No really good game stands out, except for Colorado at Dallas game on Fri. A repeat of last year's MLS Cup final. Misfiring Dallas is up against a Rapids team that has won all 3 of their games so far, but home advantage might count for something

Wed's match is pretty even but NE will be tired and shown to be wanting on the weekend v Salt Lake.

I predict LA to run all over DC

Houston v Vanny. Damn I think Vanny may hang in for at least a point. They may score for fun this week. Just a question how many they'll give up.

by the time LA gets to Toronto half their team may be suspended due to yellow card accumulations.

Saturday's NER-RSL game should be interesting. RSL will be coming of a CCL game in Costa Rica on Tuesday and NER will be playing mid week at VWC. Both teams should be tired after all that travel and fielding some depth players.

I don't get all the Vancouver hate, personally the only team I want to see do better than them is TFC. Next year I'll have 2 teams other than TFC to root for, unless they happen to be playing us of course. :D

Over/under on the year the first Canadian team wins the MLS cup? I'll say 2016. :drinking:

http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2011-04-06-vancouver-whitecaps-fc-vs-new-england-revolution

Despite that, Hassli's got a major attitude problem for taking his jersey off after a penalty kick, when he already has a yellow. Not the first stupid thing we've seen from him.

the red on Hassli and the NE red were warranted though.
Hassli elbows a guy in the face (Alston was truly hit hard) which is a yellow. Taking off yer shirt is a yellow. If Hassli didn't want a red he shouldn't have taken off the jersey.

Even MLS Matchcenter is calling Hassli's first yellow "questionable."

http://www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2011-04-06-vancouver-whitecaps-fc-vs-new-england-revolution

Despite that, Hassli's got a major attitude problem for taking his jersey off after a penalty kick, when he already has a yellow. Not the first stupid thing we've seen from him.

And yes Toledo is a goon.

Not a stupid thing. I think it was a gesture. You get a yellow for taking off your shirt. But he had the same shirt underneath it. I think he knew what he was doing, we'll know in the morning. I think he was playing up to the supporters, a chance to throw a game-worn jersey into the stands. IMO awesome move by Hassli, but wtf is the rule on that one.

Toledo's a complete idiot. He needs to go away.

Hassli's shirt toss was both incredible and pants-on-head retarded.

Even if there is some ambiguous language about the shirt take off thing, the rule will be interperted through its intent, and this loophole will be closed. This Hassli guy, much like Sean Avery, might have just gotten his own rule.

I couldnt believe the shirt toss though. I saw it as it happened but thought to myself, "Did he grab a towel and throw it? He couldnt have thrown his shirt?!"

In some ways, NER should be more upset about the refereeing. I didn't think it was either a penalty or red card against them.

BTW, this Whitecaps team has more talent and more heart than any edition of TFC so far. They were playing their fourth choice central back tonight, and he dribbled out of the back like Lucio! I've never seen a TFC center half do that. They also have four legitimate strikers, three of whom already have two goals! It's amazing how awful Mo was in retrospect.

I don't understand all the negative comparisons to TFC. With all due to respect to Vancouver and NE, they both liked like utter shite for vast stretches of the match. It was fun to watch because of the atmosphere and the shenanigans of Toledo. If anything, last night's display was further evidence that in MLS, there is a very fine line between most clubs in the league. Even though TFC is currently a work in progress, our club isn't as far off from being competitive as some have suggested.

Toledo is frustratingly inconsistent. Some matches he ignores everything that goes on, even obvious fouls, other matches he has a red card meltdown. The only consistency is that he is consistently terrible.

June 7, 2008 (Chicago vs DC) was his worst ever game for the cards. 3 reds, 7 yellows!

His record for Toronto matches: 27 yellows, 5 reds, 3 PKs in 10 games. Ridiculous!

* Winning their first game in the MLS 4-2.
* Coming back from a 3 goal deficit. (2 goals in injury time)
* Managing a tie in a game where they were 2 men down at one point. (almost won the game)
* Losing 1-0 away from home (a man down) to what seems to be a very good team this year.

Give me a break. TFC could only dream of pulling off shit like that. That's fine if you won't admit they are good, you still have to admit their miles ahead of TFC.

There are always the jealous ones who can't stand another expansion team do well. And the fact that some supporters congratulate them for it pisses these people off even more. The exact same conversations were going on with Seattle when they came into the league. It's no shocker it's the usual suspects with this attitude.

rocker
04-08-2011, 02:45 PM
They have had some dramatic games, that's for sure.

But I don't think going 3 goals down in the first place is a good thing. I don't think losing 2 points at the end of a game is a good thing (TFC fans know a lot about losing points in the final minutes).
Of course, both games were at home. Two ties at home isn't that great. Just this week we tied at home against Chivas and that concerned people greatly.

Just tempering the enthusiasm of Vancouver fans a bit.

The question is whether or not this is the best for Vancouver. All teams have good runs, good periods. The key to making the playoffs is consistency, avoiding injuries, making your home a fortress, and grabbing some points on the road.

It's not that I like the Whitecaps or even want them to do well necessarily. But every success they have, in my opinion, is a further indictment of our clueless FO (I'm not including Winter/Mariner in here, of course). If they make the playoffs before we do (which I'm almost tempted to say is a given) maybe we'll see a broom come along to sweep away the rest of the FO (Anselmi et al).

No, I don't like the Shitecaps, but based on what I've seen so far, their organization certainly knows what its doing. They won't still be floundering after their fifth year.

Two ties and a WIN at home.

If this was TFC, you'd be raving about how much heart this team has. If TFC ties their next game we'll have the same home record, and you'll rave about how we are undefeated at home. It's very easy to spin shit. All I know is I've seen them play and they play with alot of heart and they seem pretty well organized to me. Albeit they have their moments where they collapse as can be expected from any expansion team.

At the end of the day, for an expasion team, they've overachieved and had some magical moments.

rocker
04-08-2011, 03:10 PM
Actually, if TFC went down 3-0 and came back to tie, I don't think anyone would be talking about heart. They'd be saying "Damnit Aron Winter, why haven't you fixed the defense yet -- you had all pre-season to fix this?" or "Shit, I can't believe we let that bastard Bunbury score 2 goals on us" or whatever.

And if we tied a home game in the final minutes like Vancouver did against KC, you'd hear the complaints: "Damnit, this is like 2009 under Carver and Cummins, when we always lost games in the final 15 minutes! Will nothing change?"

My point is that perception makes people judge similar results in different ways.

Vancouver has no baggage. It's like when TFC tied the final game of 2007 thanks to Dichio's goal. It was a 2-2 tie. But then people swarmed the field like a championship.

Vancouver is in that headspace right now. but it's only 4 games. i';ve heard people talk about how awesome Hassli is and how he'll rip this league apart. I also remember back when people said Montero would score 20 goals in this league.

Things I admire about the Whitecaps:
- Off the ball movement
- Play balls into spaces vacated by defenders pressuring on the backs of mids
- Attack in numbers
- Have fluid build-up play which ultimately generates good scoring chances
- Solid veteran defenders who can make lengthy passes on the deck (eg. Rochat)
- Creativity in the side (Sanvezzo, Chiumiento)
- energy and urgency on the ball
- Have players who can bang in goals (Hassli, Harris)

Things I dislike about the Whitecaps:
- Prone to lapses in defensive marking
- Naive in many aspects
- Undisciplined play (from certain indivduals)
- High tempo game creates gaps for other teams to exploit
- mental weakness giving up late goals

I don't see what the problem is.

I watch their games and I am entertained, which is a lot more than I can say about TFC tbh.

Is that ok?

yup, and it's too bad we didn't have an established organization that could play a season in the USL in 2006 to try out players before deciding on signing them to MLS. We woulda figured out in 2006 that Reda, Braz etc were useless.

NY moves the ball around quite nice. At times they get to cute with it though and they just don't have that killer finishing touch today. Which is crazy considering the players they have on the field.

I still feel like they are going to break through though.

Would you want more or less?

I'd prefer about 90% empty in Harrison.

Unfortunately, if the big markets can't succeed in this league then we can forget about attracting top level talent. I don't want to go back to watching the Blizzard at Centenial Park with $3 entry fees. I want every team in this league to do their part in growing the league. TFC can only benefit from that.

Houston opens their new, DOWNTOWN soccer-specific stadium next season.

This league's biggest mistake so far has been locating so many of their SSS's in the middle of nowhere. Imagine the Fire playing on the banks of Lake Michigan right beside downtown Chicago? This league would have a COMPLETELY different feel to it if it had a visible presence in the hearts of the cities their clubs supposedly represent on the pitch.

Yep. Imagine BMO Field was put in Burlington, thats the kind of bullshit some teams have to put up with. I think having Houston directly downtown is going to do wonders for them.

you think you can just snap your fingers and get a stadium built in downtown Philly, Boston, New York, Chicago, etc? cmonson. It's not that fucking easy to get past the NIMBY's and grease enough palms for a league like MLS to make it happen. How many years has it been without the NFL in downtown LA now? ...... if they could put them downtown obviously they would.

The only obstacle is cost. They obviously couldn't/wouldn't accrue enough debt to plant their stadia in prime locations, but this has hurt them greatly. I'd bet the farm on every dollar saved by them cheaping out on stadium location costing them much more going forward, compounding with time passed.

Sometimes you have to spend a lot in the short term to benefit that much more in the long term. They cheaped out, and look how it's hurting clubs like Dallas, for instance.

Hopefully they've learnt their lesson and the next wave of stadiums won't have this problem.

To do it on an MLS budget it would have to be the lakeshore in Gary Indiana.

that's it. Houston wins 3-1. Vancouver looked beat down in this game from the travel/heat/schedule congestion/missing players.

But generally it was a shitty game... no intensity for the first 20 minutes or so for either team. Houston did pull away and dominated possession, but they had so many missed chances -- coulda scored 5-6 goals. Both teams couldn't pass worth a shit in the final 15 minutes. Vancouver really didn't have many chances -- Camilo potted their only real chance of the first half. vancouver desperately needed someone like Hassli -- big and strong.

Vancouver has now given up 10 goals in 5 games, which is strange considering in the preseason everyone was citing their defense as their strength and wondering where the goals would come from. Goals haven't been a problem.

that's actually pretty awesome lol. SKC front office challenged the supporters group to get ppl to go to their 1st game of the year at Chicago and actually bought the tickets for them (I don't think they covered transportation). They ended up with over 300 ppl going .... quite impressive considering how dead travelling support is in MLS and the distance they had to cover.

I guess they're really trying to build up heat with Chicago.

So happy today that the Shitecraps came crashing down to earth. Ultimately a 0-0 draw would have been best, but hey, a loss to Houston is still acceptable, even if it benefits an eastern conference opponent.
