TFC v LA Galaxy Rogers Centre -Video Blog

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2012/03/rogers-centre-video-blog/

With TFC’s first game of the season being one to remember in front of over 47,000 screaming fans at the Rogers Centre I kick off my first video blog of the 2012 campaign by taking a look back at the fabulous performance of TFC Captain Torsten Frings who was superlative in both defensive and offensive roles.

I also take a brief look at the “Beckham having a can of Becks thrown at him” event that led to LA’s tying goal and why that fan should be ashamed of himself. I break down the task ahead for the Reds in Los Angeles next week and I also throw in some video from the supporters section that hopefully conveys what it was truly like to be part of a very special evening.

Hey I was invited on my friends radio show in Ottawa and here is the podcast. I come on about 15min in to talk about the game at the Rogers Centre and MLS in Canada. Very brief, I had so much prepared and didn't even talk about what I wanted to. Hopefully I don't sound like an assclown and I did justice for footy/TFC.

TFC Off To The Semi Finals – Galaxy v TFC Video Blog

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2012/03/tfc-off-to-the-semi-finals-galaxy-v-tfc-video-blog/

In this post game video blog I celebrate a famous away win for our Reds versus Los Angeles Galaxy that has incredibly sent off our club to the semi finals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

I also heap deserved praise on the `Men of the Match`in Kocic, Soolsma and Ryan Johnson respectively, I take a look at the successful, if dangerous tactical approach Aron Winter took and I ask the question if its too early to pray for a snowstorm in late March.

Comments always welcome and appreciated.

Weird thread is weird.. but, anyway.. =)

I remember when you switched to using no colour, except for the jersey red, that I had thought it neat.. as I made the connection that it was in corresponding with it being off-season. That said, I was looking forward to full colour returning, when the league began.. but I can understand if it's a little more difficult to poop these out, with so much more detailing and I don't think it's terribly missed. Guess I was slightly let down to see there wouldn't be such a clever contrasting (worth noting that it's a little difficult to make out the Vancouver and Montreal fan characters, without the colour.. even if the badge is somewhat shaped as a hint and with you consistently using the same characters).

Had only wanted to mention this as food for thought, really. I have still thoroughly enjoyed your strip, so I leave it for you to consider.

I considered moving back to full-color when the off-season ended, for the reasons you point out. I look back at the ones from Season 5 and admit that they seem more fun.

The only reason I haven't gone back is time. Maybe I could do colour once a week... that might be a good compromise.

Thanks for your thoughts. I always appreciate the input.

Sounds good.. but they'll be fine, either way. Neat knowing that I had it right, with the whole off-season colour contrast effort.

^ Based on this report I'm not looking forward to what Santos Laguna counter attack can do to us. Especially since San Jose just beat us on the counter twice Saturday.

Hopefully Ryan Johnson will be up top on the right. I do like the fact we may be able to exploit their left back position with some wing play with Ecks and Johnson. Also on set pieces and going up in the air Johnson and DK may be able to capitalize.

The Champions League Run Comes To An End For TFC

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2012/04/the-champions-league-run-comes-to-an-end-for-tfc/

In this post game video blog I try and bring some perspective to the end of TFC's Champions League journey that ended Wednesday night in northern Mexico by not only looking back at the game but also at some of the better memories that this entire adventure brought us, everything from two rainouts, Plata, the Rogers Centre and Robbie Keane getting stopped cold among other great memories.

I also lament the continuing defensive frailties that this club has not yet properly addressed.

That's the best piece I've read on TFC in a long time Darlo. Written by anyone not just bloggers.

The problem with corners though is that it seems that more half the time the kick is short or long. Most of the time it is short it isn't by design either, the player simply isn't kicking it far/high enough. When we get a corner we really need to get the ball in a dangerous area where our players can actually get to it.

I'm more forgiving when it comes to crosses (though we should still get more chances out of them). Crosses are often on the run, with only one or two targets in the box.

If they aren't able to hit 5 or 6 guys in the box with a dead ball on a corner how can you expect them to connect with one or two on the run?

thanks stoufville , and yeah, corners have been consistently poor, and I feel like it's always been that way for TFC, when was the last time we had a reliably good corner taker? as for crosses, it's definitely harder, but the more targets you can have, the easier it gets. the recent uber defensive formation is necessary at the back, but we need to get a bit of balance back there, frings and or cann coming back should help the defence stand on it's own two feet so we can committ more to the attack. hopefully.

http://www.canadiansoccernews.com/content.php?3063-Smoke-and-fire-at-Toronto-FC

So with some reluctance, this is what’s being suggested now:

All of this is based on conversations I’ve had with several MLS and TFC sources.

It’s being suggested that there is a fatal conflict between Paul Mariner – and those within the organization that have a MLS or English background – and Aron Winter, along with the Dutch thinkers. There is a personality conflict involved, but the root of the issue is about player personal decisions.

For simplicity sake let’s call the divide the 4-3-3 idealists versus the MLS pragmatists.

The MLS pragmatist’s suggestions are being mostly ignored (either literally, or being brought in only to rot on the bench) while players that the 4-3-3 idealists favour -- that the MLS pragmatists have no time for -- are consistently starting.

More at the link. Looks like there's a rift in the front office and some serious differences in opinion. Could get ugly.

It sounds like a classic old school vs. new school mash up. One is a little bit country and the other is a little bit rock 'n' roll.

Paul Mariner is the old school, 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 guy. I dont know exactly what formation that Mariner was used to coaching in New England or what his preference was at Plymouth Argile.

Aron Winter is the new school, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 guy.

So, maybe they could meet half way and play the formation that they both could agree on that has width and style. Like the 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1. So with that said they need to find two defensive midfielders and a centre back.

That is the stuff about MLSE that really pisses me off, scouting has nothing to do with your cap, you can spend $100m on scouting if you wanted to, why are they not spending just a BIT more, $500k TOPS, and scouting more in S. America, Africa and Asia?

Meh......didn't Rollins say basically the same thing just before the season started?

Yeah, he's been saying it ever since the Ives article during the draft. He's also said on the podcast that it is just rumblings, and he has no solid proof. It might be a case of where there is smoke, there is fire, or (especially in Duane's case) it could be just an example of blowing smoke.

In either case, if there is a rift, I would expect Mariner out the door, not Winter. Mariner was brought in to handle MLS trades and the draft, he wasn't brought in for his coaching resume.

The thing that speaks against a rift being serious, is that Mariner turned down the chance to run the whole Revs operation. One would think that if things were really unmanageable in TFC-land, he would have jumped at the chance.

I would expect a little dismay at the managerial level with results like these. I'd expect finger pointing the more people in charge at that level. One thing must be said in the talk of the Winter/Mariner team- Mariner gave Winter a record number of options in MLS last year to go on. That takes some doing. And a sizable amount of bad luck added.

Why I feel a Liverpool friendly would be a HUGE mistake for TFC

The most annoying thing about this reported friendly is that our league match was moved. Moved to a date where we could be missing 5 or more players to national team duty.

So basically the club is telling the fans that money generating mid-season friendlies are more important than giving TFC the best chance possible to make the playoffs.

Of course if the current league form continues maybe that September game against Chicago will be meaningless anyways.

It's not just about money, it is about PR for the team and the league. If we can get a few more EPL/Europe only viewers to come out that is good for soccer which is good for us long term.

There will be a day when that cap is $20m+++ don't you want that sooner than later?

Why are you defending this move? Its bad for the team.

Not really defending it, and you are right that these should be done at the end of season, the same way that Liverpool et. al. do it, but there ARE some positives to it and although I love TFC, we do have to think of what is best for MLS because without a league there is no team.

I think people here think TFC is more popular than it is. The wife of my son's ball hockey coach works for MLSE and she doesn't know the coaches name, she said last Saturday morning "Well they are missing that really good player of theirs aren't they?"

She is not dumb, she is very into sports, she just doesn't give a crap about TFC and has NEVER been to a game. Her son plays soccer and hopefully will start to get into TFC but they need to get new people in the stands.

It isn't just about the Euro fans, but also about the VERY casual soccer fan who watches only a few world cup games and some championships.

Hell, go out and ask 100 people who is playing in the FA cup and I would bet 90% of they DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FA CUP IS.

At the TFC v LAG game I had people asking me if it was a friendly, people didn't even know why they were there but hopefully enough of those people had fun to buy tix for a couple of games at BMO and then maybe next year a few more and eventually seasons.

Furthermore moving the league game a while ago to accommodate this 'scouse circus means that the Reds could be out up to five players on International duty for the rescheduled Chicago game that would not be absent otherwise.

Usual preview pieces up now

Know your enemy (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/5/1/2992641/know-your-enemy-montreal-impact-meeting-the-second), looking at impact formations, form, tactics etc.
How you doin'? (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/5/1/2992540/how-you-doin-montreal-impact) q and a with montreal blogger
and a more tfc focused preview, (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/5/2/2992749/toronto-fc-montreal-impact-voyageurs-cup-may-2nd) wondering what kind of team Winter's going to put out there, will we see experimentation, or an A team and some much needed continuity?

Here are a couple.

We have more Canadian players combined than MTL and VAN, yet joined VAN in asking for the quota to be lowered. Considering development in this country, is this our achillies heel?

http://www.sportsnet.ca/fanfuel/2012/04/30/toronto_fc_tfc_mls_soccer_csa/

Winter, Johnson and Avila all claim that Toronto FC is better than the Impact. Are they nuts? Or is this strange view in light of reality actually a sign of something positive brewing? I weigh in with references to a prominent Sports Psychologist to speculate as to what may really be going on:

we parked the bus, which is ok, but really didn't do a good job of it, and can thank luck, kocic and a poor impact team for getting the 0-0. But hey, a result's a result, baby steps.

Unbearable. (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/5/6/3003196/toronto-fc-0-2-dc-united-mls-worst-start) the post game interviews really told the story of saturday's game.

but hey the academy teams both won (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/5/6/3003997/toronto-fc-academy-opens-csl-season), so that's something.

Pookie

And for that mess that you have seen over 5 years, just how much more are you paying than the average MLS ticket prices by vantage point @ BMO?

http://www.sportsnet.ca/fanfuel/2012/05/07/toronto_fc_tfc_tickets_2012_ticket_prices/

Feels good doesn't it?

Pookie
05-07-2012, 11:22 AM
As a footnote to the blog, while I compared TFC prices to average prices by vantage point it is worth noting that TFC prices are amongst the highest in the league. This is where the team's pricing per game ranks by vantage point in the league:

Club Seats - 3rd
Center Line - 2nd
Off Center Line - 1st
Corner Seats - 2nd
North End Seats - 1st
Supporters - 1st

TFC Bunkers At Home - Loses Eighth Straight

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2012/05/tfc-bunkers-at-home-loses-eighth-straight

Some plaudits for Julian de Guzman, who played very well Saturday past as TFC lost its eighth straight MLS League tilt, including four shutouts at home. I try and (unsuccessfully) understand Aron Winter's tactics plus I set up Wednesday's key fixture against Montreal in the V-Cup which might turn out to be a watershed moment for this team.
Plus some interesting video of DeRo and JdG at the end of the game.

Hall the topic of Aron Winter's praise (http://rednationonline.ca/HallthetopicofAronWintersPraise.aspx)

http://www.rednationonline.ca/Portals/0/Jeremy_Hall.jpg

When Toronto FC picked up Hall from FC Dallas over the offseason, not much was known about the fullback, who has three MLS seasons to his name already. He came in, injured, and has been working steadily to regain fitness. He’s back, now, and working towards a regular spot.

“I’m just trying to find the pace of the game,” said Hall. “It’s my first game coming back from injury and I’m still not 100 per cent fit where I want to be, especially in the position that I play in, and the way I play, I like to get up and down the field, so I still have a ways to go, but definitely a progression.”

“Physically I feel great,” Hall continued. “Fitness-wise I still think I have a ways to go. I’ve been working hard with the trainers to get back my fitness, in the gym. It’s just game fitness; I need to gain some fitness. I think there’s a couple reserve games lined up so hopefully I get some minutes.”

Thanks Oldtimer. was just coming here to post that. choice quotes from Anselmi very neatly demonstrate why he's been the problem all along.

while I'm here, here's my Canada v Cuba preview

Let's go to the Hex, oh baby. (http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/6/7/3069555/canada-cuba-world-cup-qualifying) got to pick up the 3 points here, crappy pitch, heat and concacaf be damned.

TFC Draw at home to New England 2-2

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2012/06/disappointedagain/

In what was arguably a bigger disappointment than the draw in Houston earlier in the week the Reds blow a two goal lead in the 94th minute to drop yet more points at home on Armed Forces Day.

In my post game video blog I take a look back at the disappointing draw, find some positives in the play of JdG, Koevermans, Morgan and especially Kocic and I take a look ahead to Montreal on Wednesday, a critical chance for the Reds to gain ground on Montreal. I also include some video from Armed Forces Day at BMO Field, including the memorable flyover of the two RCAF CF-18's.

Gents and Ladies,

Today's blog features a great shot of the Anselmi banner as well as some very interesting stats under Mariner's tenure vs Winter's 2012 MLS Campaign. Believe it or not, we have actually taken steps backwards in almost all categories.

As always though, not pointing a finger at him to be fired. Clearly, accountability for the mess of this franchise resides in the office of Tom Anselmi.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/fanfuel/2012/06/25/toronto_fc_tfc_2012_mls_season_tom_anselmi_paul_ma riner/

From the Blog:

2012 MLS Results Under Winter (Average)

Possession: 47.9%
Passing: 72%
Duels Won: 49.7%
Shots For: 15.9 per game
Shots Against: 11.7 per game

2012 MLS Results Under Mariner (Average)

Possession: 37.2%
Passing: 61.3%
Duels Won: 53.7%
Shots For: 10 per game
Shots Against: 13.3 per game

Aaron averaged 1.17 points per game over his tenure.

source: http://www.wakingthered.com/2012/6/10/3076591/ranking-toronto-fcs-coaches

Mariner: 0.67 or .5 points less per game.

So what's your point?

I was looking at it more from a perspective of "vision" since that was the focus in making the change and of all the talk related to "hoof ball" that we kept hearing about. Some talk about Mariner's system being better suited to MLS. Others suggest that players will respond to his approach. A decline in virtually every category... off a baseline that led to pathetic results... seems to suggest that so far, it hasn't worked.

As for PPG, neither coach should be proud of it.

For me, looking at stats and expecting immediate results is reasonable considering the goal here is to keep the pressure on the FO's organizational structure. No one is asking for Mariner to be fired based on these results.

BUT the results are a cummulative total that lead directly to our leader, T. Anselmi. I thought it was pretty clear in the blog.

i don't want to come across as pro-Mariner or anti-Winter, all i'm saying is that you didn't just post the link to the blog, you took a snippet of the blog that provided stats from 2012 and left out one, imo, important stat, and that is points per game....obviously neither of them have a good ppg avg, but i think it is fair to point out that Mariner's results vs Winter's (3 gms v 10 gms) is almost 100% better...

the reds may shit the bed in the next 7 games, but all they would need is 1 point out of the next 7 to equal AW's results...
