Although their friendly against England was cancelled because of the London riots, Netherlands benefitted as previous leaders Spain were beaten by Italy to lose their place at the top.

SSG - I wonder how those interviews go...

"so, Connie, what are your aspirations ?"
*giggle* "um, what ?" *twirls hair*
"Your aspirations... your dreams... what would you like to do ?"
"what ? you mean like, right now ?"
"no, not right now, when you're older... would you like to be a doctor, a lawyer... something like that ?"
"oh", *giggle* "I dunno...."
"maybe you'd like to be a fashion designer, a hair stylist, or own an international business ?"
"um, what was that last one again ?"
"own an international business ?"
"um, yeah, that one... that's what I want to do" *blows bubble*

Defender Iro finally adjusting to TFC system (http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Defender+finally+adjusting+system/5296997/story.html)

This story brings me a little hope about Iro. It's nice to see he realizes he's been crap in games, but that he's willing to do the work and buy into the system. Attitude wise I've liked him since he joined TFC (what can I say, his 'real city' comments about Columbus was enough for me to like the guy) and would love for him to work out for us.

Not sure if this TFC - Dallas preview has been posted....

http://tfcpics.com/articles/44-previews/233-tfc-v-dallas-preview

Aron Winter will be in charge of his 35th match this season (27 MLS, 4 NCC, 3 CCL so far) and believe it or not, this will be the most number of matches of any TFC manager in a single season !! (previous high = 34 by Carver in 2008).
Assuming he is still in charge ... by the time we reach the Tauro match on 20th September, Winter will equal the highest total of matches managed by any TFC manager (John Carver 40 - 34 in 2008, 6 in 2009) and will be on target for 46 by the end of the season (more if we do well in CCL).

Explains a lot about this team to me!!

TFC reports healthy squad (http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2011/08/23/tfc_dallas_cl/)

Excellent news...

We should see Frings-Koevermans & the rest of the starting squad out there tonight...

With everyone healthy....

Question: Do you start Frei or Kocic...

Frei - coming off an injury layoff...
Kocic - playing well while spelling off Frei...

I'd start Kocic, he's on a roll and Frei is still a little sore.
I'd ease Frei back in with one of our meaningless league games.

Some reader posted a rather humorous comment on this CBC article:

Sounds like it could be written by someone from this board!
Toronto FC faces crucial Champions League test (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2011/08/24/sp-tfc-dallas.html)

Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd., Canada's pre-eminent leader in delivering poor quality sport and entertainment experiences to fans, continues to set the bar for disappointment and inadequacy. However, with current President and CEO Richard Peddie, 63, set to retire at the end of 2011 after 13 years at the helm, concerned fans are asking the question "can this standard of unparalleled failure be maintained?"

"When Richard took over in 1998, we were simply a two-team, one venue organization without any demonstrable measure of success," said MLSE Chairman Larry Tanenbaum. "However today, under Richard's guidance, we are proud to say we have evolved into a four-team catastrophe, with three venues, broadcast on three networks across three professional sports leagues. He will be missed."

Executive Vice-President & Chief Operating Officer Tom Anselmi has tried to ease fan unrest by reassuring them that neither the MLSE, nor its franchises, will deviate from the current trajectory. "Our vision and core values of ambivalence, shame, and underperformance are bigger than Richard or myself, and will remain entrenched in our highly lucrative enterprise."

Things haven't always been so rosy for the University of Windsor graduate. In the 1999-2000 season, the Leafs 33-year run of mediocrity was marred by a 1st place finish in the Northeast Division, and conference finals appearances in both 1999 and 2001. When asked about these disturbing results, Peddie became visibly uncomfortable. "I was new to the position and I was still trying to find my way," he lamented. "I think the important thing to do here is to look forward. The Leafs are out of playoff contention, as they have been for the last few years, and I don't think the Raptors could be managed any worse. Their record of losing is really a testament to our steely will and determination. And as for TFC, they've never made the playoffs, ever. My point being, the lack of results speaks for itself."
