Mexico's Pachuca wins on penalties

In the first half, the game seemed, for the most part, like the inconvenient mid-season friendly it was. Toronto FC's starters played, for the most part, like the little-used reserves they usually are.
And then, in the second half, they woke up and, although they lost on penalty kicks, put rare post-defeat smiles on their coaches' faces.

Toronto FC used Saturday night's friendly against Pachuca of Mexico as a test for some of the players, mostly young, who don't get much chance to show what they can do against top competition.
And they put on a good show as the teams finished regulation time 1-1 with Pachuca winning on penalty kicks 4-3 before an announced attendance of 18,079 at BMO Field.

Jeff Cunningham won't be able to sleep for a couple of nights.
The Toronto FC striker couldn't hit the target when it mattered most last night in an exhibition loss to the best team on the continent -- Pachuca of Mexico. With the score tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, Pachuca won 4-3 on penalty kicks before 18,079 fans at BMO Field. The kicks were even at 3-3 when Cunningham had his effort saved by Pachuca keeper Miguel Calero. Cunningham also missed a wide-open chance in front of the goal with eight minutes to go.
