Really shows how hard it is for someone who learned kick and chase football to adjust:

"It's a very different situation, it's how you adapt to it because if you don't adapt fast enough it's going to be a big problem, so you've to adapt fast and try to understand the system that they are playing and know how to move off the ball," Williams said.
"They play in a system so you've to always be in the right shape, so I think that's one of the biggest changes in my career, to know that you've to play that disciplined role - to know where you've to be at that point," he added.

That is going to be Winter's challenge for most of the squad.

i love Borjan's story because it mirrors my fathers. Serbian kid comes from Croatia to Canada, moves to hamilton, plays for Canada as a way of giving back. Absolute success story and Canada should be full of these.

It's starting to happen boys :)

AMEN!

"I went from Croatia to Serbia and there was a war and everything, but it's not like I'm hating them or anything, you've got to be good with everybody," Borjan said. "Here in Canada, there's Serbian, Croatian, Italian... they're all good. Canada is a peace country, when you come here, you're not here to fight, you're here to work, to try to find a better way to live, and you get new friends and everything."

Awesome. I'm glad Canada is here to accept people that want to live a better life. Immigration built our country and made it great.

My wife moved here from this dangerous and weird country called the "United States of America" or something like that. Canada was here to save her too! ;)

I applaud this. As someone who moved to Canada for a better life (and found one) I have huge respect for those who pay back the blessings they have received from being in this country.
Also, if my 'old' country came here to play Canada, since my loyalties would be conflicted, I would politely stay at home out of respect to other Canadians (although this is a discussion for another time).

Or do what some of the people at the Ecuador/Canada game did and wear BOTH flags and cheer for all goals scored.

I was at the CAN/ECU game and did a piece for CBC all about the multiculturalism vs Canadian soccer debate - wish I'd spoken to Borjan!:

Excellent piece, thanks for sharing!

Its such a complex issue for so many of us. Most of us (here in the soccer community) are either immigrants or 1st generation Canadians and if not then there's a good chance that most of our friends are immigrants or 1st generation Canadians. I'm 2nd generation, and while I root for England in the Euro and World Cup (assuming Canada isn't in it) there would be no conflict for me if Canada played England - I'm Canada all the way. It would be much more of a conflict for my grandparents (although they are no longer alive) and my parent's generation with my aunts and uncles all have different views, but for myself, my brother and all of my cousins we're firmly Canadian - even though we hold a fondness and respect for our cultural heritage.

Having grown up in a Croatian family and playing competative soccer for Croatian teams all my life i once asked my father.....given the chance to play soccer for either Croatia or Canada, what should i do?

His response.....

"We are Canadian"

Congrats to Borjan and his family.

And a Big "F You" to the likes of

Sportsnet One is showing Women's Soccer at 8:00pm tonight (according to my guide). I guess they got confused when they saw LandyCakes on the roster for the U.S.

Crozack EXACTLY man, i think it depends on the 'thankfulness' of people who come here and their 'buy in' with their adopted country. Canada is starting to 'draw back' it's stars, but how we couldn't keep Bunbury or Hoilett ( i worry he's going to commit to Jamaica is it?) is beyond me.

This isnt just a cultural thing here in Canada.
I have to blame the CSA. The structure of soccer in this country at a youth level is embarrassing.
We have one of the highest participation levels in the world when it comes to youth soccer but when it comes to developing "future stars" between thew ages of 12-16....we suck like no other.

We dont have the proper coaches or structure.....hence the CSA is to blame because they cant coordinate all the provinces into one "Canadian" philosophy.....and let them do whatever suits them best.
