I like Tchani's height, anyone know if he can cross a ball or pass it? Does he have any speed? Looks like he can head it, then again that goal was more on Hesmer failing than his header.

Anyone have a scouting report on these guys?

Isn't our lack of international spots going to be an issue with this deal?

Anyone who scores against the Crew is good in my books.

Also, worse goal celebration: Borman or Robinson?

I think Tchani would compliment JDG tremendously in the midfield

Well according to a NYRB fan on Big Soccer named BradDavis:

both have green cards so domestic players don't count as internationals.

Case closed.

Well, Here are some comments about Tony Tchani from the University of Virginia's men's soccer coach George Gelnovatch:

At 6-feet-4, 185 pounds, Tchani's size and aggressive style evoke the word "enforcer." But at 20, it's his extraordinary technical skills that will make him rich.

"He's huge," U.Va. coach George Gelnovatch said, "but he shields the ball with the quality of somebody who didn't grow up in this country."

"He was very different than anybody in college soccer," Gelnovatch said. "I think he's different than most guys in Major League Soccer. He looks like a high-level foreign guy. He's a playmaker. He sees things. He slips good passes to attackers."http://findarticles.com/p/news-articles/virginian-pilot-ledger-star-norfolk/mi_8014/is_20100114/mls-tony/ai_n47574283/

From Matthew Conroy of All Things Footy:

Tony Tchani, who began the season on the bench for the New York Red Bulls, has excelled in recent US Open Cup and league matches and is exceptionally adept at tackling, shielding the ball from defenders and providing dangerous passes from midfield.http://www.atfooty.com/2010/06/29/the-future-of-the-usmnt-may-be-african/

and from the MLS website:

Now entering his second season with the Red Bulls after being drafted second overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, the Cameroonian midfielder looks to build on a successful rookie season. In his debut year with the club, Tchani locked down a starting spot for much of the season. An athletic, box to box midfielder, Tchani’s aggressiveness and work rate have the Red Bulls organization excited about his potential.

Professional:
2010: Played in 27 matches, starting 17 and scoring a goal while adding three assists. Made MLS debut as a second half sub in 1-0 win over Chicago March 20. Made first MLS start in 4-0 loss to San Jose on May 8. Scored first career MLS goal vs. Columbus on May 20. Picked up first career assist on Rafa Márquez goal at Toronto on Aug. 21. Assisted on Tim Ream’s game-winning goal on Sept. 11 vs. Colorado. Assisted on Joel Lindpere’s goal on Oct. 21 versus New England.

Collegiate/Club:
Helped the University of Virgina win the NCAA Tournament. Spent two seasons in Virginia, recording eight goals and four assists in 2009. Was a First Team All-America selection by the NSCAA and College Soccer News. Earned spots on the ACC All-Tournament Team, NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team and All-ACC Second Team. Semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy. Earned 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year Award after notching nine goals and three assists.

Personal:
Born in Douala, Cameroon, Tchani moved to the United States as a teenager. His favorite movie is Gladiator. Listens to rap music – favorite artist is Lil Wayne. His best soccer memory was when Virginia faced Akron for the NCAA Championship. Favorite TV show is Rob and Big. Son of Marceline Gargom.

I'm glad you started this thread.

It's always been a pet peeve of mine that people judge trades without even knowing anything about the players coming in.

"This is a bad trade even though I know nothing about the players we got! arghhhH!H!"

TYVM BayernTFC.

I love this deal. DeRo didn't really fit our new system, is older, had personal issues with the team. We fill holes in our line up with players that seem to fit our style of play.

Only think I'd like to know more about is:

The Post has confirmed not only won't De Rosario count as an international because he holds a green card, but he won't count as a Designated Player either because Toronto is picking up a "significant" chuck of his salary.

I hope we see these guys on the field tomorrow. I'm REALLY looking forward to the rest of this season!

Ignoring the totality of the deal that brought him here (and all that other crap) I think he deserves his own thread. Especially, since a lot of people will probably be unfamiliar with his game.

We are getting a very good player here. Like Mo Edu, but he can actually move the ball around. Also reminds me a lot of lass diarra and he's the perfect player in the midfield of a 4-3-3

He's going to be have to be amazing for a lot of people to warm up to him, and he better do that from the first game he plays for TFC.

Because he'll always be compared to that guy we traded DeRo for, and there is that high expectation (that I think is unrealistic)

I think getting a player at this age and of this calibre is, at least financially, a massive gain for MLSE.

His skill set would fit really well in the 443, as he's very much a two-way player, good both muscling people off the ball and a very good passer. Decent dribbler, decent shot.

Although our system requires more general and tactical mobility than he would be accustomed to in New York, it's also designed to move the team's shape forward in a manner that makes a lot of the decisions for the players.

I think you have to compare more than just him for DeRo, you have Danleigh, him and the First Rounder, plust the fact that we have more cash to spend elsewhere, about 250k more I think

Edu was sold by TFC/MLS. not like he had much of a choice in his employment

He's young, strong, talented and exciting AND he's a GA player, so that means his salary doesn't affected our cap!!!!!

I know people miss DeRO, but the totality of the deal is easily in our favour. Folks with the cap space we have now, we can easily get a QUALITY striker and have a much more complete team. just wait till it's JDG and Tchani in the middle. that's a SOLID midfield folks!!!

Sold? He asked to be released, made it clear he wanted out long before it happened, it was planned by his agent, and Mo relented. I never feel comfortable with these gen A players, they frequently leave MLS after a few years of pro soccer in N America....trading for a gen x player is risky: if he is a bum, it was a waste, if he is any good, he is a two year project.

I love this deal and think it was incredibly well thought out by winter, i hope we can replace the Goal output however with our new cap space....Omar Cummings anyone? haha wishful thinking! :)

I can't comment on the official details of Edu's departure, but most could see that from Day 1 he wasn't particularly fond of working and living here in Toronto.

Gotta think we'd be exceptionally lucky to keep him for more than two more seasons. We're introducing a system that's predicated on positional understanding; while the jury may be out on whether that will work in MLS, it most definitely WILL prepare young players more ideally for playing in Europe.

I'm excited to have Tchani here, looks like alot of potential in a combo with JDG.

The SPL isn't the strongest league in the world these days, yes, I know, but we aren't actually criticizing Maurice Edu for accepting or courting a move from MLS to a club in the Champions League (for, realistically, quite possibly literally ten times the salary), are we? That's just being petty, surely. A rational mind can't possibly blame Edu for leaving. The club was appropriately paid, Edu now (at least occasionally) starts for the American national team, has played in the world's strongest club competition, won trophies in Scotland, and made in all likelihood millions of dollars. These are opportunities largely not afforded to players in our league. It's not like he went to some provincial European second division club. If Tchani moves on to play in Europe that means he's done well for Toronto FC on the pitch, and his move will have brought attention to the club off the pitch. We should be grateful for that. Also, if he does it whilst under this or a future contract then the club will be compensated.
