Tonight was the most satisfying victory of the MLS season. The boys played hard for 90 minutes all over the pitch, they didn't crack under pressure, and they were absolutely deserving of the first Trillium Cup trophy in franchise history.

Beating those bastards on their own turf was worth the wait!

That possibly was the best road match we have ever played in MLS in our existance! Even when they scored we came right back and slotted home another goal soon after.

Good win tonite , Finally against Columbus after so many close calls especially last year when Hesmer scored to tie it, and earlier this year when Borman scored and then got sent off . (I think it was Borman I forget) and they tied it up, I thought we will never beat these guys. But a win there over at the Bill Archer Stadium is awesome. Maybe this could sart of the turn around

We won, on the road, against Columbus, scored 4 and could have had 6 - so awesome :scarf:

For the game, great first half, one of the best we've played. Second we rode out luck a bit, had the usual defensive breakdowns at the back and conceded a couple of soft goals.

... and maybe playing without good players backing him up was the real explanation why JDG underperformed.

I think last year he was playing with a nagging knee injury... took a long time to recover this season (after off-season surgery), plus some setbacks with the knee. I think this has played a huge role.

Tonight the whole team was clicking most of the time (and Columbus was leaving way too much space in the midfield). Usually there were a couple of options to pass to. Makes it easier for everyone.

A bunch of things coming together for JDG IMO.

great result. If there was any doubting Winter would have a job next March, there isn't now.

But lets be honest, regular season results are irrelevant (so long as we finish above vancouver). The result of CCL matches are 100X more important than this.

De Guz has been in form of late, playing a much different style (more confident, attacking).

That's because he's playing attacking mid like he has with the CMNT instead of defensive mid with La Coruña.

And like I said in a previous post he's going to pot some goals for us now... at least 5 per season.

There is a definite change in JDG's body language on pitch since the new players came in. He looks like he is happy and enjoying himself out there. He never looked like that before.

He has been extremely positive about the team and the direction since the offseason. While there was drama in some corners, JDG was very positive and public about where he saw this team going.

Sometimes the results follow the attitude and it is great to see him contributing in positive ways.

The following are examples of his positive quotes given back in March/April of this year regarding the new system and the new coach:

“It is a style that has brought a lot success to a lot of soccer teams in the world, so to have this here in [the young players’] backyard, I think it is a great bonus for them … I enjoy playing it, I enjoy learning more about it as well, and most importantly, I enjoy seeing guys make progress, young Canadians who have something to look up to, which I never had growing up.”

“Even growing up in Canada I followed a lot of Dutch football my brother and I,” he said, “and then going to Europe I was involved in similar styles of play in Germany and also in Spain and now to come back home and have one of the most effective and attractive styles in my backyard I think it’s a dream come true.”

“I’m dying to be a part of this,” he revealed after practice Tuesday. “I’ve never had a chance to really be a part of such organized, structured football since I got here and once I’m game fit I’m looking forward to actually be a part of this system.”

“For a lot of people who are just used to seeing what they’re seeing in MLS I’m sure they’re quick to write it off,” he said, “but it’s a system that’s done well all over the world in a lot of different countries and has brought a lot of titles to the best in the world.”

on Winter... “It’s great to have his type of experience as a teacher,” de Guzman explained. “I looked up to him and watched him growing up in Canada in Europe and now he’s my coach so I think it’s a bonus for myself and a lot of guys who play in the same position to have this type of experience and someone coming from such a rich culture in football.”

Really great to see the team click from the get go the mid field just rocked with many diamonds of decent passing, Frings-JDG-Avila-Morgan-Ecks onward, every player had some decent contribution. This game above all other this year indicates positive progress. Morgan, Avila, Johnson are great additions.

the game was on GOL TV right? Many bars don't carry that but if you went into 8 bars and found nothing.... then I would suggest planning in advance. It was nice to see Winter's style and plan come together nicely on the road, where we've had such awful times. It's also good for getting players to buy in to the system. I am also impressed with the players brought in during Winter and Mariner's second movement window opportunity. Johnson, Avila, Frings, Koevermans have impressed me.

I think we can stop the turnover now and go into next season with most of these guys and the system in place. Of course we could still use two top notch defenders and maybe another striker. But we shouldn't need massive turnover going into next year. I'm happy with this bunch at 8 or 9 starting positions. The busy schedule coming up is tough but probably good for getting more games under the belts of this bunch, who are pretty new to each other. With a training camp next year, there should be no concerns about chemistry.

On to Mexico!

Totally agree. There's also accountability on the pitch. Frings will tell you when you're being lazy or not putting in the effort. Winter too for that matter. Partly why the lazy whiners like Peterson were sent packing.

I think it is fairly obvious that a transformation has taken place within the clubhouse after the roster overhaul. The central defence is still suspect of course, but overall, TFC has been playing with a greater sense of urgency and fluidity, and the team now poses several offensive threats compared to our anemic attack earlier in the season.

Absolutely, as I noted before I was in a chinese restaurant, in Toronto, watching vancouver, a midst other STH's, wondering which city I lived in?? :scarf:

I think JDG played great both ways yesterday, also some good defensive stops etc., was often very deep to pick up easy passes from our defence (sometimes even farther back than parts of the D to start plays, to cover the D against possible turnovers & counter-attacks), and switched off alot with Frings & Avila.

How much of his recent performances relate to his knee injury recovery? We know he had to ice it for most of the season.

Alot to do with the lingering injury, and also with better interplay between the whole team. BTW, I fully expect some more stinkers from JDG & the rest of the team, as they are still learning to play together & will still be inconsistent from time to time. The defence is still iffy as we know, so if there's a game where they can't score with ease (like they did against the Crew), then we will be in for a nail-biter.

Eck's wing was often way too open last night BTW, especially in the 2nd half. Does Winter seriously want him to go so far into the middle that he's practically stepping on the CB's toes, and often a DM there as well? Is there that little trust in the CBs? (Understandable perhaps, but still dangerous.) Or does Ecks just forget positioning & open wingers sometimes, especially as everyone gets tired in the 2nd half? Still a great player of course -- but very interesting that Morgan played about as well defensively last night (on average) as Ecks -- IMO. I never would have expected that. Ecks still better at getting into the triangles on the attack however -- although Morgan also had some good runs, especially in the 1st half.

Hopefully the win is the sign the TFC matures as a group. DG could have been MoM. Soolsma did all the right things. Eckersley defensively seemed too arrogant, and was often beaten 1 on 1. Morgan was caught out of place a few times at the beginning, but settled in later on.

My $0.02 from last night:

1) Is JDG doing a reverse Samson? He cuts his hair, shaves his beard, and he dominates.

2) What's the over/under on "Extra from 'Planet of the Apes'" jokes made by TFC fans last night about Heineman from Columbus? 525.5 sound about right? Done and done!

3) I loved the bemused looks on the faces of the new players like Frings and Koevermans-and Winter for that matter- when someone handed them the Trillium Cup after the match last night. Sort of a "We get a trophy for this?" face.

Can't wait to make the drive from the B-Lo next week-with a stop at Club Italia in Niagara Falls for a tournament.

In this post game video blog after Toronto FC's somewhat historic win away in Columbus to notch their first road win of the season in MLS I finally get a chance to bring out a prop I have been wanting to display now in this space for a long long time.

I also take a brief look back at the game, I discuss what might be the best stretch of games we have yet to see from Julian de Guzman and what might be behind this renaissance. I also take a look at the goal de Guzman scored and try and explain how the goal itself was a true microcosm of the game. And I take a look ahead to the Champions League return on Tuesday in Mexico City.

Unfortunately we couldn't get the boys to come celebrate with us post game, would have made that trip perfect :D.

Any word on severity of Freis injury?

Yes he is,born in Hamilton.
But he'll probably play for Serbia, or Japan, or Ghana.

As if that would be an indication on how good the kid is.:hide:

Sums things up sadly. Coaches tend to push their own players or those that are recommended to them in an old boys network sort of way through the provincial and national team systems so talented players can sometimes fall between the cracks of the CSA's national program. Having three pro teams doing most of the elite player development should eventually improve things.

can someone explain to me how the addition of Frings reminded JDG that he should not loft it into Row 32 with every shot? there's a train of thought here that i'm just unable to follow.

If you'd been watching, you would know perfectly well that Frings has taken over the duties of launching every shot into Row 32 (not that I'm unhappy with Frings' play, just sayin'...)

His non-field goal into a crowd in front did lead to our first goal.

odd game, glad we came out on top also glad "The koevs" is back and has dropped some weight(did you see him jump the adverts:michael:). I think Fringes needs to do the same, just because he's Torsten Fringes doesnt mean we should let him play with a gut.

Overall the team is playing some really good football.......Keep it up boys.:scarf:
