I am offering a pint to the person who comes closest to describing exactly what kind of game Frings and Koevermans have against Dallas.

It could be minutes played, assists, cards, general impact on flow of play, complaining to refs, you name it....if you call it right, better than everyone else in this thread, I will buy you a pint. Only predictions for both players are eligible.

You should assume that judging will be arbitrary. This is MLS after all.

The phrase "tear this league a new one" will result in automatic disqualification.

Good luck.

Danny Koevermans will score a goal in the game for us.
Torsten Frings will have a decent game, nothing special at all though.

Koevermans will be quiet for the majority of the first half, sparks up in the second half. His strength will be in distribution to Soolsma and Plata.

Frings will have one good shot on net, but will otherwise be a simple passer in the midfield.

We draw this match 1-1

There is absolutely no way I will win your pint. I think if I even tried to do so it would so jynx the team and those particular players performances that I would never forgive myself. Soooooo....

I will play it safe and conservative and say I am HOPING for the best performance from a TFC player I've seen all season by one or more of these players. I would hope to win this next game. A lot. Not by a lot just hope a lot.

Dallas wont know what to expect so wont have the advantage that the last bunch of teams have had in exploiting our weaknesses.

The new dynamic could really improve our chances at blindsiding Dallas, and as long as the plays dont become too predictable and we dont backpedal on a lead we may even win.

Im not expecting a loss, whatever.

On July 20th, BMO Field will be sold out. The atmosphere will be reminiscent of the good old days. The excitement surrounding the debut of our heralded designated players will be palpable in the stands.

TFC's lineup will feature our best starting 11, minus Eckersley, who will be serving a suspension. Torsten Frings will quickly emerge as the greatest field general in the history of the squad, breaking up plays, initiating counter attacks, directing traffic, and instilling confidence in his teammates. Danny Koevermans will impose his menacing frame in the offensive third of the pitch, outmuscling opposing defenders, holding his ground, and distributing with precision. TFC creates a few chances in the first half but fails to convert. The score will be nil-nil at half time.

In the second half, the squad seems to have more cohesion, and begins to dominate possession. Plata gets fouled just outside the box. Frings steps up and delivers a world class free kick into the top corner. The crowd goes wild, as TFC takes a 1-0 lead. TFC continues to press, and several minutes later, JDG spots Koevermans open and delivers a perfect long ball, which Koevermans controls with ease, then turns, and blasts a cannon into the far side to take a 2-0 lead.

At this point, the supporter groups have already started songs and chants dedicated to their new found heroes. The last 20 minutes of the match is a wonderful chorus of joy and celebration, marking the beginning of a new era. TFC is one of the big boys now.

Ensco, I prefer Heineken, so you'll have to buy me that pint outside the stadium. :D

Frings will enter the arena through a giant hoop of flames, setting off all the fire alarms, noone will be upset because it will be 50c outside. Then he will crush every single player in Dallas' Team providing Koevermans with 3 assists and scoring with the hardest shot ever taken from the opposite end of the field.

FCD has two pretty good defenders back there. I’d say we can expect an industrial but unspectacular performance from Koevermans for his first game out. I think they said he was further away from full fitness than Frings so maybe a 65th minute sub will be seen as well.

Frings will win the ball a lot but will probably have some issues linking up going forward with new teammates.

Here it goes...

Both play the full 90 because we need a win and the pressure from the FO to spark more interest in the team. Koevermans will be frustrated at the lack of good service he receives from Soolsma on the wing, but will be pleased with Plata. He'll get a good chance to score, and it will result in a good save. Other than that he will be relatively quiet but show that he will be a force in MLS. Frings will breakup some plays, have a few beautiful touches, but will look a bit lost at the lack of skill on both teams and at that he hasn't quite exactly got the MLS style down just yet. I think he'll take a set piece or two and have the best two efforts off a set piece this year (maybe aside from Sturgis off the crossbar).

The team will be lifted by the on field presence of Frings and Koevermans. DK will start fast and aggressive as will Frings who will be promptly yellow carded. The crowd will react and momentum will build around the pitch and in the stands.

Dallas will be taken aback a bit. Plata will start making deep runs and cutting in looking for DK. This will result in a goal in the first half.

The second half will start slower and TFC will start to fall into it's regular 2nd half lull. Frings will try to up the tempo as he observes the team do what he has been warned they do. The other players will press harder and we will almost concede on the counter. The rest of the game will be tense and we will just squeeze by with the 1 nil win despite late pressure from Dallas.

or something like that

Frings and Koevermans will play most of the full 90. Both players will recieve too much attention from Dallas. Plata will be the benefactor of this and knock in 2.

Frings will move the ball well but won't be noticed much. Koevermans will come on strong early but miss a bunch of chances.

We lose 2-1 on a Plata goal early in the second half. Dallas score the first two.

I see Frings getting booked and FREAKING out at the ref in the later stages of a hard fought 2-1 TFC win in front of a sell out crowd. Koevermans will score on a penalty for being taken down by an out-muscled and frustrated FCD defender and will play a large role setting JDG up for his first goal in....for friking ever!

That is, if JDG plays at all!

Side note: If we are going to make the play-offs (not likely) we'll need all 3 DP's to play a major role in every match from here on in.

brad

Kovermans cuts a lonely figure up front most of the game as he is getting no service from the midfield. He makes well timed runs that no one sees. We do see a bit of quality hold up play from him.

Frings looks average in the midfield. Not great, but not bad. He'll probably have the same issues most higher quality players have coming into this league. He will make passes into space where players should be but are not. He will probably get frustrated with someone at least once. I suspect he will also get a yellow card.

Frings has a solid game, with decent distribution but nothing spectacular. Koeverman doesn't start the game, but he doesn't have to, coming in for the second half, scoring 2 and giving TFC a much needed 3 points in a 2-0 win.

Frings and JDG will hook up really well this way...

In the 85th minute, with TFC up 2-0; head coach Aron Winter will sub Frings off for JDG to help kill time, insert fresh legs, and reward Frings for running his ass off all match...

At the pass, Frings will double high-five JDG perfectly, before shaking the coaches hand, and watching the club play out 5-mins and stoppage time to win it 2-0...

I think both will be highly effective players for us. I just think a bedding in period is going to happen while they get their match fitness up, adjust to the team and adjust to the league.

I thought there was talk that Koevermans wasn't match fit since he hadn't played a lot this year. He'll start but won't finish the match.

I can see Frings playing the whole match.

I see a draw. (Most MLS matches are anyway.)

Frings will come out hard, trying to make an impact on the game, and get an early yellow. He will take every free kick and corner that truly has a scoring opportunity attached to it. His game will be simple, ball winner with some simple passing options. He'll freak out on the ref late in the game, earning himself a second yellow to leave the game with 10 minutes left. No goals, no assists.

Koevermans will start the game without getting any service, and by halftime will be frustrated that he isn't getting any service. He'll come out in the second half trying to do too much himself, but allowing the wingers to get involved more as he drops deep. Finally some crosses will be coming into the box, but Koevermans will have dropped so far back, that he'll be late getting onto them. He'll get one of two clear cut chances at net, but no sure goal scoring opportunities.

I suspect we'll see something like this for a starting lineup.

Plata---------Danny K----------Soolsma
Yourassowki------------Tchani--------

Borman---Henry----Harden------Gargan

In the future I'd like to see any combination of players that keep Tchani, Youassowski, and Borman off the field.

Koevermans plays one half and scores one goal early in it. He has one other attempt at goal in the game, not on target. Frings plays a steady but not spectacular game, taking one shot that is stopped by the keeper. TFC backline with no Eckersley, gets shredded once again and we lose by 3.

No need for the initial negativity is there? whats that about?

It can happen if we utilise these DP's effectively and Winter heavily studies recent Dallas games to get an understanding of what he might be up against. Im confident that these DP's can make an immediate impact especially if theyre capable of humbling themselves and respect the much less gifted players around them. Much depends on the charisma of these two guys, Im looking forward to see how they turn out and especially looking forward to seeing how they perform in CONCACAF

Im sure the wednesday nighters will be in full voice and exuberant as ever too. The atmosphere for late midweek games in good weather is usually superb, whatever the team's performance is like.

Frings:
- hit the crossbar, get booked, complete 79% of passes, 1 assist, sport a thin black headband, will injure brek shea
DK:
- score (left corner along the deck), be subbed at the 74th minute for Gordon, will suffer 4 fouls against, be offside twice, wear red

go big or go home.

- Frings and Koverman bring back to BMO a "classic" Toronto Fc game!
- Dallas scores at the 12 minute mark to open the game
- To put Dallas on notice, shortly thereafter Frings makes a mean, tough tackle on the Dallas scorer and gets a yellow. This changes the flow of the game - the crowd is really in the game and the tide shifts in Toronto's favour
- Frings steps around a couple of Dallas players, carrying the ball up field, he finds Plata and the little guy pops it in the net!
- later on Danny Koevermans will be fed by Frings and he will slip a nice one over to Plata who scores again
- Koevermans makes one of those classic Danny Dichio clumbsy, hard, late striker challenges that results in the big K's first yellow card in the MLS. Even though the card was definitely warranted, the crowd at BMO wants the refs head

- Koevermans is subbed out early in the 2nd half when we are leading 2-1
- With about 15 minutes left, Frings makes a tough but fair challenge and ends up with a second yellow and must leave the game
- Dallas ends up beating us 3-2, with the winning goal by Kevin Hartman in extra time setting a new MLS record
- The crowd is ready to lynch the ref for Frings Red card and the reffing team leaves the field under police escort
- Frings and Koevermans wondering what the hell they got themselves into but are too seasoned to let this show in post game interviews with Andi P. or whomever does the post game interviews

- between F+K, they make enough impact for most supporters (even roogsie:)) to agree that things are looking up! Although Toronto FC has a long way to go, F+K have made their mark!

Not optimistic, but probably realistic

Koevermans - Mediocre service from the wingers for a few missed headers. Will lay-off some nice passes to the wings. 1 or 2 long range efforts wide or high. Will suffer some fouls outside the 18. Subbed 60-75.

Frings (with Ketchup, yumm) - Simple game with decent short passes. Some frustration with lack of support and does not get the ball as much as he wants. A few good mid-range passes to the wings. Will challenge for the ball often but come out with 50% or so.

Game prediction: 2-1 Toronto Win, with Soolsma and Plata scoring. There is enough quality in the mid and front to get the 2. The back is shaky unless the new CB "will tear this league apart."

Not a criticism of Nickio but does anyone know why MLS announcers always say "service" instead of "cross". Would it offend the Moral Majority to use the normal terminology within the sport for that? :angelsad2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3OWBhySR6w

Not sure why people are so comfortable with the idea of Frei being traded. Have people forgotten what season one was like on the goalkeeping front? If you have an above average keeper on a reasonable salary number it's sensible to try to keep him.

Any reference to "we" means the same thing it did on Simon's board five years ago (i.e. TFC in general or the entire TFC support).

We lose 3-0

DK is subbed out at the 70th minute and did next to nothing.

If Kocic can do the job, I think we should deal Stef. I love the guy and he's a tremendous keeper, but we need a quality, quality back line which we simply do not have.

Frei for a quality CB and Harden, Gargan and Borman for a brand new bag of soccer balls would be a fine transaction.

Frings plays as the sole defensive back in the 4-3-3, with two attacking mids. Koevermans plays between Soolsma and Plata.

The first fifteen minutes are tentative for all players, both sides trying to see what the general feel for the game will be. Dallas has greater possession early and attacks, only to be foiled by Frings on at least two attempts. Frings is given some leeway by the officials, but by the 25 minute mark has seen his first MLS yellow card.

Koevermans gets two chances in the middle of the half, but it is apparent that he is not as match fit as Frings. Plata provides energy and Koevermans puts one off the woodwork and forces a great save on the other. Just before the half, he finally nets one on a shot from 25 yards.

Koevermans is subbed out by the 60th minute. Frings goes on to play the majority of the game, perhaps being subbed after the 75th, only if he is playing as physically as he did early. Otherwise, he finishes the game.

Toronto nets one other goal, and Dalls comes back late with a goal to make life interesting. Frei slams the door and TFC come away with a 2-1 win. Frings is man of the match.

I can't see Johnson picking up the system fast enough to start, because wide forwards have defensive obligations in this system. Dunfield might slot in, but I doubt it.

More likely:

----------Dunfield/Santos/Martina-----------------------
Soolsma------------------Plata
------------Koovermans-----------------------

Plata is still a young and inexperienced player who is a bit of a liability defensively so I suspect we may not have to wait too long to see Johnson in action and that Plata will return to having more of a second half sub once the other team starts to tire sort of role. Also worth bearing in mind that with Frings and Koevermans new to the mix there isn't going to be much continuity in selection going on in midfield anyway. Fingers crossed JDG is about to leave and a major signing is about to be made at centre back.

Might as well give this a go. After the way the last two games went and Winter's obvious outright disdain for the level of performance I don't think he is going to hesitate when it comes to revamping the lineup. The season is probably effectively on the line against Real Esteli so best to use the Dallas game to get ready for that, maybe?

-----------------------Frei
---Gargan-----New Guy----Iro---Yourassowsky
-------------Frings---------Dunfield/JDG
--Soolsma-----------Santos------------Johnson
------------------Koevermans

Eckersley then replaces Gargan after he gets back from suspension assuming "New Guy" actually arrives. With JDG who knows when this never ending injury stuff will clear up? Dunfield was probably obtained as a way to get Yourassowsky back where he belongs at left back. I suspect we are going to see a Sturgis for a centre back type trade given Yourassowsky, Zavarise and academy players like Cordon would still be available as cover in central mid. An attacking central mid to provide depth is the second void on the roster that ideally might be addressed through a trade but centre back has to be the top priority and not sure who would take the obvious candidate to axe from the senior roster to free up extra space i.e. Martina.

What I would like to see out against Dallas:

-------------------Frei-------------------
--Gargan----Iro----Harden----Yourassowsky--
------------------Dunfield--------------------
-----------JDG-----------Frings-------------
-Plata--------------------------------Johnson---
---------------Koevermans---------------------

- The backline looks frightful without Ecks, but our 3 midfielders are all defensively capable to cover as needed.
- I would like to see JDG get further up the pitch, similar to the NT. Allow Dunfield to be a ball winner and let JDG and Frings ping the ball around the park
- Johnson's pace up the left allows Plata to move back to his natural right flank, should be able to provide service for Koevermans.
- From the sounds of it, Koevermans might not be fit enough to start. He only started training at the end of this week and his match fitness might not be up to par. In that case winter will have to bring him on as a sub. Preferably Santos would start upfront but again I don't know if he's fit. He is listed as having a right hamstring strain but time will tell and I'm sure his status will be released soon. If he's not fit Winter will probably end up starting Martina or Soolsma upfront again :(. Another possibility is to put Johnson upfront and put one of those hacks on the wing.

I recall reading that after the big announcement he returned home to tie up loose ends.

Let's not forget that guys like Frings and Koevermans are use to being on vacation at this time. We are essentially asking them to play straight through a season and a half. Their fitness needs to be monitored closely to lower the chances of injury or burn out as the season progresses.

Think UEFA try to get the conventional fall-spring European season format to end before the end of May these days so both players should have had a reasonable break and would probably have been in preseason training by now if they had stayed in Germany and Holland. Hopefully they both maintained a high fitness level in recent weeks and won't take long to get to full match fitness.

I don't think Koevermans will be 100% game fit for Wednesday. He can switch off with Santos. Plus, we have 6 games in the next 3 weeks. Santos has also been injured a bit. With Gordon gone, there's no way we have too many strikers. Or perhaps Winter has another place he wants to try Santos. We shall see.

I don't understand why some people want Santos to play AM.

A lot depends now on whether Winter sticks with a "point forward" 4-2-3-1 type formation. If he does Santos is really not that bad a fit as a withdrawn striker at the top of the midfield triangle. If it's more of a "point back" 4-1-4-1 (or whatever people prefer to call it) then there's no obvious role for Santos when Koevermans is playing. Long term I don't think Santos is going to be around but what happens between now and the end of the season if Koevermans can't play? Either Santos or Gordon were likely to leave with Koeverman's arrival. Both leaving is not so likely.

^I think it was always Gordon who was leaving, because Santos is an international.

Using international slots on backup strikers is expensive in this league. (Same issue with GKs. It's what caused Frei to fall to us in the draft, and limits his trade value now.)

Griffit will have the same issue if he doesn't become a starter. I would have vastly preferred the first round pick that was rumoured to be coming with Iro.

Speaking of international spots, it doesn't make much sense to use one up on a back up keeper either. That's a poor use of resources.

New Houston Dynamo acquisition Felix Garcia will postpone playing for the Major League Soccer club to finish high school. Houston traded allocation positions with Toronto FC as well as giving the Canadian team an international roster spot for two years to land the 18-year-old striker, but will have to wait for their investment to pay off.

That reads like 2009 and 2010 seasons only to me.

Point back is definitely more the traditional Ajax way of doing things so agree that it could be very much on Winter's agenda. My thinking was 4-2-3-1 is the easier system so the better way to ease all the new players in? Just got back from the community practice/game prep. Frings, Koevermans, Frei, Iro, Dunfield, Johnson weren't there, apparently they were practicing separately at BMO. It's questionable to me because this could be valuable team blending time... but then who knows what the plan is..

JDG was practicing separately with the Fitness coach, working on his knee.

Eckersley stood out, good crisp passing and positioning during the little scrimmage. Looked very composed and fit- we'll miss him this Wednesday. I can't get enough of his determination and "fight" for the ball.

Yourassowksi over dribbled a few times, lost the ball- said some swear words in French.. nothing new there.

Anyway, it's just one practice but nevertheless.

...JDG was practicing separately with the Fitness coach, working on his knee...

Doesn't sound good. Will be interesting to see if Sturgis or Yourassowsky gets used alongside Frings and Dunfield if JDG doesn't play. Also a better fit with the Maccabi Tel Aviv transfer rumour than people initially thought on the JDG themed thread.

Frings: Work his bollocks off in all areas of the field for 90 minutes, some neat passing and strong tackles.

Koevermans: has a decent game, gets a bit of service from Plata and holds the ball up well, scores the only goal of the game and gets taken off on the 85th minute with a standing ovation.

1-0 TFC

Agreed.

I'd also suspect we're not going to see too many new faces in the starting lineup. Iro, Frings, and Koevermans ... that's it.

Too many changes and we'll look like even more of a sloppy outfit than we normally do. These guys need to be phased in, otherwise it will be even more of a shit-show.

Fring and Koevermans don't need to be phased in. They read the game above your average MLS'er. Johnson might be OK, too, if he's playing wide, or as a long striker with Koevermans behind him.(Which is how they're using Hassli and Jarju in Vancouver, if the Citeh game was any indicator.)

Is this the biggest game in TFC history? Building a team is obviously a process, and you can't ever put too much stock into one game. But given the trades, the DPs, finally having something closer to Mariner/Winter/DeKlerk's "team" instead of Mo's, and the fans' unrest for some results, this game is pretty big. From this point on, there aren't any excuses.

Unfortunately, it looks like TFC will still not be close to full strength for tomorrow's match. Based on recent updates, Ecks (suspension), JDG, Dunfield, Santos, Griffit, Williams, Cann, and Bouchiba are all unavailable.

I would go with this, and bring in Johnson to relieve Koevermans, who isn't likely to last more than 60 minutes based on his match fitness.

Bah to injuries. Neither Dunfield nor JDG were listed as "out" by TFC. I think it depends entirely on where they see Frings fitting in, and whether we are going to play point back or point forward. The last little while they've played point back, so I assume they'd do the same. I also think Frings is going to be the destroyer in front of the back four, so we might see something like:

----------------Frei-------------------

Gargan---Harden-----Iro-------Borman

----------------Frings-----------------

------Soolsma----Yourassowsky--------

Martina--------------------------Johnson

-------------Koevermans--------------

Unless of course Plata is starting, then you might see him where Yourassowsky is listed, with Yourass slotting in at LB.

I love the little fella but he's only useful in the open field. He's completely useless in any set pieces...and lets be honest our sets have sucked big donkey balls all year.

With frings taking the kick I'd think we'd want to fill the box with big bodies now. Iro, Johnson (cause he's quick and athletic), Harden, Koev and Soolsma are some taller than average kids. Might actually allow us to get the occasional goal from the set.

They don't play it as a point back, they play it as a 4-2-1-2-1, with the hole player as the top of the diamond. IF we only left Sturgis in front of the back line we'd be in even more trouble.

Someone innattentive found a link of a major announcement on TFC website from like 2 weeks ago- where they announced Frings and Koevermans and started selling it as Tomorrow, everyone followed suite. So relax- the big thing this week, up until now, is the Academy expansion and Sturgis being shopped around.

Harden: But he's only been here a few days, I've been in the system all season.

Winter: (deadpan) Your point being?

Pretty heavy underdogs at home tonight:

Toronto v Dallas - 3.00 3.25 2.38

I put ten TFC, breaking my normal not betting on TFC rule.

I'm gonna say all of the new faces throw Dallas off their gameplan, and we surprisingly take it 1-0, or maybe 2-1.

TFC haven't played at home in ages, they'll be pumped with all the new players. I'm going to say 2-0.

Wow, that's basically the spine of the club right there, and they will be playing together for the first time tonight. I'm hoping they catch lightning in a bottle from what should be an energetic crowd.

I hope TSN doesn't screw up the live feed like it has so often before.

Staying optimistic- this feels like a winnable game, unlike NYRB.

Sometimes when you throw a squad of unfamiliar players together, they don't get picky with one another and they just play football. Hopefully that's what we see tonight.

2-0 TFC

I'm also hopeful playing with a well known footballer like Frings might give some of the MLS lifers on our team an added jump in their step tonight.
