Canada's going play some real "powerhouses" to get into the next round.

St. Kitts?
St. Lucia?

Only Puerto Rico would offer anything at all, and it would be pretty well NASL/USL level players.

Fantastic draw for TFC after being down 2-0. An even better draw for Canada in World Cup qualifying.

Meanwhile, from Vancouver:

Los Angeles Galaxy and U.S. international star Landon Donovan put on a counterattacking clinic Saturday to lead his team to a convincing 4-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer play at Empire Field.
It was the Caps' worst loss of the season – a harsh expample of what can happen when the best team in MLS plays the worst.

They need a player like Aleman to help neutralize the LA attack. Hopefully next year he'll be good enough.:poke:

nice to see Vancouver lose big time! hahaha.

They've done worse under Soehn than under Tator Tots.
Fewer points per game under Soehn.... fewer goals scored per game under Soehn... more goals against per game under Seohn..... And the players are all Soehn's players. It's not like Winter walking in and having to deal with Preki and Mo Jo's players.

^ The game was actually a lot closer than the score suggested. In the first half Vancouver pressed LA pretty hard and the skill of guys like Chiumiento showed through. It was nil-nil after 45 minutes.

However, in the second half the vacouver midfield got tired and that exposed a terrible backline (their defense is comparable to ours). It kept getting worse as they threw more guys forward in the hopes of evening the score.

If Vancouver can upgrade their non-core, career MLS guys, next year they will be a long way towards improving. But the foreign signings are all pulling their weight which is a pretty good jump start for year one.

Thoughts from last nights game.

remarkable how different we looked when de guzman went off. very interested to see how him, dunfield and frings fit together.

all in all, a great comeback, very enjoyable.

yeah I read that Vancouver was pretty good in the first half and the highlights showed lots of first half chances.

But it's funny how we've been hearing all year about how "close" Vancouver is in every game... yet they still are the worst team in points in the league.. and getting worse since Soehn took over (not progress).

A far cry from what people said at the start of the season -- that Vancouver would finish above Portland and TFC and likely make a run for the playoffs.

i think having the three games in Toronto might be a good idea for some consistency at the beginning of this qualifying period: same city, same stadium, same pitch, same fans. Focus on developing the team not entertaining different cities.

As mentioned above, if we make it through, there will be more games to spread the love around.

Also, playing on field turf probably isn't a good thing, so that excludes Vancouver unless you want to play in a little stadium like Swangard. Edmonton is field turf. Maritimes are field turf I believe. Montreal has grass, but Saputo Stade is being renovated this fall so it wouldn't be ideal.

BMO Field still is the best stadium in the country for football.

I don't like that phrase to be honest.

I always found it to be nothing but a bitchfest.

But, I still think if you have a national team it should be playing across the Nation.

Also it will be cheaper for Canada to play in Toronto (at BMO field aka National Soccer Stadium) than anywhere else in Canada.

Does England play all their home games all over England? I think it is common for national teams to play in one city only.

It all depends from country to country,England play only an Wembley Stadium, while Germany plays almost every time in different city.

If players prefer BMO than so be it,it might not be a perfect solution, but lets face it,it's not that whole nation will go crazy,V's and few soccer enthusiasts will be pissed and that's very much it.

I hope for this 3 games we will be able to build some home support for our boys that we can carry on for the 3rd stage when we play teams that will have good support no matter where we play.

Yeah, I remember reading about what a group of geniuses Vancouver had assembled, that they would use their NASL base to come out strong this year like Seattle did when they moved up, and that they would probably make the playoffs in year one.

What I see is angry supporters, a disjointed team, and a disfunctional front office.

Firing Tater Tots angered the supporters (who were already angry over ticket policies) and actually made the team regress.

Teams with national stadiums tend to play their games there. Sometimes they'll take friendlies on the road if the demand is there or the opposition in a qualifier is unlikely to draw much of a crowd.

Toronto is the centre of the universe, ask anyone outside of Canada to name a city or to name the nation's capital. You won't get many answering oddawa!

Toronto is the only city right now with a SSS with Grass that isn't getting ready to be upgraded.

I'd love games to be played in a few different places, but Edmonton, Vancouver, and Montreal aren't really equipped right now. Footballers deserve grass. For Rugby based games Turf I can understand it's a very harsh game style when you play so many games they way that they do.

It's also not has bad on their bodies as they aren't playing for 90 minutes full blast on it with the same kind of foot work. Yes American football players are playing hard, but they don't play both offense and defense, and the plays are fairly short, you run for a period get knocked down and then everything is reset. The most any one player will run in a play really is 100 years. For a footballer someone like Frings might run from the edge of the box to edge of the box and then back again on the counter most of that twisting, and turning and doing so sharply. So Grass is the ideal. (Though even for CFL and NFL Grass is I'm betting better to play on)

I think that is becoming more and more the standard. Which is nice. Seattle and Vancouver were mistakes to give them permission, New England is working on the issue, and I'm sure eventually they'll be on grass. I'd hope Portland will eventually be on Grass too.

Seattle should be ashamed of them selves for the pitch they play on. Either the owners need to work with the seahawks, or they need to get a new stadium. I'd rather deal with Pointy Ball lines on Grass then crappy turf with only football lines.

Oh well, see you guys in September.

Pretty sure for the St. Lucia game we'll have plenty of opposition supporters in the stands - as small as St. Lucia is - I'm sure they'll get the Caribbean support behind them in this city, which is considerable.

Hosting Canadian international matches in this city is always a double-edged sword. I almost wish some of these matches were in Regina - or Nunavut (Round 3 games especially)

Interesting that the last time we actually qualified for the World Cup, we played the deciding match in St. John's in April (opposition was Honduras). If the powers that be had a collective brain in their heads, they'd actually put some of these qualifiers in cities other than Toronto where we would be guaranteed a "home field" advantage. And I say that as someone who lives in Toronto.

Not saying this in regards to the 2nd round games, but I fully expect some of the 3rd round games to be spread around (not in Montreal, hopefully)
