View Full Version : Canadian Sports Journalists have lost their way, when it comes to Football

I apologize in advance for this rant but I am effen outraged by the articles I’m reading this AM.

Has any sports journalist assigned to cover yesterday’s game not reviewed the game and not seen how shit poor the officiating was yesterday? If Carver thought that the Canadian media would write/speak to the mistakes made by the officials – he was w r o n g. Our lame ass Canadian “soccer” reporters were too busy narrating the game to even notice? Where is the journalism?

As an example - the National (disgrace) Post chooses to mock the TFC fans rather than speak to the outrageous calls made on the pitch. WTF?

We don’t need a game summary report with a few team player narrative snippets - any orangutan can do that. Journalists should be insightful. Expose, uncover tell me something interesting. Idiots.

I concure ... I had to watch the game on CBC since my flight arrived at 3:30pm and made it home just on time to watch 80 mins of the game. I think the CBC OK in trying to cover the officiating (De Vos on the other hand - not so much), but at least the CBC tried to find out about the meeting amongst the officials at half time and commented on the Caps coach and Coach Carver exchanding "words" about the officiating and the need for a police escort for the refs.

QFT Hal.

QFFT!

Can we do anything? Where has Ben Knight been lately? Can we get Stephen Brunt's number? What about Morgan Campbell? Is it me or has TFC news gone rather thin lately?

My story on the match will be up on the Globe site shortly, Roogsy.

Refs included -- but it may not be quite what you expect.

Judas! :D

Not sure exactly what you mean by that, but when he said "might not be what you expected" I immediately thought of when Judas Von Guzman made his "decision" and journalists were defending him. Guess they have to go against the grain to get people to read it...

these CBC commentators always side with the refs....at least Craig Forrest has the balls to say that a call was BS.

Jason DeVos's agreement with the PK call? He made enemies with his biggest audience.

He said something stupid like "As a defender I wish they would call that more often"...really? THIS was the great occasion to take a stand for this call? It never gets called but HERE it is? Drove me nuts. And even worse..."as a defender"? You'd figure that as a defender you'd actually HATE that call, not be in favour of it.

Just a headshaker all around.

his rationale was pathetic...because it happens all the time??! It has been going on forever...it's something that happens. You can't really control it....it just happens.

I'm convinced that he called it just to make the touney more interesting....

DeVos is highly biased towards Montreal. It had been clear from watching the coverage he had provided thus far (have not yet subjected myself to watching the replay of yesterday's game yet) that he is nothing short of a homer for the Impact and probably the USL in general.

A player that played for the Impact for 3 years being biased towards the Impact? Say it ain't so!

He is the Glenn Healy of Canadian Soccer, watch any Leafs or Rangers game with Healy as colour commentator.

^^ ok, whatever. I might not agree with it being called against us and us only, but the point DeVos was trying to make with that comment is that as a defender, he knows better than most how often forwards are interfered with without it being called. That's just honesty. He works for a national broadcaster and is supposed to be non-biased, and he generally is, because he calls them as he sees them. I don't necessarily agree with how he calls it, but I respect him for it.

The piece explains that I happened to be cought out of position on the calls, and the people I spoke to were adamant -- both ways!!

Good one Ben.
And I was glad to read the comment from a Vancouver fan that said he took some "good natured" abuse in the stands but that the TFC fans impressed him.
