Why doesn't anyone try and place the ball on the volley? They always have to try and blast it and the ball is never on goal. :picard:

Well, glad to see Plata getting a start.

Yeah there are some bright spots but considering our opponent that needs to be tempered with a grain of salt.

Plata has been taking on defenders and causing havoc, Eck's been making nice runs and make a nice hustle play to win a ball back while up field. We're winning and we've had some chances but FCE look like a first year team, kinda like us but a bit worse.

Cristiano14
05-04-2011, 09:47 PM
Were playing out our system SOLELY based on winters Idealistic view, which lacks any sort of pragmatism and doesn't seem to match our team.

It may be a bit of a stretch to say this, but comparing this years team to Preki's there isn't that much difference in level of entertainment or attack if you look at the scoreboard this year. And at least last year we never conceded too many goals, at least not in the first 10 mins. (not that I liked preki at all, I hated him more than most)

Gwando
05-04-2011, 10:12 PM
Okay, couple of things here, first: yes, it is a bad start to the season, it was always going to be but, we were promised that this would only be the rebuilding stage...god! where have we heard that before? I though, think that Winter is doing a good job, there are plenty of positive signs, the stats wont support that yet but, a lot of good talent (MLS level, that is) and still no reason to discourage.
As per tonight's game: I don't know how many times the announcer said DeGuzman's name but, it couldn't have been many. I thought maybe they made a mistake and that he really wasn't in the line-up. As your over-paid DP, shouldnt he be mentioned a few more times than that...I am so unsure about his commitment!
Finally, Support the Canadian National Team this June 1st...it is a HUGE factor in our developement as a football nation, competative on the world stage. Many of you will not remember the Gold Cup miracle in...well, whatever year that was but, it was fantastic and we must support them as we support our TFC!

ManUtd4ever
05-04-2011, 10:14 PM
I'm happy with the win, but I disagree with Winter's starting lineup tonight given the 3-0 aggregate lead entering the match. As a result, arguably the 3 best players on the roster are now nursing injuries that could have been avoided. If Tchani, JDG, and Gordon are out for a significant period of time, TFC is in serious trouble.

Gwando
05-04-2011, 10:19 PM
One could read Winter's line-up as a show of nerves...I do not think that is the case. This team needs all the playing time it can get right now...first team play, so they get better at anticipating each other's movement and reactions. As I am sure everyone has noticed, there are so many bad passes and errant balls...this only gets better with first team experience, bonding and coach's guidance!

kaos197O
05-04-2011, 10:28 PM
No gate 3 post game party. Weird! NEE was mental for first half then dissappeared int the second. I think they jOined RPB as it wAs completely empty first half but rockin and full in the second. Considering the opposition and our starting 11 this was a very poor result. First 25 minutes you could see what Winter is trying to accomplish. After that we saW flashes but not much more. I can't imagine that Winter will be happy with tonight's performance. Edmonton is terrible.

Given the frequency of these issues between players and the team I think either we've got the largest collection of malcontents in world football or maybe (just maybe) there may be some issues with the way TFC has negotiated contracts / mo hangover.

For the games when it mattered in the v-cup preki put out strong teams, including frei. check the wikipedi page for the 2010 NCC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Canadian_Championship). he rested a lot of the first team players when strong early results gave him the cushion to do it.

his arabe unido selection was a complete fucking fuck up, but the v-cup he took seriously.

funny story ... i didn't get to watch this one. wednesdays are family dinner night (read: beer and wings, my family's classy like that) at the local sports bar. theory follows that if i'm at a sports bar, i should be able to watch sports, not just hockey (and also my family are pretty buddy-buddy with all the staff there, so i figured i'd get my way). alas, it was not to be so. i asked alex (bar manager) if he would change just one tv to soccer for me, but the tvs are hooked up in such a way that changing one would change half of the tvs. and in moose jaw, changing from playoff hockey (or riders football) is a major no-no. about half way through dinner, alex comes by and drapes something across my shoulders. the exchange went something like this:

sarah: 'wtf is this?'
alex: 'a new york red bulls scarf'
sarah: *jumps out of chair in panic and whips off scarf*
alex: 'sorry i couldn't change the channel for you, but you can have this, we got a whole case of em.'
sarah: 'uh why?'
alex: 'we're running this contest to see the red bulls play the iced caps.'
sarah: 'like tim hortons iced caps?'
alex: 'in vancouver. do you like the iced caps?'
sarah: *wearing tfc cap, tfc jersey, tfc hoodie, rpb scarf, rpb dogtags* 'uh not especially'
alex: 'i'll bring you a form to enter the contest!'

... i long to leave this place

TFC has played much worse than that, last week for example.

Wasn't great, some good attacks, we scored a goal. We won the game. Not sure what people are expecting anymore.

I've got going in another window. I was pulling for Montreal. Another trip to Vancouver will really be test of Winter's tactical depth. I like putting out a strong team tonight, I think it was the correct move from the prespective of the team's collective psychology.

HOW DID GERBA MISS?

Gerba was doing this weird thing with his feet all game, he never did it in Toronto . . . running.

The whitecaps/impact game was pretty good. Miles ahead of that knock about at BMO tonight.

At least we advanced which is what the goal was.......I guess.

I think that was the best game involving a Canadian MLS team I've seen in any league. Back and forth, wide open, both teams going for it. Vancouver has so many players who can get on the ball and cause problems, it means that they are never out of a game. The TFC game was terrible, and I'm confused why all of the good players were still on the field in the second half as it was clear Edmonton had not come to play.

Man, Gerba, the good and the bad. He is a handful. I think he sticks next year with the Impact. He's the Zach Randolph of Canadian footy.

Yeah, but on the flip side, he finished the game with the same characteristic aplomb that has made him a choice of MLS coaches everywhere.

Why the fuck would the players be fighting about the style? The coaching staff have chosen this style to play......and if the players can't play that style then guess what? Bye bye!

What's that old sports saying about it being easier to replace one coach instead of all the players?

Maybe the players who've been in this league for a few years actually know something about it and something about the other teams....

Maybe my standards have lowered but I didn't think it was a bad game. It was worth the price of admission just to watch Plata for 90 minutes.

I didn't think it was a bad game either. TFC thoroughly dominated possession (as they should against a USL side), and created several scoring chances, especially in the first half. My only complaint was the starting lineup for a match that was essentially meaningless. I appreciate that Winter is taking this tournament seriously, but at the very least, he should have taken the likes of JDG, Gordon, and Tchani out of the lineup earlier in the 2nd half before the injuries started to mount.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but I just hope that last night's roster decisions don't come back to haunt us against Houston on Saturday.

The best part of this result is that TFC fans were awarded with 2 additional games that will be broadcast on a network people widely get, in HD...

Parts of the first half were encouraging, it was nice to see us playing at a higher tempo. Plata has been the highlight of the season for me so far, he's already clearly a fan favourite.
Second half not so good very scrappy

Yesterday's game was basically a scrimmage I paid 70 dollars for. Pretty lame stuff.

Plata looked inspiring.

Gordon is one of the only players on this team that seems to actually give a shit about winning.

My theory on the uninspiring play of TFC so far this season...I think Winter has brainwashed these players into a pass first mentality, so they are always looking for an easy way to do that instead of making things happen forward. I've seen 100 more sideways and backwards passes than forward passes this season. Not productive at all. Sadly the only major movement forward has come from long balls switching the field to the winger or from Frei booting it into the other half.

TFC Advances To Voyageurs Cup Final

http://viewfromthesouthstands.com/2011/05/onto-the-final/

Toronto FC played close to a full starting XI against FC Edmonton Wednesday evening against what was essentially a reserve side. The Reds secured the win and advance 4-0 on aggregate to the finals against Vancouver later this month.
My usual post game video thoughts in which I discuss the risky/controversial choice to start close to his best team, I argue for time for Milos Kocic, I heap well deserved praise once again on Plata and Gordon, and I tale a brief look at the busy month ahead for Toronto FC.

Your comments are always welcome and appreciated.

Yeah, that was worse.

I'm sure there are other games people could cite that are worse than a 1-0 home win...

TFC has had a lot of awful games since 2007.

Not many players on our team have "been in this league for a few years". Their views on MLS are irrelevant.

Anyways..........I have been thinking of a possible line-up that we could have had up front with Winter's style that would have been very potent:

Dero

Martina Gordon/Santos Plata

Hopefully we can find a proper attacking mid-fielder soon.......

Due to work schedule, I can only catch the odd TFC game and last night was my first of the season and at the end the thought that went throught my head was that if I was Canadian (or particularly American) and this was my first "soccer" game, it would have confirmed all the negative stereotypes about it being a boring sport, where nothing happens for 95% of the time and players just pass the ball five yards over and over again and would probably have never shown up again.

There were some bright moments early on but for much of the rest of the game TFC played keep ball with no sense of adventure and seemingly few ideas of how to break down a rather ordinary FC Edmonton side. Granted, the tie was over as a contest after the first leg but surely it was a chance for the players to work hard on gelling under a new system. For example, at one point in the second half, Yourassowsky received the ball in acres of space about 35 yards from our goal and had the chance to break into midfield and possibly release Plata. Instead he passed back to Borman in the corner who came under pressure and just found touch, only to be berated by Yourassowsky!

The only times TFC really took on the Edmonton defence were though the runs of Plata and later Soolsma a couple of times and what's most frustrating is that each time they did, chances were created (although I'd like to see Plata take it to the corner the odd time rather than cutting in every time) . It felt like Winter wasn't getting the team to play the flowing, exciting Total Football he played in Holland, it was more like the careful, ball retention based, bore-your-opponents-into-submission style he would have been exposed to in Serie A. Again, I acknowledge that the tie was all but decided before kick-off so hopefully when I catch my second game tomorrow there will be more fire in the TFC bellies - otherwise, it could be a LOOONNNGG season...
