It'll be the entire new midfield that will elevate the team.

I'm starting to wonder if De Guzman not playing is some sort of punishment, but he is allowed to play in non league games.

Wasn't his last match the NCC match v Vancouver?

What I really think is that he is physically done. Some players just break down faster than others. Wouldn't surprise me if he plays today and we don't see him for a month, again.

The guy would have retired already if he wasn't making so much money.

JDG always played good in CCL,teams are not that physical as MLS and players are more skilled and tactical educated than MLS players so he can use his skill, while in MLS soccer lumberjacks usually use their size to push the player of the ball, regardless if they will comit foul or not.

It will be very interesting to see if 4-3-3 works in CCL.

I think (hope) that it was just that sportsnet was fully booked on their regular channels, so bumped it to setanta. sportsnet has the rights, and I think I saw somewhere the second leg is on one of sportsnet's regular channels. after that who knows.

anyway here's my match preview for tonight, where i predict viator will be the latest partner through the revolving door into Andy Iro's Centre back baptism of fire. (http://www.wakingthered.com/2011/7/26/2293690/toronto-fc-v-real-esteli-biggest-game-of-the-season-again)

Reading that de Klerk article about believing in the system will draw the ire of many but I'm happy to hear that they're going to stick to their guns.

JDG 'Unplugged" (http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/07/27/unplugged-julian-de-guzman-on-his-commitment-to-toronto-fc/)

“It is a very unusual system for this league. It is one that will definitely not dominate the league just after one season… this is something that nobody really expected to happen overnight. But this season has been a huge learning experience — not just for ourselves but also for Aron and Bob … You don’t find a 4-3-3 in Major League Soccer but, for myself, it is great to have it at TFC.

“When I look at the young guys, like Oscar [Cordon] or Keith [Makubuya] or Doneil [Henry] or Ashtone [Morgan], getting their chances to be a part of such a great system, and see these young guys learning every day — imagine in a couple years once they have this system down

“It is a style that has brought a lot success to a lot of soccer teams in the world, so to have this here in [the young players’] backyard, I think it is a great bonus for them … I enjoy playing it, I enjoy learning more about it as well, and most importantly, I enjoy seeing guys make progress, young Canadians who have something to look up to, which I never had growing up.”

Also, some interesting stuff here

http://www.canadiansoccernews.com/content.php?2043-Aleman-is-a-Whitecap

I'm inclined to agree with this:

"The knee jerk reaction in Toronto will likely be that the Reds gave up too much for an average player in Dunfield. There is legitimacy in that criticism, but it is also premature to assume that Aleman will be an impact player as a pro. No one thinks he’s ready to make the jump to first team football yet and world football is littered with players that were much more fancied than Aleman that flamed out.

It’s unlikely Toronto would have gave him up for Dunfield if there wasn’t a fallout over the commitment letter. As it stands, however, he was highly unlikely to return to the Reds. In that light, Toronto can be seen getting something for what was likely going to be nothing. Should the club have held Aleman to the same standard as it does the rest of its academy players? Should they even have those standards? Those are questions that can be answered separately from evaluating the trade. They did and they do – time will tell if it’s the right pathway."

I guess we can't claim the "system" is a product of MLSE marketing now can we?

I personally did not like the release of the three players from the TFC Academy, I think it only leaves the door open for others to do the same. TFC are assuming that noone else can do what they can and that attitude led to another previous TFC player to leave for the Whitecaps. Russell Teibert.

I just hope that the other two players will eventually be able to sign with either the Impact Academy or the Whitecaps Residency program.

If you listen to the interview RNO did with Tiebert he sad he left for Vancouver because they had a permanent residency and it was too difficult traveling from Niagara to Toronto several times a week. It had nothing to do with quality or or assumptions, it was all about logistics.

Would have been interesting for him to be asked if re-negotiating his contract would be fair, given his fitness struggles. No doubt, he would have been very careful in his wording.. but I would be curious to read between the lines of his response.

With his experience and at the right price, he could be a decent piece to have.. even in his present condition/availability.

Stu Neely on giving up one goal in the u17 6-1 win:

"I was not happy at all. I don’t care how many substitutes we make, they are made to change the face of the game, provide players with rest and give others an opportunity to show their talents."

"We lost our shape, our desire to win every ball and recover - it cost us a terrible goal. I am not just focusing on this goal, but it was costly mistakes, one after the other that lead to this goal and it must be corrected. We must always be seeking to improve the development process of our players."

Positive. Future TFC coach?

the CHUD working with the MLSE Corporation, in conjunction with the saucer people, under the supervision of the reverse vampires, are forcing our expectations to bed early in a fiendish plot to eliminate the feel of VICTORY!. . . . and also the meal of dinner.
