Qatar could rack up $220bn bill to host World Cup (http://www.arabianbusiness.com/qatar-could-rack-up-220bn-bill-host-world-cup-419158.html)

Speaking during a summit for investors in Munich, Ritter said $48bn will be spent to build air-conditioned stadia, $77bn will be spent on facilities for soccer fans and players from all over the world and $45bn will be allocated for developing Lusail City.

Yikes.

Yikes.

Not surprising. I'm sure there is currently little or no infrastructure in place.

To host a World Cup ? Not many places do have that. Much of the money will be spent on air conditioned facilities and transportation.

The linked article would have one believe that they're turning the place into a freaking theme park / entertainment complex.

Read : Giant Las Vegas.

Nobody seems to be talking about the LIQUOR LAWS....there's no drinking at stadiums, no pubs, and you can only drink in small private members only establishments.....anyway very few Europeans or North Americans will be going anyway...

I'm not so sure about "very few Europeans will be going". I think we'll see more Europeans in Qatar in 2022 than we saw in Saouth Africa 2010.

Also, its been rumoured that Qatar will relax the drinking laws for the tourney. They aren't going to pass up the chance to rake in money from drunk infidels. :) Today you can buy alcohol in the country, but its expensive and sold in upscale hotels and the countries one liquor store, which you need a permit to by from.

The WC will be inside a big compound. The only thing for us foreigners to do will be to go to games and drink in our hotels. Hey I'm liking the sound of that!

I'm curious to know how much Qatar "Paid" to get the World Cup in the first place. Is there a article on that?
