't match up with the CSL Rosters or anything else that I could find), but I'm hoping to be able to update it with more details.

Here is my most recent piece for them regarding how the the character Owen Hargreaves has shown in achieving a comeback to the top flight in English football is to be commended but that this perception I feel should be tempered by the lack of character I think was on display a decade ago in choosing to turn his back on Canada to play for England.

Good question. off wallowing in what the fuck's the point land would be my own answer.

anyway, here's an article where I depress myself by looking at the options for Canada at the centre forward position.

I think that Winter has got it right.
Some time off, followed by some time for practice.
Obviously the focus will be on the CCL match and not Philly.

Given that Dallas have been suffering from exhaustion, a fresh team could be the best offense. It might help to know that Dallas has given their players 4 days off.

Thank you for this! This was the best thing I've read all season.

I stopped reading newspapers because quite frankly all they write is negative bullshit. Is there a reason why your recent strips are black and white?

tictoc
10-30-2011, 02:56 PM
The main reason is time. Believe it or not, colouring adds quite a bit to it. I've found that it takes me about half the time to do them in just black and white.

And with the extra time, I would like to do more strips, more often.

So right now I'm experimenting with it. Of course if the strips aren't working as well, that kind of trumps everything and I'll go back to colour.

A second argument is that we can achieve what the Montreal Impact failed to do in 2008-2009: beat Santos Laguna.
That's exactly what I said yesterday. :D

Never forgive Teal. I believe he was going to play for Canada until the US gave him a shot and that is what changed his mind. I don't think he would've been a large piece for us (or will be for the US) but he would've brought some unique qualities to the player pool.

honestly, im growing tired of it.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/924861-5-major-problems-with-the-mls

how can you say you don't support the league and then give it flack? this doesn't come off as "here's why i dont watch it", it comes off as "here's why the league will never make it"

what's the fucking point? the only thing i ever read is a reminder that MLS isnt EPL, la liga, serie a, or bundesliga (in case we hadnt noticed). im sorry, i just read shit like this everywhere. im thinking of starting up a campaign to try and shoot down this ignorance. anyone else be with me?

here's a very rough excerpt from an article im writing for bleacher report, it's going to lead into an article called "5 things that wont change anytime soon in MLS" which is akin to the one i wrote here (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1820555)

(keep in mind this was stream of consciousness, i havent edited it since i wrote it, and i wrote it when i was pissed)

Major League Soccer: founded 1996 as part of the United States bid to host the World Cup in 1994. Since its inception fifteen years ago the league now spans two countries and saw two teams become defunct only to welcome another ten teams, with one more on the way. With its struggle to gain recognition on national level, local supporters are often questioned by media outlets, amateur bloggers, and even other supporters as to why the North American model differs so much from our international counterparts. Make no mistake about it; the league is still a work in progress, but I’d like to use this fact as my strongest counter-point.

Where the critics make their strongest stand is the comparison of the leagues quality to other top tier leagues in England, Spain or Italy. It is the first point of contention, and ultimately the loudest. This is an unfair comparison to make, but it’s made regardless. The first reason is due to the vast head start these leagues have on MLS. The second is due to the widespread fame and fortune that comes with that head start. In addition to this, many of the world leagues MLS competes against don't have a major market rival, let alone 4 (NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL) of them, each with as equally wide a head start, and the television deals that go with them.

The issue with criticism of the league is that most of it is unfounded, unjustified, and in no way shape or form constructive. Enter the EuroSnob: the North American fan that doesn’t understand that each league is a separate entity. They see the quality soccer as a whole, without realizing that the game itself is the sum of its parts. They will distribute criticism, and readily disown their local North American club while having absolutely no birth affiliation to the one they support overseas. The club they follow may dazzle them with a stunning flurry of passes or a shelf full of trophies, but it will never be “their” team more than the New York Yankees would be for a Toronto native because they play “beautiful baseball”. They may support them, and know the clubs history back to front, but at the end of the day, most of the vocal critics of the MLS wouldn’t have a Birmingham kit hanging up anywhere in their closet.

Instead of article after article pointing out how ass-backwards the MLS is, few, if any, offer a constructive look as to why the league is where it is, and how it can adapt to fit the model of its European equivalent without effectively self destructing in the process. They can cite a variety of reasons the league is doomed to fail, and how the league needs to adapt quickly or face destruction, yet they often overlook the fact that attendance has steadily increased league wide or that MLS has signed its highest sponsorship and media sponsorship to date.

The thing I love the most about these articles is that they will often describe how they are fans of the sport and don’t regularly watch MLS. If you don’t watch MLS, what makes you the authority on condemning the league? I’m not a fan of Serie A, so I don’t feel fit to comment on it. See where I’m going with this? The only thing writers can do at this point is remind us that North American soccer is not like football in Europe, like we somehow hadn’t noticed. The fact of the matter is that MLS has created substantial growth at a maintained pace. It has tried to ensure that the league avoids the pitfalls of its predecessor, the NASL, and it does this fighting an uphill battle to gain recognition in North America. Make no mistake about it, I’m not trying to sway your opinion on the league. If you are a fan of the European leagues, chances are you’re still a fan of the European leagues. If you wouldn’t be caught dead watching the MLS, chances are that you still wouldn’t be caught dead watching the MLS after you’ve read this. There’s no changing your mind in an argument and that’s what this is. If you want to shoot down the legitimacy of the MLS, you’re (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias_blind_spot) already (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias) shutting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_effect) down (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinction_bias) any (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expectation_bias) indication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irrational_escalation) that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_aversion) the (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mere_exposure_effect) league (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negativity_bias) might (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcome_bias) actually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactance_%28psychology%29) be (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_perception) any (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semmelweis_reflex) good (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wishful_thinking). However, if that’s the case, why are there still so many who feel the need to speak out against the league?

Those who site their love for EPL, Serie A or La Liga based off of the quality of the sport serve to only emphasize one thing: they don’t love the game as much as they love being entertained by it. Do you love watching your favourite team play the fourth string against Scunthorpe? Quality can be achieved when you’ve got a 100 year, multi-million dollar head start on us, but if you don’t love the game at every level, here’s a newsflash: you don’t really love the game.

I miss the League 2 thread. (Burton having a nice bounce back year this season btw)

It is a shame that Nana left the way he did. While I can't blame him for wanting a shorter term I do think some flack should fall on him as he and the team should've been able to find a middle ground (3 year deal?).

I don't appreciate the sarcasm Mr. Fletcher! :D

It's a known fact that Jacob "Badass" Peterson is the greatest player to don a Toronto FC shirt. It's scientifically proven. There's no "maybe" or "no he wasn't" or "you're high on crack." It's the truth.

He's number 27 because he wanted his teammates to have a slice of glory too, so he let them have higher spots!

TFC FO will never do that. They will not devalue their product.

If people can get cheap tickets to this game they will wonder why they pay expensive prices at BMO Field.

I predict CCL group stage pricing.

too late for voting, but you can always feel free to comment, either in the comments section as each player comes along, or if you want to send comments along to be included in the main piece going forward for the remaining 20 odd players, feel free to email any comments, criticism, praise and bile to me at duncanfletcher@gmail.com
