C.F. Monterrey v. RSL

It will be interesting to see if an MLS team can make it all the way through to the Club World Cup. That, if nothing else, will be an indication on how far the league has come in the last few years.

More on C.F. Monterrey:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.F._Monterrey

Salaries in Mexico are much higher than the MLS salary cap.

Go RSL!!

They're the class of the league, and if they win, they'll be the class of the region.

Best of luck!

I've actually watched every late stage CCL game that RSL has played. What a turning point for the league. It seems like this will be a huge let down for the league if RSL blows this opportunity. Not sure which team has the more pressure? Monteray as Mexican league champs should handily beat any MLS team. But RSL has the weight hopes of the entire league on their shoulders, not just their fans. Should be a great game.

History, in the making. I hope Will Johnson puts one in the net. Saw he was injured in the MLS/RSL wish them well / marketing video.

Its all about those away goals. Even if they lose, they must put one in the back of the net.

Love watching RSL play. There can be no better representative of MLS than they are right now; if any team can do this, they can.

I'm actually quite excited and looking forward to this match, it would be huge for MLS not just as a measuring stick, but it seems that others around the league including fans are taking notice of just how important this tournament is.

i'll watch this game as a neutral. Just want to see a good, well played two games in this final. But I ain't rooting for RSL. Just can't root on a league competitor. They'll have to do it without my support. LOL!

Oldtimer

^LOL. How will they manage? :) I'm neutral too, but I usually find myself rooting for the underdog in those situations. I just find it amazing that an MLS side could potentially make it to the WCC.

Another epic fail on Gol TV. No HD for TFC matches. NO CCL final. Clearly a bunch of numpties run that channel. If they didnt already have contracts for Bundesliga and La Liga before MLSE bought the channel they'd be showing replays of Dichios goal in the 22nd minute on repeat.

RSl were shaky at the start.. first 10-15 minutes but got comfortable as the half went along. They were like that at the start of the road Saprissa game too.

Nice half of soccer.

RSL has the goods to adapt to playing down there. You don't see their players leaving a leg in or getting caught out of position and taking stupid fouls. Incorporated a good mix of direct play and possession to slow the onslaught.

Great cross by will Johnson on the goal.

Just looked in to Suazo, apparently Monterrey want $25M for him now unless a preferred team pick him up lol.

As of the 20th of May, 2010, Suazo's card still belongs to Monterrey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.F._Monterrey) and its worth has been raised to $25 million, provided that Real Zaragoza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Zaragoza) does not make valid their option to buy his card at $14 million.

The yellow card shit is garbage. In every major tournament the yellow cards should be erased in the semis (or again in the finals in a case like this where its 2 legs). some of these players will never even come close to this opportunity again... why spoil it because of accumulating cards over 3-5 matches.

I admit I initially thought it was a red card live, but on the replay, at no point was there any real dangerous act there. He put his hands on the neck, which is rightfully a yellow, but didn't actually choke him, Saborio then went down trying to draw a red.

Can Monterrey handle the altitude?

I mean Monterrey is slightly elevated by not like Salt Lake City.

No way man. Guy had his hands around the guys neck. Straight red.
The reaction of the RSL player is of no relevance to the Monterrey player choking him.

Hands around neck does not equal choke. He never choked him.

Great result for RSL. The away goals will be huge but it'll be interesting how they respond without Beckerman.

Should be a classic next week. Here's hoping for history.

W/e. His hands were somewhere where they shouldn't be. He gripped his hand like a choke on his neck.

rsl still didn't win anything they can still lose next game so don't think they automatically won just yet.

If thats not even a card, Soborio acting like he just got hit by a sniper is certainly not a sending off.

ok .. who screwed around with this wiki ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%ADctor_Manuel_Vucetich

"He is most famous for using two substitutions in the 22nd minute against Real Salt Lake in the first leg of the 2011 CONCACAF Champions League final, allowing Real Salt Lake to earn the 2-2 draw with two precious away goals. Real Salt Lake would go on to take the championship. The substitutions were regarded by several association football outlets as one of the worst moves in managerial history. Sports Illustrated, in their April 25, 2011 issue, rated the substitutions as the 6th worst managerial error in association football history, and the 10th worst in sports history."

Just to note, it was 31 degrees in Monterrey towards the end of the game, felt like 37 with the humidex. No wonder RSL looked pretty gassed & confused for part of the 2nd half. Amazing getting the 2nd goal to tie it, with so few chances.

Altitude of Monterrey is around 540 m; Sandy, Utah is 1,356 m. I think RSL will be VERY happy to be coming back home with the score level, plus two away goals.

then again these guys are used to play in altitude

I got a soft spot in my heart for Will Johnson, and Morales.

Can't say I want to see williams winning anything though.

If you can provide another example, I will edit the picture for you  That was just the first that came to mind.

Wow...my respect level just went up a couple of notches for RSL. Real character to fight their way to a draw.

Absolutely agree. Regardless of the pressure placed on his throat that action warrants an exit. The ridiculous look of the flop is excused because it was the most innocuous action to take in response and get the attention of the official in a crowd.

But the fact there's a precedent to this is a "WTF?" Who would mimic such a harsh action and not expect recourse? Uberstupid.

I watched the last 35 minutes of the match. Passing was great from both sides. At that point it was Monterrey with most of the posession but RSL picked it up the last little bit. And I missed the goal that tied the game up... because I was texting.

Good result for RSL. It'll be hard for Monterrey to go into Rio Tinto and get a result in their favour. Of course anything can happen, but I have a pretty good feeling RSL have this one.

Should RSL win it, then when they come to play here in August, may I suggest a large banner congratulating them?

Well they didn't win unfortunately, but it would still be class to still make one congratulating them on how far they did get.
