With DeRo likely on the move to NY, who should take the captain's armband?

I would have said Cann, but his little stunt at the beginning of the year was DeRo-esque. I agree with Frei.

I don't think there's anyone on this roster that can replace DeRo's influence, you don't just give out the armband to Frei because he's a good keeper.
The only player that has been here since the beginning? Attakora?
Definitely not Cann, De Guman maybe once he starts playing

It isn't just because he's a good keeper. He's vocal, keeps the back line in order...he just exudes leader.

Frei is the best player left, but does he deserve the armband? He's a bit young.

I would give it to JDG. He's proven to be professional and he was the assistant captain last year once in awhile, if I'm not mistaken.

DeGuzman is an interesting choice and i am torn.

On one hand he has done nothing to deserve such a position, but on the other hand it may be a good move with some upside. Bing what should be the team's best player should put him in the running. Also it could be something that will help get the most out of him. Not that any professional should need extra motivation, but this could be representative of a fresh start, a new chapter in his life/career.

Frei will likely be sold to a club in Europe in a few years. So in the short term, he will make a good captain. In the name of building a long-term system, and re-building the team, JDG or perhaps Cann are the more appropriate choices for captain. I do not see them moving back overseas (JDG) or to a higher level league (Cann) and they should both end their careers with TFC.

I don't think our club deserves to have a captain.

Apparently everyone thinks we're so shit that they will only play for us if they get paid insane amounts of money . . . why not just go put the captain's armband around one of the corner flags and let it fall down to the grass and be smushed into the mud whenever someone goes over to take a corner kick.

for those saying JDG, why on earth would you award him or anyone really with with the added prestige/responsibility of captaincy and then cross your fingers and hope that he steps up as opposed to someone that already has? if TFD HAD to pick one right now i'd say Frei but ideally i think it'd be better to have no one for now and wait till later in the season and after some of the dust settles

I think they have rotate the armband game to game for awhile. Dero wasn't a great choice for captain (not knocking his play or his character in saying that). Nobody in the squad seems like a true leader. I don't think Cann or Attakora are options as both have unsettled contract situations. JDG is not a natural leader and is only an option if he regains his form of 2007-2008.

Perhaps the captain is yet to be signed

The issue seems to be that Frei has the qualities for the captain but the position of keeper makes it difficult to communicate to him and relay it into the team.

As well, it means the keeper would need to be all over the pitch to talk with the ref and whatnot.

Watch the confrence on TFC TV, its funny really. He says Frei is captain but Santos is captain. LOL

There you have it. I think Phil had it right. Frei ought to be the captain but his position is taking away practicality to perform captain duties.

"I think that when you’re on the pitch, it’s better that a player who’s captain is in the midfield, who can reach back and front. I’m sitting on the bench and when I want to reach my players, it’s very difficult when they aren’t near to me. I think when you’re like Stefan (a goalkeeper) and you’re behind and you have to coach the players in front, I think the distance is too far ... Maicon is the captain." - Toronto FC head coach Aron Winter (http://torontofc.neulion.com/tfc/console.jsp?catid=2&id=2927).

JDG is the last person we should have as captain. Especially when I'm hearing people justifying it because of his pay check. Really, who cares how much he makes. JDG's personality and play on the field just isn't what you would want your captain to be. I've read him say in his own words that he doesn't like being captain. The last thing JDG needs this year is more pressure, everyone knows already that if he doesn't perform he'll be this year's bitch.

I think eventually we may see Tony Tchani emerge as captain, but that's just a guess. For now, Frei is probably the best player we can slot into that role. It doesn't matter his age. He's quite vocal, his saves can certaintly turn a game around and inspire players to play harder. Something just tells me this kid has it. Nana is also a future consideration, but he's not ready quite yet. Remember we are a very young team, so having a young captain isn't the worst thing in the world.

Dion Phaneuf... Shit wrong forum :p, but yea I say Attakora, 1) He's Canadian, Canuck pride!, 2) He's young which means we have a solid captian for a while 3) if either frei or nana go to europe Frei will most likely go first. Cann's a no no withhis contract bull.

Choices
1st - Attakora
2nd - Frei
3rd - De Guzman
4th - Gargan

The locker room leader should be the captain. Who do the players respect? Nothing else should really matter.

The problem, I think, is that there is no stand-out locker room general!

I presume Maicon must be a leader in the room, or they picked him for no real reason.

Personally, I'd just rotate it amonst the senior-most players on the team (for that is worth on this team!), and then give it to whoever embraces the responsibility the most.

ATTAKORA!, thats who i see taking it next year, we have a new mentality around the organization ... YOUTH and at 22 with MLS regular experience i think Nana could be a great captain for this club to grow with, with all the youth coming through, and Tchani coming over the older guys are going to be rare i think and having the armband bounced around like our coaches will ruin what it means,
