Yes, very interesting. I think he used the term "One of the best players in the modern football era". Then went on to give the hint about it being a player from the EPL. Sounds like it *would* have been epic. Ah, well... back to wondering who is going to score goals.

I know it wasn't Mariner but we've heard these lines before from TFC and they've turned into ho-hum signings. Not the least of which was Mista, touted for his "Liga" credentials, they blissfully ignored his impact was 5 years removed.

Now, now. Let's all use logic in these wild speculations.

They have indicated a desire to have a striker as a DP so which EPL team has an abundance of strikers, one of whom may not be happy and his team may be looking to sell?

Torres leaves Liverpool goes to Chelsea. Chelsea star player sees reduced minutes and rumoured to be sulking.

Natural the player that almost signed with Toronto FC was Didier Drogba.

There, isn't using logic much better? ;)

Personally, I'd rather the club just shut up about shit like this as opposed to touting about a deal that never happened. I didn't give Mo credit for almost signing Nuno Gomez, or Joao Pinto, or whatever other DP he had almost signed. So I sure as heck ain't going to give Mariner any credit for almost signing a modern era EPL player. This piece of news bugs me because it brings back way too many bad memories of Mo talking smack.

I don't think Mariner was looking for any "credit" nor was bragging or anything like that. He just mentioned in matter of factly and said it didn't happen. He also only mentioned the EPL when Jeff Blair hounded him to give a little info about 3 times.

Interesting quote, talking about the system:

"The way that Dutch football is played, you keep possession of the ball in the middle third and the defensive third ... It looks like you're going nowhere, it's very similar to a high-end Champions League game in the old days, where you just keep possession of the ball and at the right moment, you hit them on the break and you put the knife in. Because you take the legs away from the opponent and then maybe in the 50, 60, 70th minute, that's when you get the action and the goals."

Just to clarify and cut the confusion:

the big name was from the EPL and that fell through.

he then mentioned probably someone else in the next day or two. He did not say from where, he did not say they were from the EPL, he did not say they were a big name.

My sense is this goal-scorer (if it's not in fact Zavarise he was referring to) will be someone of MLS pedigree. Would be awesome if Houston was crazy enough to part with Brian Ching. Or maybe someone like Saborio. Or Wondolowski.

More likely, since we have future consideration from LA for Barrett, we'll get one of their second-stringers, like an Adam Cristman or Bryan Jordan or something.
