Hes seriously making a fool of himself on TV while the 90% + of the world is laughing at him...i used to like Jim Rome's show, and i really dont understand how ESPN would allow someone like him, but im really not surprised and wished he would just burn himself....

Anyone feel like e-mailing him or sending him a ticket to a game ???

how can a "sports reporter" take a week off during one of the biggest sports tournaments in the world... and what does beckham have to do with euro 08? :noidea:

what does beckham have to do with euro 08? :noidea:

thats the point of it, while one of the worlds biggest tournament was held, he turned to beckham....even Sports Illustrated didnt even write a STORY, of the Euro 2008. NOTHING. they barely mentioned the winner, the only time i saw something related to futebol was on one of the 'who died, who retired" pages, where they just put "Won" spain - euro 2008...

This guy is mouth for the redneck massive and I question anyone who listens to him. If you think his homophobic banter and biggot attitude are entertaining, I think it points that racism and prejudicial tendancies aren't dead in North America and infact are thriving.

This guy basically calls a soccer a game of fairies and man-lovers. I'd like him to say that to Jaap Staam's face or Roy Keane's. I watched his segments on other sports and its ridiculous. Plus, ESPN promotes soccer, so I don't know what they're thinking. Good message "Tune in for Prime Time MLS Thurday Night Soccer....if you're a fag".

He must be a big hit in Columbus then.

it wasn't that bad by his standards, the biggest ignorance comes when he says it was Emilio who got hit in the groin and went on to score 2 goals. It was Gonzalo Martinez that got hit...nice one Nigel Reed!

You have never listened to Jim Rome.
He's not right wing or homophobic.
He's actually a big champion for anti-homophobic attitudes in sports.
sure he doesn't like soccer, because all he knows is what most US media displays...the violence from over seas....but he'll come around one day. He used to hate Nascar, now he loves it...

Word! Rome is great. Sure he's anti-soccer but he does it in a satirical way...its almost like he talks like a guy immitating someone who hates soccer. Also, he admitted in the clip to not watching it ever and not caring for it.
It's not like he claims to be the "all powerful sports god" like that fuckhead Wilbon, calling a sport "bush league"....Rome just makes it clear he does not like the sport while poking some fun at it.

I really don't care what he says about soccer, errrr football. He has a huge fanbase, and his soccer rants are part of that whole image.

Most of the time his show is hilarious, and very often his interviews are off the chart. Some of the best intervies I've ever heard were on his radio show. Evel Knievel, Joe Simpson (author of Touching the Void), Steve Elkington and others. Its one of the only shows that can have you splitting a gut laughing one minute and sitting in the car 5 minutes after arriving somewhere because the interview is too damn good to miss.

Sure, the clone thing and the jungle thing gets a bit much sometimes, but look at it for what it is, ENTERTAINMENT. Plain and simple.

I'm not go off on a rant calling him names and making unfounded accusations just because he disses soccer.

I'm oota here.

It mindless crap. Awesome. Ron artest fights a fan in the stadium. Thats passion. Awesome. This guy sucks so hard. I would never be caught dead listening to his inflated ego. Although I am guilty of listening to him to form an opinion. If you look at all the comments on youtube, not pointing directly to him, you'll see the type of person he attracts.

He sucks and you all can listen to him....freedom of speach. This guy should be beaten into oblivion. Oh wait, one of his guest tried. Awesome. He's the biggest tit on television.

Let's face it ... he is probably the typical every-man from the United States of America. Most Americans don't regard soccer as a real sport. If they aren't good at it, they don't care about it. If their league is not the best in the world, it doesn't matter.

Jimmy can stick to NASCAR and the NFL and he can think that's the "world's game" whilst we enjoy the real deal.

I can't wait to see the day when soccer is big in the USA and all these morons have to kiss our butts because we will help pay their salaries.

I have hated Jim Rome since Sportsnet used to show his show back in like 1997. He is so annoying. He tries to talk like hes 14 years old or something with all of his 'smack'. Its so irritating.

Anyway, for anyone who doesnt remember, heres Jim Rome being a tough guy.

9HNgqQVHI_8

The guy is a douchebag of the highest order and its got nothing to do with his opinions on soccer (Bob McCown hates soccer but I still think hes the best sports radio personality in Canada). Its all about professionalism, or in Jim's case, the lack threreof.

As much as I don't like him, I actually find some of his attacks on soccer a bit funny. Such as this one on soccer and internet porn: http://youtube.com/watch?v=knoFLlQ1QUY Can't help but think of Ashley Young on that one lol.

Or his burn on the Colombian riot in Cali was funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRiSCe_DCyc&NR=1

I never watch Jim Rome. I'm too busy watching Sky Sports News and BBC America. Jim is exactly what ESPN wants and needs to keep their demographic happy. Watchers of ESPN don't want soccer they want AMERICAN sports with AMERICANS winning AMERICAN games or someone elses. I've seen it a thousand times (especially during the Olympics), if an American team is in the final tey'll cover it, if not there's always World Tour Poker to air.
Soccer has no room in the ESPN home, their more likely to be put in the garage. Only thing missing from ESPN's lineup is NASCAR.

The blood type is quickly changing in America though....I would suggest that everyone read "How Soccer Explains The World" by Franklin Foer
It has some great points on Rome and folks like him in the american media.

He just made fun of soccer for the same stuff most North American sports pundits do

- Lack of scoring
- It's use of "polite" British sounding terminology (i.e. "cross" or "corner", instead of POWER PLAY(!!!) or TOUCHDOWN(!!!))
- The supposed effeteness of soccer players, hence his comment about getting injured by "an underwear model".

Guys like Bob McCown do the same thing, although he will at least give the sport mostly the coverage it deserves, (he did daily updates on Euro 08 while it was occurring).

It's just a difference of cultures. Jim Rome likes sports with lots of scoring, and contact, and general manliness It's ignorant, sure, but all he is doing is putting words to one of the many problems MLS will have to overcome to become one of the "big leagues" in North America - the sports culture.

Oh, and hello everyone. This is my first post, haha.

I stopped listening to Rome along time ago. I don't like my sports being turned into tabloid talk and crap. That's why ESPNEWS stays on and never Sports Center or PTI. Around The Horn is ok because they at least talk about the fucking sport on topic and not the bull shit.

Here is just my little thought on the sport's ability to get over in the US. This I find hilarious. I get ragged on from my friends all the time about having season tickets. I bring one of my friends to 1 game..... now he's hooked. He knows the chants and just bought FIFA 08 for his 360 to get into the sport. He LOVES it now. He's a bit more open minded and obviously took to the sport.

This other friend was giving me an unreal hard time. I just got back from a game(I think the KC game) and met my friends out to eat. This one's giving me shit about driving all the way to TO and the non scoring and all that crap. We hang out the next day and I have on Fox Soccer Report and it is on showing highlights from the Euro 08 finals. Every near goal, he responds with an "OHHHH" and was really taken back from some of the physical play. But, he just brushed it off as saying "I bet the rest of the game was rrrrreal exciting." THAT, my friends, is where the ignorance is and that is why soccer will always have a hard time getting over in America. Too little of my first friend who wants to go to more games this year and has an open mind to something new, and too many of my second friend who was a preconceived notion and won't give it a chance.

A friend of mine - a media man - tells me that Rome pulled a massive about face recently on NASCAR. Apparently he used to make all kinds of fun of NASCAR and trash the race scene relentlessly.

Then someone in a position to pull the plug on him let him know that ESPN/ABC was getting back into NASCAR coverage. Shock of shocks, Rome suddenly decides that racing is cool. My friend says he doesn't have a clue about racing and can't talk knowledgeably with callers about it, but has at least stopped bashing it.

So, guess which network has the guts to show MLS and recently ran an MLS-Euro '08 final game doubleheader on a Sunday afternoon?
