For all the talk of Toronto FC showing their fans their much talked about possession oriented 4-3-3 formation for the first time at home Aron Winter sprung a surprise lining his side up in a 4-2-3-1 shape.

This article gives a good glimpse into Winter's tactical acumen.

So MLS is having a summer tournament that will feature * Euro clubs- MAN U, MAN City, Real Madrid, Juventus etc... and since all these clubs will be over here they are expected to play MLS sides as well.

Is this the first year we haven't had a friendly included in our SSH pack? It is right?

I have a ticket that says TBD.

I'm hoping that ain't a friendly.

In de Dutch soccer philosophy 4-3-3 is almost the same as 4-2-3-1. In fact, the Dutch MNT plays the latter formation consistently since the team asked then coach Marco van Basten to switch to the formation prior to the Euro Champs of 2008. It has proven to be very deadly and effective and it's very easy to switch between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 during the game...

I wonder if the club (and I am just completely guessing) could have issued that and will activate the barcode on it if we make NCC Final - or if we have a friendly against a small club...???

The MLS All-Star game is hardly Manchester United's only stop on its summer tour of the United States.

The Red Devils will also be facing three MLS teams (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/manchester-united-fc-barcelona-headline-world-football-challenge) in addition to squaring off with FC Barcelona as part of the World Football Challenge (http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2011/03/top-clubs-lining-up-for-world-football-challenge.html) this July.

The Premier League leaders' first stop is Gillette Stadium, for a WFC match against the New England Revolution on July 13. They'll then head to Qwest Field on July 20 for a non-affiliated friendly against the Seattle Sounders followed by a trip to Soldier Field on July 23 for another WFC tilt with the Chicago Fire.

Their stadium seats 46,000, so the cost is spread out. Still, it's a nice perk.

Yeah, that's what I was refering too. Great perk, you couldn't ask for a better match (depending on the players scheduled to play)

I wonder if they have to pay extra for their US open games....

cause that would piss me off if I were them.

Comparing our STP to other teams is worse than apples to oranges...

It happens in every sport...

Compare the Montreal Canadiens to the Carolina Hurricanes! In Carolina you get 20-games for free - you ain't getting that in Montreal...

Compare Toronto Maple Leaf packages to Nashville Predators - you're not getting 4-hotdogs and 2-pops free every game in Toronto...

Toronto Blue Jays to New York Yankees... etc etc etc...

Every market is different... Every STP will be different...

What one city gives away for free - another city will charge for...

Its like complaining about death and taxes - they're both gonna happen...

Carts...

Good article indeed.

Aside from martina's second goal which was a full on long ball (but not longball, way too deliberate and accurate for that) all our goals have been from quick direct, but very controlled moves, really shows the benefit of the emphasis on passing and moving that i imagine training is now full of.

We're still not good enough to be able to use patient possession play to consistently break down a well organised team that's had time to get it's formation set, that's going to take a long time, but we look like becoming a very dangerous counter attacking team.

I prefer our first goal against Portland to the second, there were so many good things about it. calm finish, great movement and unselfish play form dero, good pass from santos, and the controlled calm way that peterson held off a couple of midfielders and eventually managed to get a simple pass off to santos at the start of the move was great as well.

Here's hoping the U-20's improve a LOT in the next 2 games....saw highlights of the first half and they could have been down 5-0 if not for some pathetic finishing by Guadalupe....they'll get pounded by a good team if they don't smarten up....

On top of that, it's not really free. Any ticket that they give you was already included in the cost of the STP or they expect to recoup the costs elsewhere. You could then argue that the cost of the individual tickets is really less, which may be the case, but they are in different markets. Apples to oranges...

Didn't see this posted anyhere...
Omphroy getting serious coverage in the NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/29/sports/soccer/29goal.html?_r=2&ref=soccer

Although I think they got this fact wrong:

Toronto F.C. drafted Omphroy, a 21-year-old defender, in the second round of this year’s draft, the 26th pick over all, not knowing of his condition.

Wasn't it common knowledge to everyone that he had MS?

Regardless, I really hope Omphroy works out for us and sticks with this organization for a while. Really nice kid.

^Yes we knew about his MS. They are prolly mistaking it to last years heart condition of Zachary Herold.

I think they are playing the Man U - Barca match at Fedex Field so capacity would be around 90,000 but I take your point.

at the very end of Winter's scrum he mentions the new defender hasn't arrived yet - so i wonder if it is someone completely new.....and not gomez or hunter....

he says, "another defender is coming probably but we're waiting for him"
