interesting how close the bookies have it. RSL is the strongest MLS team right now, should be a good show.

I'm thinking 2-1 RSL.

hard to buy players with just allocation money. and SA clubs would only let their scrub players go on loan to MLS, because what benefit do they get from letting their good players go on loan to MLS?

jloome
04-05-2011, 11:03 PM
People mistake not signing these players for not wanting to.

On an international scouting basis, Saprissa is a well-known club, producing a fair chunk of Costa Rica's national team over the last two decades.

But these clubs want serious coin for these players. You might recall we were on the verge of signign a central american fullback a few years ago and Celtic scooped him basically at the last second, coughing up a million bucks for the privilege.

There's examples of good young latin players coming to MLS, like Montero and Saborio to name some.

^ Money is out there being spent though.

In our case we spent considerable amounts of cash on Pablo Vitti and to be frank if we had used it cost effectively we could have got a lot more player for the money.

There's not enough to spend it on every signing and it isn't endless, but it is possible.

There's examples of good young latin players coming to MLS, like Montero and Saborio to name some.
you know, I don't think anyone knows exactly how did Fredy Montero end up in MLS. IIRC something to do with some third ownership who basically sold Montero to the league?

Not sure why Saborio was let go by his former Swiss club?

There are exceptions to the rule...

I thought Montero was a loan deal, and from what Ive heard MLS only takes loan deals if there is an agreed price for the player before hand and the buying of the player is a garunteed option for MLS.

And he was bought. IIRC

hard to buy players with just allocation money. and SA clubs would only let their scrub players go on loan to MLS, because what benefit do they get from letting their good players go on loan to MLS?

how do the MLS rules work with purchasing an expensive player's contract? say if TFC wanted to purchase Drogba for example and the selling point was $10M, couldn't MLSE purchase out of their own funds?

SA scrub > MLS scrubs. Having a depth player might be worth it, I'm not fooling myself into thinking we're getting some Giovanni Dos Santos or Carlos Vela.

As I recall from past arguments on the board- MLS pays any transfer fees. But I'm sure their spending rules would be bendable if someone was trying to buy a Drogba.

unless rules got changed again, allocation money are to be used for transfer fee and anything excess of allocation money held is charged against salary cap.

generally agreed. though MLS had some bad SA players like Franco Nieto or Matias Mantilla. and you probably don't want to waste a int slot on a depth player

1-0 at halftime for Cruz Azul? I think that means that they're going through if things stay.

I seem to recall that the first leg was played in Monterrey, and Monterrey won that one 2-1.

Good football day today. I watched a Belgian Cup game, a UEFA CL game, this game, and I'm going to watch the Vancouver game next. Good day to have off.

Just a reminder, if we got points against Arabe Unido and RSL, this could've been our team.

Preki fucked that one up didn't he.
